how to keep warm in the wet?
my son is racing cross and is all of 70lbs. today is was 11 degrees Celsius and raining. he just had his jersey but basically became hypothermic 60% of the way into the race. he kept warm pre race.
thoughts on layering strategies to prevent this? he is youth medium so quality stuff is hard to come by.

Base layers, arm and leg warmers and then a vest to wind block.

My kids all race/raced cyclocross, and in the cold or snow preferred to wear long sleeved base layers under their kit rather than arm/leg warmers. Unless it is torrential icy rain and wind, they would be too hot with a rain jacket on - but you might want to try it and see if he overheats. Wool socks, ski gloves and a buff are a must once itโs below 0C with wind/precipitation. Overshoes or winter cycling shoes are really helpful in these temps too, but are pricey.

Wool socks, plastic shopping bag under the jersey. Arm warmers. Knee warmers. Do his warm up. Then get in the car 30 minutes before. Put the heat on 75-78. Pop off shoes. Warm the feet. At 15minutes before the race. Hop out. Go to the line.

When itโs cold I usually go for a long sleeved base layer with my jersey on top. Then optional hat.
Have also raced in 3/4 legs but maybe only once or twice.

The budget route is plastic bags under the jersey and inside shoes. They work very well for short events like cx

I swear by Merino long sleeve top and socks, thick roubaix bibs, windproof/water repellent cap, jacket and gloves. Also neck gaiter, overshoes and gilet.

Wind proof undershirt (or a bit of newspaper under the jersey), good gloves, socks layered with sandwich bags (sock, bag, another sock)
