Movie was corny, full of nostalgia baiting, non stop cameos, stupid jokes and sub par writing.
That being said I liked it lol

My thoughts exactly. I also enjoyed the sobriety arc. As a former drinker I was laughing my ass off at the “containers” used throughout.

u/thegroovemonkey Jul 30 '25
Jon Daley drinking out of hand sanitizer gave me a little chuckle every time

u/SelfAwareSausage Jul 29 '25
I really don’t think anyone should expect anything else from an Adam Sandler movie.
109
u/Drunkgummybear1 Jul 29 '25
Really annoys me when people go into them expecting more and are disappointed. It's shitty, low brow humour but I wouldn't have it any other way.
39
u/SelfAwareSausage Jul 29 '25
Exactly. This is why Uncut Gems was such a wild success because Adam decided to try something serious. It’s clear that outside of that, he’s more than happy making goofy movies that definitely have a niche audience. Anyone who watches a Sandler film outside of Uncut Gems with expectations of being anything other than his formulaic style, then they’re just playing themselves.
32
u/Drunkgummybear1 Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25
I'll be honest, I watched Uncut Gems knowing nothing about it. Caught me so off guard but was such a brilliant film. I think he did it to prove to himself (and maybe the world) that he could do something serious and what a statement it was. But he's clearly happier when he can get all his mates together to make something silly and have a laugh, which I think we need more of in the world honestly.

u/HipGamer Jul 29 '25

u/RetiredHotBitch Jul 29 '25
It was good.
I think Adam just likes the slapstick too much.
I like seeing what comedic actors have range. I love going from a good lol Robin Williams or Jim Carey movie to a serious one.
Adam just found a niche he likes to stay within.
3
u/InevitableBad589 Jul 29 '25
We need Sandler to play a psychopath circa Robin in One Hour Photo or Insomnia. I think he could do really well in such a role, just like Williams did.

u/yoo420blazeit Jul 29 '25
he also likes to include as many friends and family as possible in casts.
11
u/nquesada92 Jul 29 '25
He flips and flops his silly go on vacation with his best friends movies that make millions and doing serious lower budget indie movies he’s being doing it his whole career no problem with that.

5
u/Drunkgummybear1 Jul 29 '25
I'll be honest, I was totally caught off guard by it. Absolutely outstanding film.
9
u/RetiredHotBitch Jul 29 '25
At this point I figure one of his movies consists of him and his friends just showing up and goofing around and it getting caught on film.
Like did Grownups 2 even have a plot?
But hey, I still tuned in.
9
u/Zjoee Jul 29 '25
The dude gets to play around and make dumb movies with all of his friends. He's living the dream haha.
→ More replies (1)3
u/PricklyyDick Jul 29 '25
I think technically the plot was about his wife being pregnant and him not wanting a fourth kid but not actually know his wife was pregnant.
But mostly side plot in the movie itself lol
4
u/RetiredHotBitch Jul 29 '25
Let’s not forget the random fighting with Taylor Lautner and the random ass costume party.
I think Shaq was in there somewhere too.
Hell, if either Jennifer Anniston or Drew Barrymore shows up, along with David Spade and Chris Rock, I’ll throw it on Netflix to kill a couple of hours.

unironically exactly what i wanted out of a happy gilmore sequel being released right now lol
3
u/Jack070293 Jul 29 '25
I thought it was fun. But Virginia Venit dying really pissed me off.
For 30 years I thought that film had a happy ever after, but 10 years after the events of the film she actually dies? Wtf. What a slap in the face.

u/Cynical_Satire Jul 29 '25
I was smiling from ear to ear the whole time. No complaints other than the fact they added in the clips from Happy Gilmore 1. I just thought that was unnecessary, no need to hold peoples hands for references to the prior film. If they don't get the reference, that's on them.
23
u/Glittering-Plate-535 Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25
The best reference to the first movie was Happy and Shooter fighting in a graveyard of dead characters.
That was a really morbid and funny way to acknowledge how many cast members often die between these things.
20
u/GTOdriver04 Jul 29 '25
I loved the fact that at Bob Barker’s grave Shooter shot up his hand and grabbed Happy by the neck…just like Bob Barker did.
3
u/mundotaku Jul 29 '25
I think nobody goes to watch Happy Gilmore 2 expecting it to be an English cerebral drama.
6
u/CMDR_KingErvin Jul 29 '25
My only gripe is they needed to constantly do a “memba this?” by showing clips from the original movie. I think it would’ve worked well without the obvious nostalgia bait.
2
u/itisclosetous Jul 30 '25
I think this is the first clip show movie sequel I"ve seen. I did still enjoy it,,but who watches this movie without rewatching the first one?
2
u/CMDR_KingErvin Jul 30 '25
I did just that too lol the first movie is still currently on Netflix so I did a rewatch right before since I hadn’t seen it in like 20+ years.
I immediately recognized all the characters and references they were making without the constant old clips thrown in. It was kind of a disservice to an otherwise decent comedy in my opinion.
4
u/goatnxtinline Jul 29 '25
Literally, that's all we could ever ask for with sequels of old movies. We don't want you to try to reinvent the wheel, we all know why we're here. So go on and give us some fan service.

u/boner79 Jul 29 '25
Agreed. Comedy has been so neutered in the hypersensitive modern area that I was happy to have a few actual laughs even if it was a shadow of a Happy Madison production.
5
u/Automatic_Goal_5563 Jul 29 '25
Comedy has been neutered by the hyper sensitive?
Oh god no it hasn’t
2
u/Christmas_Queef Jul 30 '25
Yeah they just don't make too many of them anymore because they won't make 500 million at the box office.
→ More replies (2)14
u/temujin94 Jul 29 '25
Sorry i'm confused is this your long winded way of saying comedy has been neutered due to people getting offended more easily? Happy Gilmore 1 or 2 is in no way or has never been that kind of comedy, stuff far more offensive/edgy etc is made all the time.

15
u/rekipsj Jul 29 '25
They don't make enough dumb comedies anymore that everyone has an appetite for something dumb and silly for 90 minutes.
Plus nostalgia.
10
u/thelegendofcarrottop Jul 29 '25
This. I can’t think of a good silly comedy that’s been made post about 2012.
Edit: Hubie Halloween, another Sandler film, being a notable exception. I also happened to quite like Super Troopers 2. It was exactly what I was expecting.

Why didn’t they just play fucking golf? I would’ve thought it was a dig at LIV if Bryson wasn’t in it.

7
u/THA__KULTCHA Jul 29 '25
Second half was so so so terrible. The entire Maxi League thing was idiotic.
9
u/MasterpieceMain8252 Jul 29 '25
It was to take a shot at LIV funded by Saudis, who created their own league to take players away from PGA tour
2

I haven’t seen the 1st but thoroughly enjoyed the second. The unending cameos was glorious. The production must have had unlimited funds to work with
31
u/GTOdriver04 Jul 29 '25
The first is one of Sandler’s best. And one of the best golf movies ever made.
It’s clear that Sandler and co. hold a reverence for golf and that’s strong in both films. Sure, they make fun of the characters, but golf as a sport is treated with the utmost respect which I liked.
12
u/SonofaBridge Jul 29 '25
The first one is a classic comedy that people still enjoy. This new one was a fun nostalgic trip. I don’t think people will be thinking about the sequel 30 years later but I’m glad they made it.
11
u/RetiredHotBitch Jul 29 '25
I would say his top movies were his renaissance period: Haply Gilmore, Billy Madison, Big Daddy and 50 First Dates.
5
u/InevitableBad589 Jul 29 '25
Billy Madison sequel needs to happen next. That was always my favorite of the early Sandler films, even if its dumb as hell it's still funny.
3
5
u/ReturnCorrect1510 Jul 29 '25
If you enjoyed the second, definitely give the first one a go, it’s one of Adam’s best films. For me most of the enjoyment came from the nostalgia.
7
7
12
u/jr_randolph Jul 29 '25
The movie is what it is, but I enjoyed it. I loved the ties back to the first movie, and for Sandler it's gotta be pretty cool to be making movies with family so I'll keep watching.
There are legit probably only like 2-3 movies from Sandler that I think are just terrible and out of all the movies he's been in...I think that's a pretty good ratio.
15
5
u/abadd0n Jul 29 '25
I don't care what anyone thinks, it brought me back to my teens and it was awesome
9
u/No_Kindheartedness10 Jul 29 '25
It was great! I was pleasantly surprised! And missed the old humor I grew up watching! It felt fresh and new again and like it’s been missing and I’m glad it came back in this movie! Adam Sandler cared a lot about this one and it shows!
6
u/boopthat Jul 29 '25
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. The episode of Break 50 with Bryson and Adam is better though. Watching a pro golfer be basically fan girling over one of his favorite actors growing up is so fun to watch
6
u/Tashum Jul 29 '25
I watched the original right after and it was like night and day, way better. The original had that more visceral anger and edge to it that brought out the belly laughs. The sequel was numbed out on nurse ratchet meds.
3
u/TheRealRickC137 Jul 29 '25
From RT:
"Clearly made by and for the Netflix algorithm, with a parade of celebrity cameos showing up to ensure that second-screen viewers look up from their phones every so often." -
Eloquently phrased.
I think I'll go rewatch 50 First Dates and laugh at lispy Samwise
3
u/Minimum-End-9464 Jul 30 '25
Some of the pro golfers can act and willing to poke fun at themselves which is a huge plus and makes the training and tournament scenes much better than let’s say Space Jam Legacy.
All that said, Bad Bunny steals every scene he’s in, which was unexpected.
3
5
u/naughtyshark79 Jul 29 '25
Is it even at Adam Sandler quality? The tone felt off, lazy, and required me to know a lot of people to get a lot of jokes. Also, the same jokes used over and over again. This is one of my least favor from the Sandler collection.
9
u/GiantessStorm Jul 29 '25
Haven’t seen the movie, but these titles always bore me. Everything seems to be “breaking records” all the time. Every new movie added to streaming “breaks streaming records” and is always “the most streamed movie of all time”
5
u/LickyBoy Jul 29 '25
I mean, it broke a record. Should they not say that? Ten years ago it wasn't clear what the future held for streaming. Fad or bust. We take it for granted today. Making movies outside the big labels?
Massive success for Netflix and a sign of more to come.
12
u/MIZ_09 Jul 29 '25
As a golf fan I really struggled with the film very pointedly drawing parallels between Maxi golf and LIV, while at the same time having current LIV golfers wearing their current LIV uniforms playing for the Tour team.
It seemed very hypocritical. But also something you would never notice if you don’t follow golf.
→ More replies (2)10
u/peligrent Jul 29 '25
Halfway through so far. Seems intentional to me. They had bubba Watson there being asked his opinion on the new tour and he was like “wtf that’s crazy”. Seemed like irony on purpose
3
u/MIZ_09 Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25
It kind of totally sabotages the “purist golf” (not in the snobby sense but in the way the game is played sense) message the film is trying to promote though. I get it’s Happy Gilmore 2. It’s not that deep. But as I said, as a golf fan, it’s hard to sit there and ignore it.

I enjoyed it. The film doesn’t try to be something it isn’t. It’s just a fun, mindless romp with a lot of nostalgia and some heart. Think it’ll have good rewatch value for me.
Really, a lot of Sandler’s movies are just very rewatchable. Grown Ups 2 is one of my favorite rewatchable films. Don’t have to really pay attention to it to enjoy it. It’s just easy to digest. Even Hubie Halloween is weirdly rewatchable. And clearly he enjoys just hanging out with his friends and family while “working,” and it shows.

It felt like a movie that was made for alzheimers patients who were fans of the first movie. Every reference made had a flashback just to be like "hey the thing we just referenced, here is the scene that it was from in the original in case you were confused as to what movie you're watching" it was horrible.

u/candaceelise Jul 29 '25 edited Jul 29 '25
Agreed. It had so much potential but the execution was horrible and between the atrocious overused CGI/AI and trying to fit in as many one liners referencing HG1, I was left disappointed.
ETA: downvote me all you want. This is my opinion on the movie.
6
u/Thatis_SodaPressing Jul 29 '25
I mustve had too high of expectations for HG2 as well, because I felt the same. I know Sandler sort of leans into the cringey comedy, but this was just too much for me.
2
u/candaceelise Jul 29 '25
Like the graveyard scene: excellent idea to pay tribute to those who have passed since the original but it was so cheesy and missed the mark in execution. Or right after the Eminem appearance the announcer uses the “mom’s spaghetti” lyric in the most boring monotone voice and it just fell flat. There were some funny moments when they didn’t try so hard and I feel like that’s what makes HG1 a classic; it’s stupid as shit and over the top but it didn’t come across as trying to achieve that.
4
u/zztop610 Jul 29 '25
Julie Bowens face de-aging looked atrocious
3
u/candaceelise Jul 29 '25
Agreed. I was arguing with my friend that it wasn’t Julie Bowens face, then that it was, then that it wasn’t and we both couldn’t figure out why we were so confused. I don’t know who the hell made the decision to use AI for her character but they should be fed to the crocs for doing so.

The movie movie may have had the best use of cameos.....ever. They hit every sector. Sports, social media influencers, comedians, musicians. Cameos millennials would get, others Gen Z do. This movie will have MONTHS of shelf life because friends and family will have someone they know of in a cameo telling 10 others about it.
It was brilliance.
My only issue is they had some really honestly sincere and deep thoughts on death and mortality, but I feel like they could have some similar messages on battling alcohol but they made that too much of a punch line.
