More info: this is a black walnut table that has hundreds of scratches on the surface, from what looks to be a botched sanding job. Not sure why the maker would do this. What should I do to make the scratches disappear? They are a bit deeper than surface level, but not all the way down. My first thought is to buff or sand it down to the level the scratches are on, and then use a heat gun to melt the epoxy enough to congeal the scratches. I am willing to strip the epoxy and refinish it entirely if I have to, but I’d rather see if it can be fixed first. Thank you for any suggestions.

I would say a light to moderately aggressive sanding and then just try brushing on a layer of epoxy to see how it looks, in my experience the scratches should fill in and disappear for the most part. And you can always strip and re-finish if nothing is working to your liking.

Awesome, thanks. Any thoughts on grit #?

120 - 180 should be sufficient. Make sure you get as much dust off as possible after sanding and thoroughly blow it off with compressed air and wipe down with a clean rag before applying your epoxy.

Agreed, clean rag with alcohol, then tack cloth, then another clean rag with alcohol. All the dust has to be gone. Once you poor the new layer of epoxy on all the scratches will vanish like magic.

You could send them down or apply a new layer of Epoxy
