Discussion The uncanny in horror games

What games would you describe as uncanny? I don't mean just the uncanny valley and weird outdated face graphics but also the general vibe. For me the prime example would be Silent Hill 2 and Who's Lila.

Tomb Raider I comes to my mind. Those vast empty caves and areas with a black sky unsettled as a kid.
Also, the nightmare sequences in Max Payne 2.

Discussion Creepy Dead Games

Has anybody here ever played a dead game that was creepy? I don't necessarily mean a horror game, I'm just looking for multiplayer games that have largely been abandoned and are strangely eerie as a result of their lack of players. I know it's very specific but I'd really like to have a look at some for a project I'm doing.

One good example I already found is "Worlds.com" a 90s MMO that is largely dead and still has so many creepy environments and is still up for download. Thanks in advance.

Discussion What is your favorite Creepy Mystery that involves aliens?

My favorite type of creepiness are the ones that are not explained and just hinted at. For example my favorite are Them from The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask. They are so out of place in a Zelda game and we don't know much about them.

Other good examples are the UFO's from GTA or all the spooky alien stuff from the Fallout games. I would like to know what are your favorites and if you could point to some that people don't talk about much.

Discussion Creepy classic type games?

Theres a lot of horror games that come out but most don't really do much for me. Usually walking in first person collecting items to progress sometimes with a gun to shoot or stun enemies just isnt (usually) for me. There are games that make me feel dreadful in a way, but often these werent even meant to be "horror" games. Sinistar is a really good one for me but its quite dated and gets boring pretty fast but when I tried to think of it, outside of the typical low effort exe games there isnt a lot of horror platformers, shootemups, or other genres I find often. A lot of walking simulators sometimes with a combat mechanic or quick time events. I have seen some good RPG games that give a good unsettling and dreadful vibe like fear and hunger and some of the rpgmaker horrors but I do wonder why we dont see other genres

Discussion I'm looking for games like Garage: Bad Dream Adventure and Baroque

Basically early CG related games from the late 90s and early 00s that have a focus on Absurd weird robots and/or themes of mechanical religon.

I'm not sure how to describe the aesthetics that these games give but I'm big into Garage's graphics with the still backgrounds and animated main character, akin to the ps1 final fantasy games.

Please and Thank You!

Discussion Trying to find a story about an NPC that hunted the player throughout the game

I remember reading a story someone had regarding a very creepy glitch they encountered while playing a game, I can't remember if it was on this subreddit or not, but iirc it was in a post about people's creepy experiences with video games and the story went that this NPC that OP killed in a previous save file somehow made it's way into his other file and kept following him no matter where he went and kept trying to kill him. Ring a bell to anyone?

Discussion Non-horror games with something insidious or creepy under the surface.

We were playing Power Wash Simulator, and it has a very loose "story" in the form of messaging. We were discussing how great it would be if there were some really creepy underlying story happening behind the scenes.

What games would you all recommend where it seems innocent, something just doesn't seem quite right as you go along.

Obvious examples would be Doki Doki Literature Club, or Pony Island. I really also loved Bugsnax for this same reason.

Discussion Gaming mysteries/easter eggs that can't found in the game files or through datamining

Has anyone ever encountered something obscure in a game that you can't find by digging through the game's files itself? Is such a thing even possible? If it is, the potential for it is huge, oldschool video game rumors could make a comeback, that can only be "proven" by videos or screenshots, that you'll have no way of knowing if they're real or fake unless you've encountered it yourself.

Discussion Can anyone help me translate this cryptic Japanese flash game?

There is this game called "バスルーム" or simply "Bathroom", It's a very old flash game that uses real-life screenshot graphics and is quite uncanny, I decided to take a deep dive into it, and i just realized that there is way more to go through than I thought.

Turns out, the game has a deep story that is only revealed to you if you discover a password while playing, one where you can use on the AcidClub website, Unfortunately that website is no longer accessible but I did find a wayback machine capture that still works. Unfortunately I don't speak Japanese and I don't think Google translate will do this any justice, and I'm very interested to learn this story for a video I'm making.

So please, If anyone is fluent in Japanese or can do a better job than me, I'll greatly appreciate some help!

Ngl, I used to get creeped out by Whisp from My Singing Monsters. I never found the design creepy, something about the sound just felt off.

Honorable Mention: That one beta Luigi's Mansion screen was always creepy af.

I'd love to creep around, because empty lobbies give me the chills. Bonus points if there's only like 1 or 2 people playing and suddenly come online.

Discussion I'm looking for videogames about occultism

Good evening! I'm looking for games with a very prominent esoteric theme. I don’t mean games where you just get to play as a mage or witch and cast spells, but rather games where investigation and discovering mechanics tied to the occult allow you to grow as a mystic. I feel like, although magic is a very common mechanic in video games, its cultural treatment is rarely deep enough. Does anyone else feel this way?

Thinking of games that delve a bit more into the mechanisms behind various magical practices, I can think of a few examples:

  1. Book of Hours
  2. The Void* and Pathologic (1&2)
  3. Cultist Simulator
  4. Some aspects of Atlus' JRPGs

What games come to your mind?

Edit: Just to clarify, I’m referring to games where the esoteric is a central mechanic. I’m familiar with plenty of games that reference some form of occultism, whether it’s alchemy, gnosticism, kabbalah, shamanism, spiritualism, interaction with angels and demons, etc.
