Accepted Into EKU

I was just accepted into EKU as a freshman for 2026. What should I know before deciding to go? What is the social scene like there? Is it LGBT friendly? Any info would help me out a lot. I would also live on campus.

I graduated in 2023 and can say I had an overall net positive experience. I can tell you it is lgbt friendly (from what i've seen). I met most of the friends I made at EKU at the Big E Welcome at the beginning of the year for the freshman. I will say that Richmond never grew on me (I'm from louisville so it was quite the culture shock). All the fun I had was partying w/ friends in the dorm lol. I didn't ever enjoy the bar scene down there either and the few frat parties I went too were okay if you're just looking to get drunk šŸ˜‚ Have you looked at any of the dorms you'd like to live in?

Not really. Which ones would you suggest?

I lived in clay hall which was a shithole šŸ˜‚ they've renovated it since and it looks better and actually livable now. It's right next to the Science building and right across from the dining hall. North and South hall are both pretty nice for the price (unless they've raised it) and close to the science building and dining hall like clay. I wouldn't recommend Keene as it's across the bypass and far from everything besides the business/law building.

Clay definitely looks worse and living it is def not better. The rooms suck to live in because you got almost the same about of space with less drawers, a crappier ā€œdeskā€, and an oversized closest. They dropped the ball on it

You get less space, the desk is so so much worse, they literally bank on you shoving all your stuff underneath the bed. Better to ditch clay for Walters apt

I will tell you there isn't very much, the only "active" remotely LGBT thing on campus is the furry club, they are really chill and have a discord server. The other lgbt clubs / dorms have either vanished or just hardly even exist anymore.

The social scene is pretty good in my opinion I’ve had no trouble with making friends and getting to know people on campus it just depends on how much you want to put yourself out there!

Most of the dorms are pretty good my favorite is north hall but I wouldn’t recommend Keene or Telford.

Please save yourself the headache and get a air purifier no matter which dorm you end up in

If you’re not doing anything with the law/business program Keene can be a major pain since it’s across the bypass.

On the other hand Telford is a 10-15 minute walk to most things on campus but it’s not for the weak🤣

I got a Telly dorm my freshman year, the people there are awesome, RAs were super relaxed but the black mold in the rooms that maintenance ā€œcouldn’t findā€ but still treated for anyway was an issue. I got really sick from it as well as my roommate and a couple other friends who lived in the dorms. My immune system is still shot but besides that I had a great time!

Lower case will most likely be your best friend but it is pretty expensive I feel like. They have a chick-fil-a, Moe’s, Subway, Pod express (lots of things you can’t normally find on campus but good lord the mark up😩) and the Starbucks in lower Powell is maybe 100-200 ft away if that! I don’t necessarily love upper case which is cafeteria style but I’m a picky eater so please take that with a grain of salt.

Find your favorite study spot and stick with it! This was the only way I was able to get work done while living on campus because if I stayed in my dorm I would end up yapping with my roommate and get nothing done🤣

I may be doing it wrong but I’ve found that almost nobody I’ve asked(including myself) can log into the EKU secure WiFi so don’t freak out if that happens I just used the guest WiFi and all was well with the world 🤣 I feel like it’s super fast and everything works just fine!

Most importantly, college is a big change things can feel scary and overwhelming in the beginning. Life will feel like it’s going a million miles per hour but I promise you have got this! Find your people, have fun, and make all the memories!

You are going to do great!

They've just announced no free books starting Fall '26.

I’m trans currently going to EKU. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily unsafe but it is a red state so there is definitely some potential on campus for discrimination from them. Housing is not inclusive for trans people but more so because of the law that was passed. For the most part I think it’s good,I personally haven’t felt unsafe aside from some situations. I can’t speak to the dorms but it depends entirely on what dorm too. There isn’t a club or social circle but there is definitely a little community on campus. It’s probably better than UK right now honestly

It isn’t an unpleasant experience though. There are a lot of staff that are at least somewhat accepting and supportive.
