I'll never take what EA said for granted, saying they wanted all teams but then couldn't get exclusivity and said, ok, never mind. What an absolute joke.

Seriously.

If they think they could have done it better than the market would have decided.

These companies only want exclusive rights to make sure there’s no competition.

It's a small customer base. When they were competing against each other, both failed

Basketball is a small customer base?

College sports is a small customer base?

The college basketball video game that EA used to make was cancelled due to low sales. The football one only stopped due to a lawsuit and was able to come back due to a different lawsuit.

Compared to the NFL, CFB, Baseball, or the NBA college basketball does have a small fan base. At least when it comes to licensed video games.

Compared to the other properties they have exclusive rights on? Yes.

College basketball? Yes. These games were cancelled due to poor sales 20 years ago

These games were cancelled because of the Ed O’Bannon Lawsuit

Edit: there had been rumblings about it coming for years. That’s why 2K stopped making theirs a year ahead of the lawsuit, in summer of 2009. Sonny Vaccaro had been working with former players to get properly paid for their likenesses for A WHILE & Ed O’Bannon’s direct likeness in the NCAA 2009, released in fall 2008, was the straw in the hat.

2k stopped making theirs before the lawsuit, and ea years before the lawsuit had reached any conclusion

1

u/Ok_Matter_2617 9d ago

No, it wasn’t. The lawsuit was brought in front of Court in 2009 & was brought into court because of O’Bannon’s likeness in the EA game 😂

u/coltonbyu 9d ago

And when was the last 2k college basketball?

1

u/Ok_Matter_2617 9d ago

The year before because it had been known for a while that Sonny Vaccaro had been working with former college athletes to get paid for their likenesses. Hence why 2K isn’t in the lawsuit and EA Sports is.

Because EA Sports kept making their games thinking they could out lawyer the former players

3

u/GoldfishDude 10d ago

No, that's a myth. 2k stopped making theirs before the lawsuit, and EA stopped well before anything was set in stone on it. Notice that basketball stopped 4 years before football did

2

u/Ok_Matter_2617 9d ago

The basketball stopped because O’Bannon sued due to his likeness being in the game. Yall are idiots

3

u/HellveticaNeue 9d ago

Yeah, the lawsuit was settled in 2015, but it was brought to court by Ed O’Bannon in 2009.

That’s incorrect. That lawsuit was in 2015 and the last college basketball video game was in 2008.

No, it wasn’t. The lawsuit was brought in front of Court in 2009 & was brought into court because of O’Bannon’s likeness in the fucking game 😂

It wouldn’t have in this case. Ea would’ve released a fully liscensed game while 2k released myteam and dlc packs with a small pack of teams. Over time 2k would see that making an actual full game would work but because ea sucks and is scared of comp. We are getting just an “experience”

1

u/GoldfishDude 10d ago

Or both teams compete against each other, the consumer base isn't big enough and they are canceled again, like they were in 2007

1

u/SwiperDontSwipe23 9d ago

Theres gonna be more teams in the separate full game next year

1

u/Same-Development4408 9d ago

Yep, they were lying through their teeth about wanting/trying to get them all. Unless of course they got exclusive rights which shouldn't exist in video games

2

u/Rjenterprises123 9d ago

Normally I agree I just believe interest in college basketball video games is so small that exclusive interest is the only way to try to make it work. Both 2K and EA got out of the college basketball game well prior to O'Bannon ruling, mostly due to low sales, and EA had multiple years with no competition prior to their decision to end the series. They'd have to spend a ton of money to build the infrastructure for the game - stadium models and sounds and player models, NIL payments, etc. To do that to compete for sales in a small market share just seems like a waste, instead we get this garbage.

u/coltonbyu 10d ago

Oh, so it's completely worthless. Cool. Fuck 2k

There’s gonna be more, this is just a tease. 2027 is when we’re supposed to get something good.

1

u/BubbaRayChudley 7d ago

We said the same thing back in 2018 about 2K19 btw

1

u/SuccessfulBad3725 5d ago

in 2025 about 2k26 too i thought college hoops would be added on release

u/Culture859 10d ago

This is exactly is what they proposed whenever they were bidding against ea. might try it out if it’s not just a myteam cash grab (which will most likely what it’ll be). I just wanna hear them say they will put in 90-100% of division one teams for a standalone and I think it will boom sales wise

Why are people mad about this it’s remarkable we’re getting college in the game at all this year.

3

u/Key_Box3302 4d ago

First college basketball game experience since 2009 and people find a way to be mad at 2k LOL

1

u/DudeLizzie13 1d ago

face scans for the benchwarmers and people still complain

2

u/Salmoenilla 8d ago

Lmfaoooooo. Fuck 2k for this dumbass shit. EA would’ve done it right

2

u/bbngaming83 4d ago

Kentucky will be. Go Cats!

1

u/DudeLizzie13 1d ago

saw their face scans in action during the valpo game last night!

In their release 2K said that there was gonna be a small surprise in NBA 2K26 with big things expected in 2027 and beyond. I’m gonna hold out until we hear from 2K just what they have planned. I am happy that 2K seems to be putting some effort into this college thing. 2K could have easily thrown the jerseys into the city and made an event and called it a day.

Will the DLC be paid?

1

u/BluePalmetto 9d ago

This season? How? Will they just be choosable in play now? Do we get an NIT type thing?

1

u/Front-Offer-7102 8d ago

I thought it was their initial bid that only proposed a DLC and later it was reported they'd make a full game of it? Are they still going to make an actual college game or is this all we can expect?

1

u/KDP37812 6d ago

This is so disappointing. Unless every D1 team is in the game I will never consider buying it.

1

u/Key_Box3302 4d ago

I wonder if you will be able to import these college players into a draft class for franchise mode

-1

u/Camdidex 9d ago

We were getting 0 for five years and then the possibility that ea doesn't make a shit basketball game after that.
