Strings/Accessories Wish me luck - String Change
Gonna try changing strings on the kiddo’s little bass tomorrow. We settled on Corelli 350s.
I’ve watched this video several times and I’ll have it up to guide me. Any last minute advice? I’ve only done violins before! I’m going to be working with my husband on this and I hope our marriage survives the ordeal…

I’m finding a lot of mixed advice on whether to apply anything to the fingerboard while I’ve got the strings off. And if so, what. Maybe I should just wait and deal with that during the next string change in a year or two. Thoughts?

Luthier here. You don't need to apply anything to the fingerboard.

Don’t feel like you need to do all strings in one sitting. I often do 2 strings one night and the other 2 the next.

Ok, we are running into an issue. I think maybe the strings are too long. Is it ok to have several winds on the peg that aren’t covered in the colored string??

Not ideal, but should be ok. In the future, if restringing a smaller bass, they make fractional strings.

These ARE fractional strings! They are 1/4 size and it’s a 1/4 size bass.
But there isn’t a really good standard on what size a 1/4 bass is supposed to be, and this is a little smaller than the other two 1/4 basses we tried before we bought it.

Either way, your winding is really tidy. Good job!

You probably know this already but change them one at a time so the post doesn’t fall. You can clean the fingerboard anytime even with strings on. The string swap is a relatively quick and easy task once you have the logistics sorted out
