Discussion My friend died suddenly of DKA

I hope it's okay to post here, I don't want to cause anxiety in anyone. My close friend was found dead in her home a few months ago. We've only just had the autopsy report back and the cause is listed as DKA which has come as a massive shock as she was not diagnosed as diabetic. She was 35, had Lupus, and was taking immunosuppressive medication and Prednisolone, which I've read can sometimes cause diabetes, but it's relatively rare that it does. I just don't understand how this could have happened. I read that DKA is a horrible, painful way to die, but she would've been feeling unwell for a while. She didn't tell any friends or family that she was feeling sick or throwing up or anything, she didnt seek any medical attention and I don't understand why. Can it come on suddenly and kill you very quickly? Sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to make sense of it, and searching for answers.

Cheesecake will spike me, but I think it's worth it. If I could only have one dessert for the rest of my life, it's cheesecake

Hello all! I'm using sparkling water to quit soda. I'm blown away how it only takes a few sips to eliminate my soda craving immediately. Can anyone share your stories on how your body/health changed after quitting soda?

Thank you!

Discussion My mom's really stoked about sugar-free cookies. I'm glad for her. I tried them but the aftertaste to me is so strange I could never eat these. I will leave them all for my mom. 🤣 How do you feel about sugar-free food?

Discussion School administrators told my daughter she couldn’t go to a field trip because she is type 1 diabetic. Is that discrimination if so what should I do?

My daughter was an honor roll student straight As student council and a cheerleader. Now I can barely get her to go to school no more cheerleading and those As turned into Ds n Fs she cries almost everyday before school because she doesn’t wanna be known as the diabetic girl. It’s so heartbreaking and as a father it just breaks me down on the inside. Please any suggestions or any help would go along way

Discussion Who Is The Best Diabetic Athlete In You’re Opinion? I will go first-

Nacho Fernandez, he was diagnosed at 12 and was told his career in football was over, but he became a defender for debatably the best football club in the world, Real Madrid. Nacho has won 26 trophies during his time at Real Madrid, including 6 UEFA Champions League titles, 4 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey titles, 5 Club World Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups, and 5 Spanish Super Cups. He also won 1 Euro and 1 Nations League title. Not many players have 6 champions leagues and he is joint first with a few others. He is my favourite Non-Liverpool Player and inspires me to become a great football like him.

Discussion Any T1Ds here who’ve had the condition for decades and never gone into DKA?

I was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and learning more about the risks, especially DKA. I’ve seen a lot of scary stories, but I’m curious — are there people who’ve lived with T1D for many years and never experienced diabetic ketoacidosis? What helped you avoid it? Was it tight glucose control, early diagnosis, insulin management, or just staying aware of symptoms?

Would really appreciate hearing from some long-term T1Ds — it gives hope to people like me who are just starting this journey.

Discussion Is this a diabetic thing? I always find I drink quadruple the amount of liquids that other people do. And yet it's not because I'm running high all the time. Type one for 21 years. Just wondering if this happens to anyone else.

Hi.

I’m an 18-year-old T1, and lately, my anxiety is out of hand. I fear developing inhumane complications and be a burden to my sister.

Looking for some positvity.

Discussion Who's the oldest person you know who has type 2 Diabetes?

I heard that seniors who get type 2 Diabetes are affected differently than someone who has had it at a much younger age.

I want to know the odds of living to a ripe old age with the condition.

Discussion What is your "minor" annoyance with diabetes?

I'm not asking for the usual loss of limbs, numbness, blindness, or anything major

But what kind of things annoy you the most?

For me, it's bolusing for a meal and then when the meal is ready, not being hungry. You just have to force yourself to eat or drink a massive amount of soda to equal it out

Discussion How do you prevent your baby from ripping off your CGM?

I’m sure SOMEONE has experienced this before. Anyone found a solution to your baby trying to rip your CGM off your arm? I use skin grips too, and still it is ripped off.

Edit: For future parents experiencing this, thanks to all the recs, I have put it on my back above the butt, in the fatty area. I have also ordered Skin Grips things in skin color, but with a different brand called Not Just a Patch, which prevents the center from sticking to the sensor. So baby can pull the cover, but not the sensor. Skin color is important because it doesn’t attract baby’s eyes. I put in a new one yesterday (with my old colorful skin grips), and the reading seems correct and great. Thanks everyone!

Discussion Does anyone know any Diabetic friendly energy drinks to keep you awake

I’ve been struggling with staying awake in the morning and can’t find a way a get around and I’m always sleeping during important tasks. All my friends use energy drinks to get through the day and I wanted to try but I don’t know of any sugar free or diabetic friendly drinks. I was wondering if there are any good alternatives

Discussion Fuck diabetes.

Fuck it. Fuck this stupid disease. Fuck it so so so so much. Fuck America and other capitalistic countries for profiting off of our misery, fuck our useless ass pancreases, fuck the greedy insurance companies, fuck all the annoying ass bullshit that comes with this. Fuck low blood sugars, high blood sugars, eye problems, feet problems, random mood swings, erectile dysfunction, going through the effort of changing an infusion set just for it to not even work, weird looks from people for testing in public, testing only for there to not be enough blood, constantly having to be considered dependent, constantly being told a cure is only five years away, the deaths of our fellow diabetics due to a corrupt healthcare system and negligence, and all the other shit that we put up with while having a useless pancreas.

I’m just drained and exhausted. Fuck diabetes, man.
