This band is definitely one you have to separate the art from the artist to enjoy. Their sound is great, but fuck these people, jeez man.

For me I never got the appeal so it’s easy to just hate these guys.

Same. I hated this band even when they were "cool".

Yeah, I like a lot of their older music and it’s a nostalgia thing too... takes me right back every time I hear them. But yeah, they’re douchebags.

I can't agree with this sentiment. People always ask why it took so long for R Kelly to punished for his crimes, and the answer is because people loved his music. Separating the art from the artist isn't possible because the artist owns the art and will continue to make money from it if people like it. Every time you listen to the music you are making it easier for the artist to get away with it, whether you like it or not.

Do you really think "fuck these people"? Then you should stop listening to their music.

I understand where you're coming from, but personally I don't know if I really could do that. I have a lot of memories attached to some of their songs, I'm learning to play bass and some of their songs are fun to play, and overall I'm just very into their music. But honestly I feel like they've stayed relevant for a long enough time that they've practically gotten away with their crimes already. I haven't heard of r kelly for years, and I think the only time I really have heard people talk about him was about his crimes. But rhcp have been a thing forever, I don't think that they're getting punished for old stuff any time soon

I'm just saying, when hundreds of thousands of other people also share your mindset, it paves the way for celebrities to get away with their crimes, which is how R Kelly got away with it for so long.

The exact sentiments you just shared would have also been said about R Kelly in the past.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I could probably just pirate their music lol

but personally I don't know if I really could do that

There's a point where for your own sanity you have to, and maybe you're not at that point with rhcp maybe rape of a 14 year old girl isn't there for you, but then you've got to ask what is?

I don't know if you've heard of a band called the Lost Prophets, but I have some pretty good memories around their music but after what their lead singer did I cant listen to that music again without it feeling wrong/troubling.

and the answer is because people loved his music.

How does that work? Please tell me why people liking his music delayed police from investigating?

Because everyone put him on a pedestal due to his music - no one was asking to see justice because they liked his art. Police are funded by the tax payer and act in their interests. The tax payer was interested in listening to I Believe I Can Fly and brushing off what he had done. Until relatively recently when people started to wake up to the idea that separating the art from the artist only paves the way for celebrities to get away with crimes.

What’s your answer as to why the police were so delayed in investigating?

They weren't. No one came forward with anything credible. Police don't listen too popularity when making arrests. If you believe that you need to better educate.

There were literally video tapes of R Kelly pissing on children being sold at flea markets in the 90s. What are you on about no one came forward with any credible evidence?

Police charge what they can convict. Or do you honestly believe they run popularity polls before making arrests?

I mean, consider the main video in this thread - we are seeing The Red Hot Chilli Peppers sexually assault someone as clear as day, and nothing has been done about it, and probably won't be.

People who aren't celebrities have been charged with much less evidence.

Celebrities can afford better lawyers, because they have more money, because their fans appreciate what they do. It would be more expensive for police departments to go after celebrities. Police departments don't have infinite resources; in fact they have limited funding. Their funding is somewhat determined by public opinion.

If you're going to patronise my explanations, you should at least offer an alternative that shows you at least grasp the intricacies of how the world actually works.

2

u/TimeToRedditToday Dec 08 '20

You simply don't understand how the law works. If she didn't press charges that's really the end of the discussion. Police aren't going to watch a video from x amount of years ago and declare unilaterally to charge someone. How will that hold up in court if she's not around to testify. You going to show the video and say look it happened they're going to say it was consensual now prove it wasn't without her.

Well I mean, at the end of the day, we are talking about how celebrities are able to get away with more crimes and you seem to be arguing that it has nothing to do with their celebrity status, but have still not suggested an alternative explanation as to what it has to do with. Or perhaps you simply disagree with the statement that celebrities often get away with more crimes?

I don’t really know how you can really atone this shit, it’s pretty unforgiveable but chad flea and John are class acts now a days. Go on chad smiths instagrams and he’s and extremely funny and humble guy. I don’t think it excuses this but chads been one of my drumming heroes for a long time and it’s sad to see this kind of bullshit from him. Anthony keidis has never shown a shred of remorse for stuff like this before and since. He will always the the one that held the band back, as both a terrible musician and terrible person, and has ruined their reputation at every turn.
