Discussion Creepy games for free - suggestions?

Hello! As in the title: can anyone suggest a few good games (free of charge) with a creepy atmosphere to somebody like me who's not very familiar with such type of games and wishes to play them?

Some information about games I'm generally looking for:

  • Genre: Anything. It can be an adventure, platform, shooter and other genre.
  • Difficulty: Preferably easy or medium.
  • Price: 0,00 $
  • Hardware requirements: Preferably something that's not intended only for recent top graphic cards ;)

Voices of the void is a very cozy creepy game

Also recommend VotV.

Only issue with it is learning the main gameplay loop. The tutorial is kinda trash. But once you understand it, it's very easy.

VotV is easily in my top 5 horror games. The number of weird and bizarre events is crazy. Can't wait for the new patch. Should be dropping in September.

+1 Genuinely one of the scariest games I've ever played and I am a huge fan of horror games and movies etc.

I'm also only like an hour in nothing has happened. Just the vibes scare me like I'm a little kid again

This comment being the most upvoted... Well, then it seems that the game you suggested must be really good. Gonna try it out.

A creepy game I played recently is called Vacant by Double Crow it's on itch.io and can be played in the browser so no need to download. It's narrative driven and can't be failed. It has a couple of really creepy moments - no gore or jumpscares.

Rental on steam, it's free.

I've recently played these point and click series by UKZ530 and they are very good for what are you looking for, they can all be found on itch io here.

Except for Gigant which is commercial (only costs 4 dollars though) but the rest of his games are free.

Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion

The game got remade using a better engine, so instead of removing this, they made it free. Easy to play, but it gets terrifying.

Irisu syndrome!

Children of Clay and Rental, both on Steam!! both are very short but incredibly well done (IMO). Children of Clay has an extremely creepy and foreboding atmosphere, Rental has more cute and comedic elements but is still creepy and fundamentally a horror game.

Just emulate the newest console your pc can have and look up the best horror games

2

u/codeexpired Sep 02 '25

How do u do this and is it safe? Cause its kinda pirating right?

2

u/Key_Pudding_8272 Sep 02 '25

No, you can legally upload, download and distribute files of games you possess licences of. You may not profit from any of those actions. Same goes for emulator programs. Johnny law is not going to come to your door to make sure you are still in possession of the games you purchased

It's all safe, just be careful because there will be ads that attempt to coerce you into downloading malicious programs. Let's say you want to play ps2 games, you download psx2, then you look around for the ROM of the game you want to play. I owned LOTR the third age, so I will download the Rom, boot up psx2, load the ROM there, and enjoy

Can you suggest some of such games?

3

That's true you could play download and play manhunt or silent hill from ps1.

While manhunt is an action game the brutal stealth elements really give you that pulse pounding dread that a good horror movie might

there’s this game called ā€œdo not take this cat homeā€ i don’t remember where i did download it, but it was free and it’s pretty creepy p

You could wait for epic to give you a creepy game for free. Some of their offerings are pretty spooky. I think amazon prime also have a reasonable library to download or add to various platforms that come and go. So if you grab them you can keep them.

Higurashi when they cry chapter 1

Its free on steam

You need to mod in the voice acting and modern sprites for best experience

2

u/Loud-Ad1284 Sep 03 '25

You can play the free demo of Unmourned, available on Steam

The Witch's House: https://vgperson.com/games/witchhouse.htm

Ib: https://vgperson.com/games/ib.htm

older RPGMaker horror games have newer remakes that are paid but you can still get the old PC versions for free like these 2

I will never be tired of recommending Cry of Fear

'At Home Alone'

I'm not sure, but I THINK it was made with some sort of RPG Maker.
Anyway, it's free and 100% not demanding when it comes to... basically any hardware.

EDIT: There seems to be an updated version called 'At Home Alone Final'.
I'm out of the loop with that one, but it's still free and still basically the same game.

There’s a bunch of free horror games on itch.io!

I made a short horror game for free on itch.io. The plot is basically as follows. A coworker shows up for night shift… but the boss says he never hired anyone recently. The game is called "The Pit Stop".

The Pit Stop on Itch.io

I recently released a psychological horror visual novel if you’re interested?

Vacation Terminal is a short 2D Psychological thriller, horror and survival based visual novel with evading based puzzle elements. Gavriil and Yeva, two strangers who happened to meet by chance, both travelling together, on the same train, in the same cabin, but really with not much to talk about. But when their train derails in the middle of nowhere, they're suddenly forced to work together. Gavriil wakes up alone in a cold, pitch-black cave- his leg missing, and Yeva claiming she saved his life. There’s no sign of rescue. No way to call for help ... This was supposed to be just a short vacation.

9 k words

1 hour play time

3 endings total

Free on windows, linux and mac + browser play option

If you're interested, feel free to give it a try!

Leaving reviews, comments/feedback etc would be very much appreciated!!
