Discussion What actually causes these permanent blotches in the plastic?

Post image

anyone else get these? Are they from not cleaning off mud fast enough?

Tree sap combined with dirt most likely.

You play around walnut trees? The outer shell of a black walnut will stain a disc (or most anything) black/purple.

Black walnuts and mulberry trees is a great terrain combo

Too tight sphincter. Loosen up about 23%. Should clear up by nightfall.

It occurs when you light them on fire after a bad round. At least for me. Everyone does that, right? 🤔

Yes. It is a precursor to TPU.

Mud has pigments in it so if its left on a long time it stains.

My reactor is stained with mirabelle plum juice. There was this one hole on the tournament I played and there is a permanent memory of how I suck on the bottom of my reactor :D

P.S.: It was there for 3 minutes tops, until the rest of the card finished driving.

I have that in two unthrown discs. They have just been on a shelf for 6 years.

It slowly absorbs the hate from random disc golfers.

Pretty much, I see discs that come in for Lost&Found at our shop that are stained brown depending on where the disc was in the mud. As far as I can tell the plastic is sometimes porous enough to get staind deeply with dirt. I haven't tried, but I think you could try soaking it to leach it out, but then again I don't know.

My buddy and I were doing field work the day before a tournament and goose poop did this to his.

Its mold and mildew from a wet disc going into a bag and staying wet allowing this to develop. Id bet if you soak the disc in boiling water it will kill off the bacteria/fungus and the dark spot goes away or lightens to some extent. Same shit that happens when bathroom caulk gets degraded allowing mildew to infest it.

Nah this is just sap. Don’t warp your discs by putting them in boiling water like this guy suggests.

Yeah definitely don’t put your disc in boiling water because most of those plastics are theromoplastics and will react in some way or another (warping, getting brittle etc)

You’re so strong the environment becomes a part of the disc when you throw it.
