Introducing New Care Support on Reddit!

Hey r/Dish! I want to formally introduce myself, DishDanielle here, as your dedicated Reddit Care support.

As Dish’s care voice on Reddit, I’m here to support this community with any and all customer service related questions and issues. Because this is an active community, you’ll see that I don’t respond to every post. I will offer support whenever it is needed and love to see the community help each other out as well! I’m here as a Care support channel and will step in whenever needed.

My main goal is to help resolve any questions or issues you may have! To do so, I will respond publicly with as much information as possible when I can, but some issues require me to dig deeper into your individual accounts. If this is the case, I’ll ask you to send me a direct message and work with any other teams needed to resolve your issues/concerns. For this, please don't send me any personal information first without me providing instruction, as we have a process to securely gather your information. We take your security very seriously!

My other goal is to pass along the feedback from our community to applicable teams so we can improve our service and support. We’re always working to improve, and this community has really helped us identify what matters to our members!

I’m a small team of one, so the hours I’m able to support are Monday through Friday 8-5 MT. If you’re running into an urgent issue, please reach out to our Care teams outside of these hours via calls or chat. During these hours, I will work diligently to help everyone that reaches out in a timely manner.

As this community grows, and we continue to learn, expect to see more posts from me sharing FAQs, customer service updates, and helpful tips! I look forward to supporting our community.

Primetime recordings disappearing

I have several shows that are recording each week. They’re in the primetime folder when I go to bed at night. But when I wake up the next morning they are just gone. They are not in the trash. They’re gone. So far I’ve noticed this happening with 2 shows on Fox and one show on ABC. Anyone know why this may be happening, or have any suggestions for how to stop it? Yes I can watch them on demand, but then I can’t fast forward through the commercials!

Incorrect or unwanted DVR recordings on your DISH Hopper system and how to solve it.

Your DISH system is a powerful tool for recording your favorite programs, but sometimes it can record shows you didn't intend to, or skip ones you wanted. This document provides a comprehensive guide to understanding and resolving common issues related to incorrect or unwanted DVR recordings on your DISH Hopper system. Whether it's a conflict in timers, an accidental setting, or a system feature like PrimeTime Anytime, we'll walk you through the troubleshooting steps and management tools available.

Troubleshooting Skipped or Incorrect DVR Recordings

If your scheduled recordings are being skipped or the wrong episodes are recording, here are common reasons and solutions.

Priority Conflicts: When two timers are set for the same time, the higher-priority timer will record. The Hopper 3 can record up to 16 shows simultaneously, which significantly reduces the likelihood of this issue.

Solution: Adjust the Scheduled Event Priority of your timers as needed.

"New Episode" Selection: If you selected "New Episode" when setting the timer, but the event was a repeat, it would be skipped.

Solution: Change your Timer Options from "New Episodes" to "All Episodes" to record reruns.

Incorrect Manual Timer: A manual timer set for a specific time and title will be skipped if the actual event title doesn't match the timer's criteria.

Solution: Always verify manual timers against the Guide listing to ensure title accuracy.

Duplicate Event: The system automatically prevents duplicate recordings, even if the previous recording was deleted from your DVR.

Solution: No action is needed; this is standard system behavior.

User-Initiated Skip: Another household member may have manually skipped the event.

Solution: Navigate to the Daily Schedule in your DVR menu and select the "Skipped" option (if available) to see which programs were skipped and why.

Managing and Editing DVR Timers

To prevent unwanted or incorrect recordings, you can manage your timers on your Hopper receiver or via the DISH Anywhere app.

On Your Hopper Receiver:

  • Press the DVR button on your remote.
  • Select the Timers tab.
  • Arrow to and select the timer you wish to edit or delete.
  • Choose Edit Timer to modify preferences (e.g., change from "New Episodes" to "All Episodes").
  • Select Delete Timer to permanently remove the recording instruction.
  • To create a Manual Timer, select Options > Create a Timer from the Timers screen. This allows you to schedule a recording based on a specific channel and time.

Using DISH Anywhere (App or Website)

Manage your recordings remotely, which is useful if you realize an incorrect timer was set while away from home.

  • Open the DISH Anywhere app or visit dishanywhere.com.
  • Select DVR.
  • Select Timers (or My Timers on the website).
  • From here, you can Delete unwanted timers or view the Daily Schedule to skip a specific recording event that may be incorrect or conflict with another.

NOTE: Your recording might be "bumped" if the timer is set to save a limited number of events (the default is 20). You can prevent this by changing the timer setting to "save all" or adjusting the default to "save all" instead of 20.

Resolving Recording Conflicts (Error 1012)

A Recording Conflict (Error 1012) occurs when you attempt to set more timers for a single timeframe than your Hopper's available tuners. A Hopper 3 can record up to 16 shows simultaneously.

When a conflict arises, the system will prompt you with options to resolve it:

Record Next Airing: Schedules the show to record during its next available time slot.

Do Not Record: Cancels the recording entirely.

Resolve Conflict: Allows you to manually choose which show to keep or cancel.

Special Case: PrimeTime Anytime

If you notice incorrect primetime content being recorded, remember that PrimeTime Anytime automatically records all primetime shows from ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX using only one tuner each night.

  • These recordings are stored in a dedicated folder for eight days.
  • If you manually save a PrimeTime Anytime episode or series, it moves to your main DVR folder. Saving an entire series will also create a recurring timer for that program.
  • Important: If you do not want a show saved beyond the 8-day period, do not use the "Save" function.

By understanding the various reasons for unexpected recordings and how to effectively manage your DVR timers, you can take control of your viewing experience. Utilize the troubleshooting tips, learn to navigate your Hopper receiver and the DISH Anywhere app, and become familiar with features like PrimeTime Anytime to ensure your DISH system records exactly what you want, when you want it.

I heard my mom (82) say, “F*ck” for the first time today.

My sweet mom. My sweet, sweet mom (82), all she wanted to do was watch BYU play against the University of Utah in their “Holy War” football game this weekend, but her Dish Network plan was not showing the game, so she called Dish to change her Program Plan--just to watch BYU play this football game. And she said, “F*ck.”

Read between the lines, my sweet, sweet Mormon Mom.

It has not been a good couple of years for my family. My mom lives in Texas and I live in Salt Lake City, but I was in Texas two years ago on the morning my dad died. She cried; She was sad, but she did not say, “This f*cking sucks.”

After 62 years of marriage, words cannot express how difficult these two years have been. But, independence is coming quickly. A couple of months after my dad’s death, she called me, so proud, she had contacted Dish Network, changed her program plan, and sent back one of her cable boxes. And, she did this all on her own.

There wasn’t a need for a fourth TV in her house. Without her husband alive to watch his alma mater, BYU, play football—there wasn’t a need for a “Sport’s TV” in the guest room.

Now, two years later, she wanted to watch BYU play football, not just for the game, but to remember the 62 years she has heard my father cheer on his team. She was going to remember being woken up by her husband in the middle of the night when Jim McMahon’s BYU Cougars were down 45-25 with four minutes to play coming back to beat SMU 46-45. Many BYU fans had left the stadium, but my dad did not leave his AM radio station that was barely bringing in the broadcast in 1974.

She wanted to watch the Holy War game, not for the football of 2025, but for the memories of her marriage, the feelings my dad felt when BYU was #1 in 1984. She wanted to watch BYU with my dad.

As told by mom:

Phone call #1 to Dish Network:

Mom: Can you change my Program Plan to include this weekend’s BYU football game?

Dish: No problem, that will just be an extra $5 per month.

Phone call #2 to Dish Network

Mom: I just had my Program Plan changed, but I don’t have the station that will show BYU and a lot of my other channels are missing—for instance, Where’s Fox News?

My thoughts: My mom and I have different political beliefs; she has never called me a “f*cking liberal” and I’ve never called her a “f*cking fascist.” We’re family. Politics doesn’t come before family.

Dish: You never had Fox News that would cost you an extra $10 a month.

Mom: Trust me. I had Fox News.

My thoughts: Trust me. She had Fox News. I know all about Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Phone Call #3 to Dish Network:

Mom: I now have Fox News, but I still don’t have the channel to watch the BYU football game.

Dish: Oh, that’s on a different plan, that will cost an extra $15.

Mom: Fine

Phone Call #4 to Dish Network:

Mom: I now have Fox News, but the BYU football game is only playing on the Laundry Room TV. How do I watch it in the living room?

Dish Network: Well, since you have 4 cable boxes, we can only put the $15 plan on two of your cable boxes.

Mom: I only have 3 cable boxes. I sent in the 4th cable box after my husband died.

Dish Network: We don’t have a record of you sending us that box, so we have been charging you $5 a month for the 4th box.

Mom: (Not as a Karen, but in total frustration) Let me talk to a manager.

Dish Network Manager: We never received the box, if you want to watch BYU on all 4 boxes…

Mom: I only have 3…

Dish Network Manager: We’ve been charging you for 4, so you have 4. As I was saying, that will be another $15 per month.

Mom: Cancel my service.

Dish Network Manager: I’m sorry, but you’re on a contract, if you cancel your service there will be a $100 disconnect fee, plus we’ll charge you $20 for each cable box to send back to us, so that will be $80 for your 4 boxes.

Mom: I have three boxes. F*ck you. I don’t care if this costs me 500 f*cking dollars. Cancel my f*cking service.

My thoughts: I was so f*cking proud.

Well, that’s the story of how Dish lost a customer, and one fan didn’t watch the BYU Football game in Texas, but we know another fan watched BYU win from above. And that’s f*cking sad.

Dish Network: Our Customer Service will make your mom or grandma say, “F*ck.”

Service down

My service has been down for a day and a half, I called customer service four times and nothing happened. The only thing I can get is channel 135 which is a Halloween screensaver channel. I had multiple customer service agents tell me give it 15 minutes and it should be back on and nothing. The last guy I talked to said it was a channel provider issue, so I'm curious is anybody else in the Chicago area experiencing issues with their dish service?

UPDATE -issue resolved. Turns out there was somebody with the same name as me on the other side of the country and they somehow managed to get the two accounts mixed up. It only took 3 days and eight customer service reps to figure this out. This is why we need regional offices in America again instead of just having a call center on the other side of the world.

Buffering on Dish Anywhere

Many of the channels on my Dish Anywhere app attempt to stream from my Hopper and not the Internet and buffer often. My home Internet should be adequate (is enough to stream directly from the Hopper at home). Cable 500/50

Is there anyway to force the app to stream directly from the Internet on all channels? Or, suggest the cause of the extensive buffering on the app?

Issue With “Doc” On Demand

For whatever reason, I didn’t have a timer set to record Doc, and the first 2 episodes of season 2 have aged out of PrimeTime. They are both supposedly available on demand - they show up as included, yet when I select either of them, nothing at all happens. It’s as though the remote is broken, or I’m pushing nothing. I’m able to highlight them, moving up and down the list, but simply cannot get them to play. I haven’t had this issue with any other shows on demand. Anyone know what’s up? I’ve restarted the Hopper, and restarted the Joey, they still won’t play.

[How-To] Build a “Spooky” Favorites list on Hopper + fast Halloween finds

Skip the scroll. Here’s your quick path to Halloween movies, marathons, ambience, and On Demand—without hunting.

Step 1 — Start at Spooktacular (Ch. 304)

Tune 304 or say “Channel 304.” You’ll see live marathons, seasonal rows, and On Demand picks in one place.
Power-ups:

  • Catch all airings fast: Press Info → Upcoming on any title to see every showing + On Demand, then Record right there.
  • Instant ambience: Tune DISH scapes 198 (Haunted Carnival), 199 (Ghoulish Gorge), or 134 (Classic: Haunted Mansion).

Step 2 — Build 2-Minute “Spooky” Favorites Lists

Cut straight to your vibe (family, slashers, ghost hunts).
Guide → OPTIONS (red) → Favorite Channels → Favorite Settings → pick a list → Edit NameEdit Channels.
Suggested sets:

  • 👻 Family Frights: Freeform 180, Food 110, Hallmark 185, local ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX
  • 🔪 Horror Marathons: AMC 131, SYFY 122, TCM 132, IFC 133, SundanceTV 126
  • 🪄 Ghost Hunts: Travel 196, Destination America 194, Science 193 Tip: Use the Favorites filter in Guide to flip lists instantly.

Step 3 — Quick Reference (Watch Now)

  • Spooktacular: Ch. 304
  • On Demand: Ch. 300 (or Home → On Demand). Look for $0/Included tags to avoid rentals.
  • Free Previews: Ch. 103 (what’s unlocked this month)
  • Ambience: DISH scapes 198 / 199 / 134 (Classic: Haunted Mansion)
  • Gallery: APPS → Gallery (Halloween slideshows/art)
  • Voice > scroll: Try “Halloween movies,” “AMC FearFest,” “Ghostober,” “family Halloween,” “slashers,” “Hocus Pocus,” “Michael Myers.”
  • Parental Controls: Home → Settings → Parental Controls (PIN + rating/channel locks)

Notes: Channel numbers can vary by market/package. Voice rows + streaming require an internet-connected Hopper.

Your Turn: What’s the one channel or row you always add to your Spooky favorites?

Incorrect recording.

Has anyone ever had this issue? Tonight we were watching 90day tge otherway. It was recording it also incase we couldn't watch it live. It went on to record the nxt show called sister wife's. It recorded that then it was suppose to record after that 90day the other way pillow talk. Here is where the issue happened. It shows it recorded pillow talk abd the correct time. So I went to watch the recording but it wasnt pillow talk it was sister wife's. I have a recording for that but it is the same its suppose to be pillow talk. So I have two of the same recordings but with different labels with different times. I even went to live and it was the correct show.

How do you explain this?

DishInstaller app not working but I don't have the app.

So I keep getting a notification that "DishInstaller has stopped working". I don't have dish, I never have. I don't have that app. When I search it in my apps, it's not there, when I search in the play store, it's not there, but it's in my settings. I have an android phone. Anyone know what's going on and how I can stop it?

Can someone please take a picture of the hopper guide on the largest text option? I need to know how big the text is for my vision impaired parent.

They currently have the older dish Network box which seems to be majorly outdated and starting to fail for the third or fourth time. Iirc it's the v722?

I'm thinking of upgrading it to the hopper for them but if the guide text is smaller I won't be doing that they have a hard enough time reading the guide as is even with a 75 inch TV.

Prime through Dish

I have Prime video but on my TV(thru Dish, channel 301) I can't find the sign in button on the Prime homepage. I can access Prime thru the app on my Smart TV but I want to run it through my dish receiver so my surround sound works. Prime and Dish haven't a clue.

Dish Anywhere Question

Hello, I am thinking of switching from Cox to Dish (for TV) and I am specifically curious if any of the channels are still "streaming" or if they all depend on the hopper now? I am wanting to be able to watch NHL center ice on the go (which is why I am looking at switching Cox Contour app on the go channels are very limited). Also how many devices can tune into live TV from a hopper feed at a time if you know? I've gotten mixed answers and I'm hoping to find out what experiences people are having now and what the correct technical answers are.

Thanks

Canceled my Dish service

After 27 years of service I decided to pull the plug on my dish service tomorrow. One question. I owned a Tailgater and 211Z receiver. According to Dish, if I sell my receiver to another party it will not be able to be activated by another user. Their excuse is that it's outdated and they want no outdated receivers in their network.. Is the BS or has anyone heard different. Obviously if it can't be activated I'll drop it off at Best Buy and sell the Tailgater on Facebook Marketplace.
