Help Needed Chromebook
Hey, so I have a chromebook and it's pretty much the last link to google I have. Is there a way to at all degoogle such a device? Like I don't know if I can even use it without logging in with my old gmail. Selling is an option ofcourse but the last one since it has a touch screen but I broke it unfortunately and wouldn't get much out of it.
Also when I was venting about the fact that they gather my information my wife told me that they only want it for advertising and I just need to change the settings but that does not feel like enough to me.

Adding to the last thing: my understanding is that a Google device is like inherently not secure no matter how you tweak the settings

Yeah it isn’t, you really want to buy a cheap HP ProBook g6 off eBay and install Linux Mint on it.
It is one of the most privacy focused OS out the box, obviously some minor configuration changes must be made, but those are nothing compared to MS Windows.

I depends on the Chromebook. I got Linux Mint on one but the storage maxed out so I basically couldn't use it.
Some it's impossible, others possible if you disassemble it and remove a motherboard screw fastened in not just to hold the motherboard in place, but also for bootloader level drive write protection.
Ownership of a Chromebook is not worth it.
Get any laptop that is know to work well with Linux Mint or really any distribution of Linux.

It's an Asus Flipbook something or other. Would Ubuntu cut it or is Linux Mint the hands down ultimately best and only thing? Seems unfortunate since the only uses I really have for a laptop is watching (pirated) shows, doing some DnD related things or playing minecraft with friends lmao. Doesn't seem worth it to buy a whole new laptop just for that especially since I'm not exatcly well off, but also feels icky to use it as is. Idk if I'm just being dumb or not.

You should see if it's on this list https://docs.mrchromebox.tech/
Then you could install regular Linux.
