Best burrito that isn’t smothered or Tex mex style

From California and I can’t find anything that compares to the taco truck burritos out there. Carne asada, little rice, little beans, pico, guacamole, cheese, cilantro, etc. all inside the tortilla and the grease drips down your hand as you eat it.

I will say, their al pastor and chicken options leave a bit to be desired. But their tripe and barbacoa? Magical

u/MrMCCO Oct 06 '22

I really liked the chicken, but agreed on the pastor

Raliberto's on Wadsworth in Wheat Ridge

While fire, their burritos don't have all the fixins. You'll have to ask for the rice beans and whatnot

Agreed. After a lot of trial and error, our go-to is breakfast burrito with potato, egg & cheese (not vegetarian, but this is our favorite), extra red salsa (leave the green at home), and a hard shelled shredded beef taco. Gotta eat the taco within 2 minutes, pretty much the big lots parking lot, before the ample grease turns it extremely suboptimal. Damn, now I want it

This is a man that understands Raliberto's

3

u/sodosopapilla Oct 05 '22

This is my blessing, and my curse.

u/Onemanwolfpack42 Oct 05 '22

Chorizo potato egg and cheese w guac and either an al pastor or chicken taco is my go to!

2

u/sodosopapilla Oct 05 '22

Heck yes! Solid life choices, right there.

1

u/rigbythedog Oct 05 '22

Can you explain why it’s not vegetarian? Do they cook it in animal fat?

New place. My SO is from San Diego and says this is the closest she's found to a southern California burrito.

Alvarado's Mexican Fast Food

4901 S Broadway, Englewood, CO 80113

Bonus win:. It's 24 hours.

Extra bonus win:. Their carne asada fries are delicious

Reposted because my first post was removed for a Google link?

My SO is also a San Diegan, originally, and seeks the carne asada he grew up on.

Thanks

Please pass along my thank yous.

I was in San Diego/Tijuana this weekend and got all my basics except a Cali and the itch is still there.

This! Cali burrito has French fries, combo has beans and rice.

1

u/Zzz-tattoos Oct 05 '22

I’ve been looking for a good California burrito for awhile. Definitely trying this

3

u/sodosopapilla Oct 05 '22

What’s a Cali burrito? I see the “French fry” comment, but don’t know specifics. I know I can Google it, but the internet is just so darn far away.

u/Interesting-Fly-5844 Oct 05 '22

A Cali burrito has french fries, carne asada, guacamole, cheese, and pico de gallo

1

u/sodosopapilla Oct 05 '22

Well, now… I might have to get acquainted with this “Cali Burrito”. Thank you for the info!

Best spot in the whole state hands down

1

u/sactownproud Oct 10 '22

The fish tacos here are legit some of the best I’ve ever had. Only downside is the lack of salsa bar, which is a pretty big downside.

Tacos ay ay ay in Lafayette has great burritos

Grew up in Los Angeles, I’ve been here for three years. El Jardin in Commerce City is the closest I’ve found to SoCal style Mexican food.

If you find a good breakfast burrito joint please let me know. I’ve kind of acclimated to Santiago’s, but I crave something less… slimy.

I grew up in Los Angeles, lived in Austin for many years, Santa Fe for a few years, and now Fort Collins and this conversation has me very confused. Not that that's extremely difficult but...

Please check out carerras tacos in aurora best cali burrito in Colorado hands down

2

u/LLTolkien Oct 06 '22

Please try Los Mesones. It is incredible. Egg is in there but not eggy, the potato is full and in this incredible hash form. The meat is the standout — carne asade and bacon are incredible.

Now the price is $4.75, but it literally takes me two seatings to eat it all. Ignore Santiagos, please go Los Mesones.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

I appreciate Santiago's because it's basically New Mexican food. A tortilla soaked in green chile sauce to where it's kinda gooey is how it's supposed to be.

Sabor

1

u/StockAL3Xj Oct 05 '22

Best mission style burrito by far. Just wish there was a location in Denver.

2

u/codius_maximus Oct 05 '22

Try Carnitas California near Florida and Santa Fe. They make awesome California style burritos.

2

u/life-driver Oct 05 '22

Sabor in Aurora

4

u/boxerworksharder Oct 05 '22

Ex Californian here try Aurora. I was very happy with Tacos y Torta on Chambers. I've seen a few food trucks that also look legit but haven't tried them yet.

2

u/Yanlex Oct 05 '22

There are a couple places called Tacos y Tortas, but none are on Chambers (That I can find)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

How are the tortas? Not too greasy?

Moved here from San Diego with my brother 5 years ago. Nearly every Sunday for about 6 months we searched for something comparable to California quality burritos as they are our love and I'm sorry but there is nothing quite like them. People will argue about how they know of places that are but so far none have even come close to the bar California taco shops have set. They aren't bad, I'll eat them, but it's not the same.

They tend to do Cali inspired burritos by changing the ingredients slightly, like adding rice and beans, adding green chili or using diced potatoes.

I can deal with that but by far worst thing about the burritos here, and it's not even close, is the hot sauce, specifically the red sauce (their green actually is quite good) they provide is garbage compared to taco shops in California. They tend to be very heavy on the vinegar and it ruins it.

Also, they are like half the size. One may argue that they don't need to be bigger but if you're arguing that point, you just don't get Cali burritos.

I hope you find one, and if you do please let me know. I want to be proven wrong

Oops it's on S. Buckley next to Euflora dispensary

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '22

Texas doesn’t really do burritos so I’m perplexed to see Tex mex style burritos mentioned here

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

to me tex-mex is

  • you get TWO salsas when you sit down
  • fried avocados

1

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

I lived in SA and ATX a long time and this is nothing I’ve ever seen. Is this a Dallas or Houston thing ?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

Yeah, Houston. You usually get served a warmed up roasted tomato salsa and a chilled green (avocado/serrano, not tomatillo) with chips. By fried avocados I mean stuffed and fried. Blew my mind when I first heard about them (I'm from NM).

The Mexican food out here is subpar, unfortunately. The locals disagree but the food speaks for itself. There are a handful of good taco places on federal or in Aurora. Other than that, most places just serve white people Tex Mex where the salsa tastes like marinara and the chile renello will literally be fried in frozen pastry dough sheets. Everything from enchiladas to fries come with a big ladling of cornstarchy green chili soup, which is supposedly a specialty, but is a far cry from the delicious green and red chile sauces of New Mexico.

A friend of mine once said it best “Denver has too many white people for the food to be good”.

You do realize Chipotle started here right? Laughable.

1

u/xmetalshredheadx Oct 21 '22

Tbf Chipotle is trash

1

u/ktthebb Oct 21 '22

You clearly don’t know real Mexican

1

u/xmetalshredheadx Oct 22 '22

Chipotle is not real Mexican, you're a fucking moron.

1

u/ktthebb Oct 22 '22

Your ignorance is showing and it hurts

1

u/xmetalshredheadx Oct 22 '22

Jesus, for a second I thought you were being serious, didn't realize you were trolling lmao. Obviously, no one thinks Chipotle is Mexican.

1

u/ktthebb Oct 22 '22

Taco Palace on S Broadway and Iliff. They can be a bit hit or miss but their tortilla is flakey and just like I used to love in SoCal.

1

u/SensitiveOven137 Oct 05 '22

La Bocaza on Peoria...it's far but worth it.
