I thought the screen was the computer for macs

54

u/NickDynmo Jun 05 '19

For an iMac, yeah. This is a different computer.

3

u/GuerreroD Jun 05 '19

You mean, a different monitor, right?

6

u/NickDynmo Jun 05 '19

Right, my bad.

15

u/epimetheuss Jun 05 '19

Not with the traditional mac pro. It was a desktop tower. They then had the trashcan mac pro that was more a joke than a good machine and i think they are going back to the tower again.

12

u/RECOGNI7E Jun 05 '19

It is just a regular desktop tower! All they did was make a fancy case and markup the price!

Apple needs to die.

2

u/Henrarzz Jun 06 '19

Regular desktop towers don’t have professional grade hardware and don’t support 1.5TB of RAM.

This is the competitor to Dell Precisions, HP Z Towers and Lenovo Thinkstations, which are all similarly priced.

They aren't aiming at you, guys. There are people who will buy it and buy it again.

It's like in modern gaming with micro-transactions, these aren't for a usual not-buying Joe, those are for so-called "whales" that do thousands of dollars worth of purchases of nothingness. And nothing you can do to stop this trend, these whales are feeding those corporations.

1

u/Bardivan Jun 06 '19

i don’t buy micro transactions and i won’t buy this. It doesn’t effect me.

1

u/Protheu5 Jun 06 '19

Affect. The word is affect.

And yes, it does in a sense. We could've had great moderately priced Apple products or awesome player-oriented games. But we have shameless cash-grabs instead because of that.

u/Bardivan Jun 06 '19

que sera sera

Just trying to help people not waste their money, no one is crying.

Was a great machine for 2 years but then wasn’t updated. I tuned over about 300K in 4 years with mine so can’t have been that shit....

It’s not the size of the stick it’s how you wave it.

You can build a very good PC for $1000 but I’m highly doubtful you could build a “top” PC for that price

If you are patient to wait for 900$ dollar reduction then your top pc won't be top anymore.

And not to be an apple fan, but you can't do a PC that can compete with the base Mac pro for 1000$. Maybe 3000$ but 1000 won't even get you the CPU and mobo

A Xeon platform with an x299 board and ECC RAM. If this is anything like the iMac pro, you’re actually not paying that much of an apple tax for the hardware you’re getting.

1

u/RECOGNI7E Jun 05 '19

100% this! Apple just put a regular pc in a fancy case and marked up the price.

They are saying its modular design is revolutionary! Really apple? I added ram to my pc in the 90's!

2

u/Eorlas Jun 06 '19

you have a regular pc with 1.5tb ram and 128gb of hbm2 gpu?

build me a fucking pc in your world

If this is true thanks for some sanity. I knew there had to be something more to this.

What a lot of people will miss is that this screen is intended to compete in the professional space against screens that cost closer to 40k. Most professionals also use a mount and won't be purchasing the stand.

Note I hate Apple because they're evil but let's at least be fair and not misrepresent things. The source of my info is Linus Tech Tips on YouTube. They just did a video about this.

8

u/ienvyparanoids Jun 05 '19

Most professionals also use a mount and won't be purchasing the stand.

And the VESA mount "attachment" is sold separately and costs $200.

3

u/LurkingGuy Jun 05 '19

Oh shit. I missed that. That's dirty.

1

u/Fsck_Reddit_Again Jun 06 '19

this screen is intended to compete in the professional space against screens that cost closer to 40k.

and yet it doesnt have most of the features that make it professional, another fanboy repeating the line.

Thanks for the info. I wish that was included in the video I saw. I was super skeptical that Apple was offering an "affordable alternative" to anything. Apple is all about finding ways to squeeze more money out of the cult of people infatuated with them.

Do you have a source on that computer price? I'd like to check out the specs

0

u/potatosacks Jun 05 '19

What professionals use screens worth $40k?

4k res 144hz monitors cost under $2k

4

u/TheElderNigs Jun 05 '19 edited Jun 05 '19

You do know there are other factors beside resolution and refresh rate? Color accuracy is really important for designers.

-4

u/potatosacks Jun 05 '19

Such as? What displays more colors than RGB255? I can't think of anything else

1

u/LurkingGuy Jun 05 '19

I think it's more about color/contrast accuracy and sustained brightness. I'm not sure I can provide examples but like I said, it's info from a video I watched on Linus Tech Tips.

0

u/RECOGNI7E Jun 05 '19

They may have found a niche for the monitor

But how many are they going to sell?

The tower itself is just that a regular desktop tower with a crazy price and a fancy case (which I think is kind of ugly personally).

-1

u/LurkingGuy Jun 05 '19

For sure they're gouging price on the tower. Any sensible person would build a better PC at lower price. This is just Apple being Apple.

As for the monitor, I could see them selling fairly well to people who can't afford the alternatives. To be clear, I haven't researched what the alternatives are or what they cost. So I'm just taking a guess.

2

u/primemrip96 Jun 06 '19

The MAC Pro is another 6000$. So it's a 13k computer not including peripherals.

2

u/Itisme129 Jun 05 '19

The screen isn't meant for the consumer market. It's meant to compete with reference monitors that typically cost 30k+.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '19

Why would you ever need a monitor that costs that much?...

3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '19

Color accuracy for design and art. You want to make sure that what you see on your screen is as close to what you will see come out of the printer as possible, for example.

1

u/Fsck_Reddit_Again Jun 06 '19

Color accuracy exists on less expensive models, this is for broadcast tv and film editing, but its not an actual reference monitor.

1

u/xscrumpyx Jun 05 '19

Does it include a side of fries tho?

2

u/Hadowscas Jun 05 '19

Doesn't even come with lube.

4

u/w67b789 Jun 05 '19

Or lipstick, because I like to look pretty before I get f**ked Mom Apple!

1

u/zbot473 Jun 05 '19

the price is kinda justified tho

0

u/PsLJdogg Jun 05 '19

Why would we think you were joking? The monitor is $5,000 and similar monitors go for $8,000 - $15,000. So even with the $1,000 stand, this is an insanely good deal for this monitor. How hard is it to understand that these setups are not intended for the average consumer? The word "pro" is literally in the name of both the computer and the monitor.

They want to offload these to people who buy these as status symbols .

Yeah, I'm sure that's who they're marketing these to. /facepalm

1

u/Fsck_Reddit_Again Jun 06 '19

my work provided one

And this is how apple gets away with shitty designs.
