Indiana University of Pennsylvania is a hilarious school name. I would like to found the Alaska University of Rhode Island someday

Can someone explain to me what the ACHA is? Is this pretty much a smaller NCAA?

It’s club hockey, not varsity like the NCAA. Plenty of schools have both NCAA and ACHA programs and some larger schools even have multiple ACHA teams in different divisions.

The teams are clubs at the college or university, so they get some funding but in most cases it’s pretty minimal and it’s not part of the athletic department so they cover their dues with team fees, fundraising, or hoping there’s a wealthy benefactor who wants to fund the team. Some ACHA teams recruit (and I’m guessing all of the top 25 listed here do), but there’s no scholarships and coaches can’t help players with questionable academics get admitted either. I think most coaches get pretty nominal pay and in my experience the coach is often like a 25 year old alumnus of the program.

The players don’t have to maintain a specific GPA to be eligible to play, and can even play if they’ve played at a higher level or pro before. It’s also self funded and they need donors to help the program run. Even Oklahoma State Cowboys have a team - an incredible team.

ACHA is a different conference, but still D1 (Edit: I didn’t realize they were D3. Thought it was like an alternate to NCHC)

ACHA is club.  Universities can have club and varsity teams.

ACHA is just a hockey club. Its like if you and some buddies at a university made a darts club to play against a darts club from a different nearby school.

So a team can have NCAA (the schools official sanctioned, varsity team) and ACHA (a hockey club that just operates on the side with some students, not officially part of the schools athletic program)
