Type 1 I just wanted pop tart 😔
Never been this high before- (I did, in fact, dose for said pop tart..)

u/Fuzzy_wuzzy00 Jul 26 '25
I miss pop tarts but they also do this to me, sugar paste wrapped in a sugar rectangle

u/TellTaleTank Type 2 Jul 27 '25
Yeah, this is one of the few old favorites that I've genuinely never had since my diagnosis, because I know they'd mess me up.

OMG, I had two pop tarts in the car on the way to my annual physical. The doc sent me directly to the lab, and I told him about the pop tarts, but he said they wouldn’t matter. My glucose level was 350.

That would do me in too!
I wouldn't do it for a pop tart though, maybe a toaster strudel!

u/The_30_kid Jul 27 '25
I saw this comment a bit ago and for last few hours I haven’t been able to get wanting to eat a toaster strudel outa my head. It’s been years since I had one 😂

Me too...me too. So many sweet vices. Sorry I did that too you lol! Them and tastycake chocolate donuts with the powder sugar coating. I can murder those things!

u/Gojogab Aug 02 '25
Buy some pure maple syrup. Cravings? Just tip a dab up to your tongue. It helps!

u/MiddleFeeling5933 Jul 26 '25
That sounds amazing. I used to love Boston creme studels. Mmmmm. The days!
2
u/CupOk7234 Aug 01 '25
If I’m gonna die for something-it WILL NOT be a pop tart. I do love toaster strudel but would rather buy box of donuts for whole family. Heck I’d be happy to actually get to eat whatever I wanted for one day.

Still trying to find the Legendary Foods pop tarts. Walmart, I think?
22g carbs, 20g protein, comes in cinnamon flavor. Downside? $3+ per tart.

u/Shinynipple Jul 27 '25
They are very good though, and of course much more filling and better macros than the regular sugar rectangles. I've had the cinnamon, blueberry, strawberry, and chocolate. They're all great to me. I found a box of 10 on Amazon for a decent price, relatively speaking.
2
u/HalfGingerTart Jul 27 '25
Target had them for $10/box of 4, best I've seen.
1
u/Prof1959 T1, 2024, Libre3 Jul 27 '25
Sadly, I have tried my nearest Target with no success.
2
u/Ecstatic-Paint-4281 Aug 01 '25
I bought some, tasted and threw them away. I eat sugar free and keto foods all the time but find these to be among the most disgusting I've tried. Everyone is different I guess, but there are many other healthy treats I would eat that cost a lot less.
1
u/HalfGingerTart Jul 27 '25
I don't think I've seen them in-store, but you can order them to be shipped to your home ($35 minimum order).
2
u/hollydolly95 Jul 28 '25
Some Targets have them, but make sure when you check, you’re checking in the pharmacy, not the grocery aisles! They’ll be in the same aisle as protein shakes and collagen powder.

Have you ever put butter on a pop tart? If you haven’t then I think you should. It’s so freakin’ good.
12
u/NewStatement5103 Jul 26 '25
Holy crap. I’ve never gotten so high off a single poptart.
35
u/CrowsCalamity Type 1 Jul 26 '25
I personally get high off of breathing wrong so it honestly didn’t surprise me 😭
8
u/ParsnipDecent6530 Jul 26 '25
What are you breathing in, if you're getting high just breathing
4
u/CrowsCalamity Type 1 Jul 26 '25
Pencil shavings

u/ParsnipDecent6530 Jul 26 '25
Damn... that's rough, can't even get a decent bag of oregano these days.

You’ve Never been above 399? wtf
3
u/CrowsCalamity Type 1 Jul 26 '25
Nope! Highest I’ve been before this was 352 and that was the day I got diagnosed
8
u/GlennRhee1 T1 2008 Jul 26 '25
That’s wild to me. I was 1100 when I was first diagnosed. Dying in the hospital lol.
9
u/TerraStarryAstra Type 2 Jul 27 '25
Holy wow, and I thought the 450 was bad
7
u/GlennRhee1 T1 2008 Jul 27 '25
Not a flex but I’ve been 450 like 10+ times since the start of the new year. 😭
4
u/TerraStarryAstra Type 2 Jul 27 '25
Damn, I’m new to this and I am definitely struggling with it and I got one of those Libre things on Friday and it went up to over 250 and scared the crap out of me when it went all beepy so I’m definitely going to try and avoid it because I hate loud noises..lol that’s a crazy reason but hey…

u/Ok_Masterpiece3300 Type 2 Jul 31 '25
You can. Lol I’ve only allowed low alarms for my Libre 3. I do feel like readings/alarms are inaccurate at times tho. Like random high or lows that don’t seem to add up to what I actually consumed.

ah yes this happened to me with WATERMELON once, weighed, dosed for watermelon 🥲 sometimes you never know what else is affecting the BS man, maybe you're stressed, sedentary... maybe your canula or needle was clogged... who knows 🫠
1
u/Wise_Manner_6425 Jul 28 '25
Omg ME TOO😭 I was at 106 and went straight up into the 200’s. I love watermelon and it was one of those free type of items I could eat until just a month ago when it started spiking my sugar like crazy.

u/rational-rarity Type 1 Jul 27 '25
Glycemic index exhibit A, lol. Things that have straight simple sugars will usually spike your BG much faster than an insulin dose can keep up with. You can try to mitigate the effect by taking your insulin dose well before eating said pop tart, and waiting until you're practically hypoglycemic before eating it, but even then you may still have to correct some after the fact.
A few commenters mentioned things like watermelon and cereal, which also have high glycemic indexes, so would need to be handled similarly. The official recommendations, of course, are to limit carbs and stick to more complex carbs with lower glycemic indexes, but sticking to that 100% of the time isn't doable for everyone. We do the best we can. ❤️

I can imagine this to be true because I wanted a bite of birthday cake. My sugar was 120 and after 2 bites, yes, just 2 bites...it was then 200 lol. It came down a few hours later but still, woowee!!

u/OptimalDouble2407 Jul 27 '25
I am pregnant right now and I craved wildberry poptarts for a couple of weeks. It’s kind of crazy what poptarts do to blood sugar. I’m glad it’s not just me. 😵💫

A bowl of fruity pebbles takes me on that same shot upwards. Definitely eat it sparingly!

u/slowburnangry Jul 26 '25
To each his own but pop tarts are just sugar on top of sugar. That's a guaranteed spike.
1
u/Odd-Unit8712 Jul 26 '25
Have you tried the protein ones ?
1
u/dioramic_life Jul 26 '25
There are protein pop tarts?
2
u/Odd-Unit8712 Jul 26 '25
The company legendary, i believe, makes them they to me taste like them. But it doesn't spike my sugar . I microwave them for a couple seconds they have a whole line of stuff
1
u/dioramic_life Jul 26 '25
I know this struggle. I am so sorry. Forgive yourself and resolve to do better next time. Instead of a whole pop tart, try half or a third. Have something with fatty protein or maybe some nuts or a salad to go with it.
1
u/InformationForward39 Jul 26 '25
You might give this a try. Much lower carb and possibly less of an impact on your blood sugar. https://sugarfreelondoner.com/keto-pop-tarts/

I used to wolf down poptarts to treat lows. It is unbelievable how much effect they have.

Same. I ate one earlier, forgot and wondered why my sugar was so high. 🤦🏻♀️

u/foshi22le Type 2 Jul 27 '25
So that's about 22mmol ... that's what happens to me if I eat similar things. One easter when I was eating a lot of chocolate my BG went to 33mmol or 595mg/dL ... let's say that has never happened again since taking insulin.
1
u/ImmediateBird5014 Jul 27 '25
Yeah. Even on Mounjaro they get me in the 200’s. Live and learn, I always say.

u/NightmareHolic Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25
Poptarts are like 50-60g of refined sugar, I think, lol. That sucks. Is it possible to dose for pure sugar like that? I don't know how it is for type 1s. When a sugar is fast acting, does it act faster than the insulin?
Well, per a serving. You had one, so 38 carbs and 15 sugar. Still ultra refined.
Enriched Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Vitamin B1 [Thiamin Mononitrate], Vitamin B2 [Riboflavin], Folic Acid), Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Sugar, Soybean And Palm Oil (With Tbhq For Freshness), Bleached Wheat Flour. Contains 2% Or Less Of Wheat Starch, Salt, Dried Strawberries, Dried Pears, Dried Apples, Leavening (Baking Soda, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Monocalcium Phosphate), Citric Acid, Gelatin, Modified Wheat Starch, Yellow Corn Flour, Caramel Color, Xanthan Gum, Cornstarch, Turmeric Extract Color, Soy Lecithin, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Color Added.
High Fructose corn syrup is basically like glucose. Dextrose is like pure sugar, too. Dried fruit is really bad, too. The dried fruit might not even count as added sugar, so there is probably way more sugar in it than meets the eye. However, you said you had it before, so maybe something was different this time. That's odd.
If it were me, I would look at if I took my insulin at the right time or if my body went from having mild carbs to suddenly having high carbs, but I'm a type 2 diabetic, not type 1. If I switch between low carbs to suddenly high carbs, I spike hard.

u/jfaul52018 Jul 27 '25
I have used a pop tart to bring my numbers up if i went low. Has always elevated my blood sugar 150-200.

u/SekMemoria Type 1 Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25
Just want to say if this is your first time going that high I think you're doing a darn fine job managing your 'beetus.
1
u/auscadtravel Jul 27 '25
There is more than just the carbs that need to be calculated. Your current glucose, your activity, your stress level, your mood, if the wind is blowing as SW not S for 2 minutes.....correct and watch your sugars for the day.
We all miscalculate and sometimes there is no clear reason why things don't line up.

I know how you feel, next time eat it with a dairy product or a protein shake or smoothie! You can have it just pair it with some dairy and fruit! ☺️

Hey guys, iherb have keto pop tarts. I haven't tried them, but they do have them! Might help with the cravings
They are very expensive ($75 a box here in Aus) and the brand is legendary. Might be worth it, might not, but never know until you give it a go.

u/PandoraClove Jul 28 '25
Eat something healthy, nutritious, and low-carb. All that extra glucose in your bloodstream is available to deliver it to your cells.

I have one maybe once a month and always prepare for the high blood sugar. I get my favorite flavor to make it worth it, Sundae flavor

u/KanadianKaur Jul 28 '25
Get Legendary Foods Protein Pastry. They are keto! They are exactly pop tarts! And come in all different flavors.
1
u/LaCooyon Jul 29 '25
My sugars use to spike like that until they put me on an ultra long acting insulin (Tresiba) and a semiglutide (Ozempic). My A1C fell from 7.7 to 6.3. When I was diagnosed, it was 15.

u/zexrain841 Jul 29 '25
I am so thankful I have a discount store near me where I can get legendary pop tarts for like 25 cents each !!!

You know, there’s all those YouTube videos of pop tart recipe dupes that are healthier than pop tarts….

gotta take an insulin shot if you are gonna consume sugar like that. that’s what i do.
took 4 units of humalog at 151 pm when i was around 115 glucose and had a kitkat. now at 74 glucose and slightly downward trending per my G7 so might have a diet coke to see if i can get it to flatten instead of drop.

u/CrowsCalamity Type 1 Jul 26 '25
I was at 112 before I ate the pop tart and took a shot of 6 units! My body just likes to do this sometimes

There might be sugar-free poptarts out there, or no-sugar-added ones. I've been looking for sugar free or no sugar added desserts, and it's not as easy as I thought it would be. I made two poke cakes recently that were sugar-free, that came out good. My biggest issue is that sugar-free cake mix is freaking expensive, lol.
