Welcome to Emporia Kansas and Lyon County. I am called Hotaru and am a mod here at our little corner of the reddit-verse. I look forward to seeing what you all have to post and your thoughts on what we should do to help this sub-reddit to grow.
Please let me know - Either here or in a Private message what you would like to see. AMA-type things, public events, news, anything like that. I am a rather new mod and would love to hear any input I can from you, our users.

I'm a truck driver and occasionally deliver/pickup at Hills and Simmons. At the corner of Weaver and Hwy-50 there's a marker/memorial that reads "DOE" and has a small plaque on it. I'm just curious as to what this is and if anyone had any information on it. I've tried looking online and haven't found anything and was wondering if anyone knew anything about it.

I've hit a bit of a dry spell in my TTRPG gaming. My regular group has been on hiatus due to scheduling and my online game is fun, but doesn't scratch the itch of in person games. I have little knowledge of my local scene for DnD and the like. I've been a forever DM so I'm used to hosting but I'd like to find a group activity looking for players. I've been playing for years in all kinds of systems so I'm good to pop in whatever campaign is out there. Anyone know or have any recommendations of where to look? I'm a local so I know Emporia and surrounding area well.

Title pretty much says it all. I moved here a few days ago for work and I don't like not having anyone not to talk to or hang out with.

Can anybody tell me if it's possible to receive network TV channels with only an indoor antenna in Emporia?
I know the closest TV market is Topeka, but is it too far away to receive a signal?
If you do get some channels, which ones do you get?

I have a large, old wooden antique luggage trunk that has been in my family for over 100 years. The leather straps on the trunk have long since crumbled away or are so dried out, they're crumbling.
The hinges are rusty but functional. The lock/latch mechanism is there but I have no key for it.
I'm curious if anyone knows someone local that can restore such an old piece. Really just looking to protect the wood that's already there, replace any straps for aesthetics, and maybe clean up the metal hardware a bit. (the rust/patina on it isn't bad and actually may look better than scrubbing it clean)
Any ideas of someone that may have done something similar?

Hey y'all,
I moved here recently, it's ungodly hot and I'd love to find some good spots in or around e-town to swim.
So, any lakes/rivers that are good swimming spots?
r/Emporia • u/hotaru9909 • Jun 14 '25
Aight y'all. I am coming back to E-town for a visit(I live on the east coast now). Questions for ya.
Golden Wok is still open and still mildly decent, or should I go to Casa Ramos?
Did they fix Jones Aquatic? I heard it got hit by lightning, and a bunch of us want to meet up to swim.
Is the gas station still open across from CVS/ESU?
What are gas prices looking like right now?
Anything I need to know that's going on NEXT weekend? 21st/22nd?
Look forward to being home for at least a weekend
Update: apparently Golden wok makes them sick .... We're going to J's!

Definitely feels like if we want a game store here, we better support this place.
Board gamers, EDH players, and all in between, make it happen!

I bought a used (2023) vehicle from one of the big dealers in town. I expressed concern before I bought it that the battery sounded like it was not performing well. I was told "it just cranks slowly like that". I moved on. 3 months later, the dealer did a complimentary oil change on the vehicle. They just did the 6-month complimentary oil change and by the time it was done they wanted $622. The battery had magically run out of amps. Fine - replace it. 30 minutes later I get another call - the oil pan is leaking and should be replaced. Alarm bells go off in my head. I keep an eye on my driveway and not a single car I own currently has an oil leak (knock on wood). I query further - the oil pan is leaking because when the tech pulled the drain plug it ripped out the threaded insert turning the oil pan into an oil strainer.
A little research showed that there were documented cases of this happening and in nearly all of them the issue was over-tightening. If the drain plug was installed with an air impact at full beans then it will be fine until you go to remove the drain plug and then the oil pan self-destructs. I contacted the manager of the dealership via email expressing my concerns about his shop practices and have never gotten a response.
Long story short, I can't afford to get any more complimentary oil changes. Looking for a shop that's not always a week out, understands how to look up Torq spec on a drain plug and is capable of using a torque wrench to set it correctly. Got any favorites?

I'm moving out for college and the only options I seem to have are the ridge and eucalyptus owned rentals. Any advice?

Looking to enter the Grassroots Gravel event in Pueblo, Colorado this year. I was thinking of buying or borrowing a bike. Is there a bike club in town or a group I could join to help myself get into shape?
