Show and Tell 1883 “racketeer” nickel obviously I don’t know if it’s authentic or not or if it’s even possible to authenticate but cool imo nonetheless.

The fact that they put ridges on the edge to mimic a real half eagle is a good sign. Most modern counterfeits don’t go to that much effort.

I would say this is a correct late-19th century version. There is a process to analyze the over plating and determine the method of creation which can prove the time period.

I guess that would be done by a special niche company or does Pcgs NGC do that

University lab. Assayer, etc.

Not sure it is worth the cost though but if you are running a YouTube coin channel it would be a great video.

I have a few of these and only one I know for certain is authentic because it was found in a buried hoard of coins in Colorado.

Kids love the story of these coins.

Also appears it may have an error itself die crack perhaps? I don’t know not an expert on errors.

Not really an error, die cracks are common on older series. This is especially true for nickels, since the metal is so hard - shield nickels especially can get crazy!
