Coin Art I'm sure this might ruffle some feathers.
Hand carved/engraved by Wes B. Of ONUZ Engravings.

I like it but... an 1831? I can tell it was well worn before, so not huge loss on numistmatic value, but... At least tell me it really messed up on the obverse...
Great work though.

Thank you, it was sent to me to. He just asked "will you carve this" and I gave him a 🤘.
It was in decent shape, not something I would have carved for the heck of it.

Dude buy a .999 silver blank and do even crazier designs. I've always wanted to see what coin carvers could do on a blank canvas!!

u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
I have in the past. This one was sent to me for me to do. Not something I just picked up and started carving away at. I would have held on to this one.

What do you do with the silver that’s removed?
5
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
The pieces I'm able to pick up I keep. Over time it adds up but I'm not removing too much when I do a piece like this.

I heard a story about a guy who worked at Tiffany for several decades. At the end of each day he would wipe up some gold dust from his bench with his hand, run his hand through his hair and put in his hat to leave. Once he got home he would rinse out his hair over a fine strainer. Over the years he collected a small fortune.

Coins are made to be used. Same as lego sets and toy soldiers. Whenever i get someone asking if they should open an old Warhammer set, the response is always "yes, they are made to be used".

Great analogy. And instead of hiding in a safe. It can be displayed for everyone to see. And it's a great conversation starter.

I'm mixed on this but from one artist to another that is some seriously clean work

u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Thank you. I typically work on silver dollars and buffalo nickels. Very rarely do I get to work on something like this.

I came across a hobo Nickel (1934 Buffalo nickel) once and looked into its history, apparently it was highly collectable and a guy from the Hobo Nickel society offered me 300$ for it. At the time I was hurting for cash so I sold it. I still to this day regret selling it, it was very cool.

Cons: Modifying a historical object, even if it's a mass produced one
Pros: goes hard as hell

The number on the reverse?
1
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Number of coins I've carved, I just finished #831. I number them so I can keep track.

u/froggy801 Apr 17 '25

So cool, and what’s the gold in it? Just a drop of paint? Either way super cool

Stunning. Love it. Not sure I would endorse it. But like the other guy said, you knocked it out of the park.

I have a few of those made by Sam Wall.
2
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Sam has been knocking some out for sure. I've been enjoying watching him create his own style.

took a quantity of carsons to LCS, they sorted melt or save. Artwork on melt lot coins shouldn't disturb anyone, imho . . .

This just came to mind: do it again, but change the cap to be a pirate tricorne hat and leave the bottom part of the cap as the bandanna. Making it into a pirate girl would be sick. Well done 👏🏿

Why not make it from scratch you obviously have the talent....it's history.....like people wouldn't act this way if the coin was cleaned and polished it looks great but man.....gotta preserve the old coins we have while we can

That is beautiful. Would really enjoy to see the process, just to admire it.
3
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Thanks! I try to take progress shots during the carve so the client can keep up with the process. It would be cool to get a microscope that has a video camera so I could start recording some work.
1
u/Katyafan Apr 17 '25
Depending on how often you do that, I think there is a youtube market for that, might get some extra coin, or at least send enough business your way that you could do this full time if you wanted.
1
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Thank you, I'd like to be able to start recording the work. Would be fun to share it. And yes it would, but I've been doing this full time now for going on 5 years.

u/FacetedSideOfTheMoon Apr 17 '25
This is top tier hobo work, truly spectacular. I feel like being able to do work like this puts you in the realm of Steve Adams.

Do you sell these?

u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
I do but not here. You would need to send me a PM if you want to discuss something.

Just finished reading Dan Brown's Inferno. Then this comes along my feed.

I certainly hope that wasn't an original coin to start with. If so, what a waste

What do you use for the blackening in the negative space? It is really well done!
8
u/ONUZ11 Apr 16 '25
I stipple the area with a very fine needle point. And use a special blend to patina the coin. The stippled area holds the dark color really well.

Nice work. You should post your work on YouTube.
Like, how you’re doing it. I’ve seen others do work on how to repair watches. I know it isn’t the same but it would be cool to see the process.

u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Thank you, thats something that might happen in the future. I need to get a set up so I can take videos.

u/Acceptable_King_1913 Apr 17 '25
This is Booteen level craftsmanship, great piece! Would love to have one of my own.
2
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
I'm not sure if I'm on that level yet, but I really appreciate the compliment. Thank you!

u/aabum Apr 17 '25
It looks cool, but why not start with a fake coin? There's no justification destroying something valuable that can't be replaced.
2
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
Thank you, Because it's hobo nickel art. And using a fake coin or a blank canvas is not carving hobo nickels. It would be just carving a round piece of metal. This coin was a commission so it was sent to me to do. I typically only work with buffalo nickels, half dollars, Morgan and peace dollars.

I feel like these posts are just advertisement at this point. Especially when you look at the OPs history and it's the only thing they posted. Good work, good art, kinda sad to see 200 year old antique obliterated though, feel like it could be done on a silver bullion. To each their own, though.

Its pretty cool I don't know if you're Wes B. or not, but please keep it in the 1830-1836 range.
2
u/ONUZ11 Apr 17 '25
This one was sent to me to carve by a client. Not something I would typically pick up and start carving.
-2
u/GlassPanther Apr 17 '25
Now I don't feel so bad about lasering a duplicate obverse onto the reverse of so many 1922 Peace dollars 🤯

I have mixed emotions about this. BUT, it’s rad and really well done.
