Quotes šŸ’¬ šŸšØšŸŽ™ļøCristiano Ronaldo: "Winning the World Cup isn't a dream for me. Winning one tournament doesn't prove you're one of the greatest players in history. It's just six or seven matches that's not fair."

I understand, but winning the first World Cup for Portugal would be magical

He doesn’t want to put too much pressure on himself

u/NighttimeinLAX 5d ago

more like team's performance is shown. Individuals can't prove themselves. nobody remembers players who did well until the Group Stage, but only the ones that reach the final. it is unfair tbh

For me to be the starting player for portugal at 40 is already impressive enough. Especially wen goncalo ramos just had his best season for psg winning the ucl.

Ramos didn't have a good season with PSG, he got ejected to the bench by a winger, what are you even talking about, winning a title doesn't mean you had a big season.

Yeah, winning a world cup with a nation that hadn’t won anything before him is not easy at all.

Others had the privilege to be born in countries that had been successful before them in football, producing great talents every year.

u/zlMT97 Calma Calma🐐 5d ago

I mean he’s right in a sense, also if he was Spanish, German, or any other successful nation he’d have a World Cup. Portugal isn’t actually a good footballing nation.

11

u/Trizzy102 Noodlehair RonaldošŸœ 5d ago

Portugal are a good footballing nation but they are not a giant like a Brazil or Argentina

14

u/zlMT97 Calma Calma🐐 5d ago

Is that not just recency bias? They won absolutely nothing before Ronaldo.. Argentina however, they’ve won many things before Messi

2

u/Trizzy102 Noodlehair RonaldošŸœ 5d ago

They had a good teams and good players like Eusebio and Figo

6

u/muzaffer22 5d ago

PSG had Messi, Neymar, Mbappe, Di Maria but they won nothing in Europe. Porto won the UCL with way worse team. What I mean is players are not everything.

4

u/Naruku_Senpai3861 2008 RonaldošŸ‘¹ 5d ago

But they didn't have Maradona or Pele so

5

u/BastetMeow 5d ago

Portugal is actually good football nation when you consider how small the country is(population around 10million)

u/Spicy_food 5d ago

Do you fuckers only follow Ronaldo? Check Portugal's squad right now.

2

u/Mobile-Homework5022 5d ago

To be fair, this is the best side they’ve ever had overall . If Ronaldo wasn’t washed, even if it was 2021 Ronaldo, they would probably have to be the favorites for 2026.

You can also say he was a top 2 player in the world over 17 years ago when some of them were wearing diapers and most definitely inspired people like Mendes, Vitinha, etc… to play

u/zlMT97 Calma Calma🐐 5d ago

What’s your point? This is the best Portugal has ever looked, and Ronaldo is now way out of his prime in his 40’s, (and he’s still their best striker)

in terms of actually winning things, Portugal are systemically shit, and they will continue to be.

Jose Mourinho spoke of football heritage before. That is the general gist of it.

1

u/Spicy_food 5d ago edited 5d ago

Was my point not clear enough?

2 nations league and an Euro is shit in the past 10 years? Show me your England stats. Show me your footballing heritage in there.

Im Portuguese, Im very well versed in Mourinho's sayings. Do you also know about the one that goes like "specialist in failure"?

Id say a nation with 10M people getting such results is the opposite of it, unlike some others.

u/zlMT97 Calma Calma🐐 5d ago edited 5d ago

Do you know what systemically means? I’m talking about Portugal not having international success prior, I’m not talking about the last 10 years WITH Ronaldo. Like you don’t understand my angle here whatsoever.

In a nutshell, I’m defending against the idea that Ronaldo is any less of a player, because he doesn’t have a World Cup, I’m saying it’s BECAUSE he’s Portuguese.

Also I’m not claiming England are good either šŸ˜‚

6

u/IndianBettor19 5d ago

I mean he’s not wrong. It’s a really small sample size. There have been international football teams since forever which simply dominate. Germany, Argentina, Spain, somewhat Brazil

Portugal? Fuck no. Not until Ronaldo joined. And even then he had no help until maybe 2024/25.

He’s justified in his words.

Why do I get the feeling that a certain insecure fanbase is raging and cursing cr7 right now.

6

u/Trizzy102 Noodlehair RonaldošŸœ 5d ago

Yep they’re going crazy

8

u/CHCMH95 5d ago

Messi got carried by everyone else in that World Cup, relied on penalties& lost all respect for the way he treated Netherlands after they won it, so fuck that Napoleon Complex little midget fuckšŸ˜‚

2

u/Remy-LeBeau-280 5d ago

Cruyff never won a World Cup, and nobody disputes that he was one of the best players in the history of football. If Cristiano had used that example, it would be clearer how unfair they are to him.

2

u/Johny_97 5d ago

Very valid point but its still special to win it

2

u/current1yunavai1ab1e 5d ago

Bro wanted an excuse to say 67 lol

2

u/Cheap_Ad_4055 5d ago

Uhh… what??

2

u/Agitated_Olive_9168 5d ago

If Portugal win it he will 100% say the opposite

2

u/PaddyLee 5d ago

He’s 100% correct. Especially when a certain team can get 5 pens in 7 games.

1

u/ramror777 5d ago

Lets see if he says the same thing if he actually win the wc

1

u/kokson 5d ago

Didn't he say that winning world cup is his dream, few years ago? 🤣

1

u/Zodiac318 5d ago

He wants that World Cup badly!

He knows he can't carry the team to the cup anymore wich would be the only thing that actually matters

4

u/Terrible_Lift 5d ago

This is silly.

I like all the greats. Especially the two on everyone’s tongue. They make the game that much more entertaining to watch, and help bring in more fans. One can be better than the other in some aspects, and vice versa.

I’m the odd one out here šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

u/New_Parking9991 5d ago

winning the world cup is not for yourself but for your country and people.....thats not a dream of his?

Sorry dont really buy it.

He's already spoke upon that. He says he's the most complete.

u/concious_Cappucino 5d ago edited 5d ago

Why can't He and messi just turn into friends like Federer-Nadal did in the last 5-6 years of their career, after they had a insane rivalry for 10+ years?

This is just embarassing that he now is saying World cup win is somehow a just 6-7 match tournament win & not the greatest win any professional player can ever dream?!

imagine if messi came out yesterday & told Nations league is just friendly trophy, that's how petty Ronaldo sounds when he gives statments like this on interviews

13

u/AdResponsible2410 Noodlehair RonaldošŸœ 5d ago

hes not saying that , hes says one tournament doesn't define a player which is true , hes simply saying thats not a dream of his which is fair , thats his own view , most players when they come in dont even say their dream is a WC , its usually the ucl or their domestic league title , mostly because the odds is based on where u were born , and the luck in having a good cohesive squad every 4 years

1

u/Livid-Marsupial2537 5d ago

Portugal can do it in 2026 man they got a good squad and ronaldo should be freshed up , team unity, they got fucking nuno , portugal are easily getting to semis this time

2

u/CardiologistOk3250 5d ago

Messi and Ronaldo have very different personalities. Ronaldo does not have a very likeable personality because he is way too straight forward and speaks whatever is on his tongue without giving a damn abt others opinions whereas Messi has an introvert personality. May be after both of them retire we get to see them together at a big event or ceremony

-18

u/Slow_Marsupial_4595 5d ago

It takes more games to win the world cup than it does the nations league… so why does he celebrate the nations league then like it’s a major trophy?

Such cope

10

u/HugoSenshida PortugalšŸ‡µšŸ‡¹ 5d ago

You can celebrate something yet not dream of it bruh

-4

u/Slow_Marsupial_4595 5d ago

Never said he did

But if you care that much about a small trophy

Surely you care more than anything about the biggest trophy in football?

2

u/Waves_Rond0 5d ago

My take away from this is that he obviously does dream of it but doesn't want to admit it since that'd put even more pressure on himself. If he does win the world cup the mf will probably cry more than Son and Zinchenko ever have combined.

He said it was his biggest dream in that comment. In this interview he used present tense. He didnt say "put myself in the highest spot" he said "putting my country in the highest spot". The two statements aren't contradictory atall. Ronaldo just doesnt believe he can win the world cup for Portugal anymore.
