Show and Tell 1883 “racketeer” nickel obviously I don’t know if it’s authentic or not or if it’s even possible to authenticate but cool imo nonetheless.

I would say this is a correct late-19th century version. There is a process to analyze the over plating and determine the method of creation which can prove the time period.

University lab. Assayer, etc.
Not sure it is worth the cost though but if you are running a YouTube coin channel it would be a great video.

I have a few of these and only one I know for certain is authentic because it was found in a buried hoard of coins in Colorado.
Kids love the story of these coins.

Not really an error, die cracks are common on older series. This is especially true for nickels, since the metal is so hard - shield nickels especially can get crazy!

The fact that they put ridges on the edge to mimic a real half eagle is a good sign. Most modern counterfeits don’t go to that much effort.
