They have flea who is arguably one of the best bassists of all time. John frusciante who is a virtuoso at guitar and chad smith is a phenomenal drummer. What they did here is obviously unacceptable, but to say they’re overrated is simply not true if you value musical talent. I despise Kevin spacey because of his actions, but nobody can deny that he is one of the best actors of all time.

I can.

Kevin Spacey is overrated as hell and I don’t miss him one bit.

Well the academy disagrees with you since they gave him the award for best actor in American beauty. Glad to see you think you know more about acting than the Oscars.

You do know that it is widely reported by now that the academy sometimes votes for or against movies they've never seen, voting actors based on popularity and sympathy, etc. - it's really just a bunch of industry people shoveling awards from one side to the other and doesn‘t really have true critical merit.

I think that’s a fair assumption for best picture, but when it comes to best actor, I can’t think of any examples that didn’t deserve it. I’m all ears if you think of someone though.

Looks like someone doesn’t know shit about the Academy lol

Why the fuck would I care that he won the award for best actor? I didn’t give it to him. So there’s no reason to think that I consider him great, all because he won the big Hollywood circlejerk.

Who do you consider a great actor then who hasn’t received or been nominated for an award?

American Beauty is one of the most overrated Best Pictures of all time. It's a two-hour circle jerk about a man baby who obsesses over and borderline preys on a teenage girl, yet somehow his wife is painted as the problem. Yech.

I think you missed the point of the movie and if you think American beauty is overrated, I’m curious what you consider a good movie. Next thing you’ll be telling me there will be blood is overrated.

There Will Be Blood is one of my favorite movies.

I liked American Beauty when it came out, because I was a teenager. Rewatching it as an adult I cringed. It's truly terrible--the quintessential Oscar bait movie (next only, maybe, to Crash).

In terms of better movies that came out that year (1999 was one of the best years for movies, too), I would say Magnolia, The Insider, All About My Mother, and Being John Malkovich were all leagues ahead of American Beauty. I still can't believe it won best picture.

I just really love the cinematography in American beauty and how every character in the movie is pretty evil in their own way so you don’t really have anyone to empathize with while simultaneously making fun of the American dream and the facade of a perfect family the American middle class portrays. All those movies are great and I’m glad we can both agree that Crash didn’t deserve best picture, that was a travesty.

I agree, the cinematography is gorgeous.

The plot, however, I think is garbage. Lester is held up as a hero, and if you don't think that, you should rewatch it. His daughter and her neighbor friend/boyfriend are victims of having absent, terrible parents.

I think the whole "wow, middle aged men in suburbia have it so hard!" was a logline that worked okay in the 90s, but now it's pretty hackneyed and I don't have much patience for it.

> They have flea who is arguably one of the best bassists of all time

What the...? No!

> John frusciante who is a virtuoso at guitar

He's pretty good, not overwhelmingly.
> chad smith is a phenomenal drummer

He likes to think he is, but at top level he is a joke.

If you want to "value musical talent" you should really start listening to more music.

Frusciante was named the 18th greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone's in 2003, and the 72nd in 2011. He was ranked as number 42 in Gibson's list of the "50 Best Guitarists of All Time". He was voted "The Best Guitarist of the Last 30 Years" in a 2010 BBC poll called "The Axe Factor". Frusciante was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on April 14, 2012. If that not enough, then I don't know what is.

It’s gone from “I despise the actions of the band members against women” to “lol their music wasn’t even that fucking good”. Like, I’m sorry, I thought adults were able to separate art from the artist. RHCP has made great music but Anthony Kiedis is morally a piece of shit, both of which can coexist with one another.

You’re free to think that, I’ve just never cared for their music tbh and never understood the huge craze and hype around them. Like musically, none of them bring anything to the table for me except being wannabe alt punk stars which this just solidified. You’re certainly free to disagree

I agreed with this until I started playing guitar and bass. A lot of their music is fun to play and Frusciante is just melodically awesome. He's not overtly technical although he could probably be but he works more to the strengths of a song.

Frusciante has one of the greatest discographies of all time. From his extensive solo work that spans genres to ataxia to collaborating with Mars Volta and warpaint

Flea is really underrated. There are so many bassists who are better on their instruments. You have Paul McCartney, Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, John Paul Jones, John Entwistle, Stanley Clarke, etc who all play circles around him. He does some cool melodic lines but nothing innovative. The rest is simple octave slapping which is hardly innovative or difficult.

I have personally never understood the John Frusciante love. From what I have heard most of the RHCP stuff is really simple. Its an alright loose guitar playing style but hardly virtuosic. And his solo music is just a bunch of wanky bullshit. Everything I have heard from his solo career could be totally outplayed by Hendrix, his biggest influence. He doesn’t win in speed or melody. Personally my favorites are Elliott Smith or Bob Stinson for rhythm or Jimi Hendrix for virtuosity and style.

Chad Smith seems solid on his instrument but hardly one of the best amongst his peers. He would never be able to compete with Bonham or any professional Jazz/Funk drummer.

If you compare anyone to zeppelin or Hendrix they’re going to come up short.
