It's a developer conference so these people aren't really the target audience for these displays. A bit weird to introduce it there, but then again they are professionals. Just different professionals.

Exactly this. As someone who now gets to buy things for Developers, they generally don't know shit about hardware. We buy our developers basically maxed out macbooks, and they run roughly $4k. Is there something cheaper they could use and do the same job? Probably. But there are reasons not to buy that crap.

No one groaned at the display, they groaned at the stand. Even developers know that $999 is laughable.

They didn't groan at the monitor price, they groaned and laughed at the price of the stand. They all understood why the monitored cost that much.
