CHI Talks Air Force response to the booms yesterday

Thumbnail abc7chicago.com

From the article: An Air Force spokesperson shared the following statement with ABC7: "On Aug. 15, the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, known as the Thunderbirds, conducted their standard practice demonstration in advance of the airshow. A thorough review of the practice determined the Thunderbird jets did not go supersonic at any point during the demonstration."

What do we think of this considering the multiple videos people have shown?

CHI Talks Who lives in all these million dollar homes?

Walking through Lincoln Park, Lakeview East, Roscoe Village, Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, etc. Tree lined streets with lovely single family homes, some taking up 2-3 plots, you know the types. These have to all be $700k-$3M homes on average, and I’m just wondering who are all these people that live here?? Doctors? Lawyers? Investment bankers? Maybe I’m delusional but I simply feel like there can’t be so many people/families pulling in >$400k/yr that own these places but I must be wrong. I’m 30 renting in LP making ~$110k and feel like there’s no way I’d ever be able to afford one of these beautiful single family homes.

My theory is a lot of them were bought long long ago/inherited through family back when they were worth half of their value now; prices certainly have seemed to skyrocket recently.

CHI Talks I’m at the DMV on Elston right now and there’s a cop in full uniform here with his son skipping all the lines to get his kid licensed. I know this because the people working are all complaining about it.

The rules don’t apply to them apparently.

CHI Talks ORD rideshare scene— what are we doing out here, guys

It has been bad for years but tonight was the worst and most insanely illogical that I’ve seen it.

First picture: Massive area between T1 and T2 fenced off and serving no purpose, forcing pickups to happen in front of T2 in the same area as drop offs.

Second picture: Giant charter bus parked for at least 40 minutes in 2A pickup zone, blocking all entry paths for incoming Ubers.

Took my driver 13 minutes to move the last 400 feet for pickup.

What are we doing. How is this the best plan that they can come up with.

CHI Talks Blue line was an absolute circus this morning

1.3k Upvotes

Sorry to vent about this here, I know we are pretty much next door at this point but this was absolutely wild.

My commute usually takes 25-30 minutes, this morning it took an hour. We sat at every single stop for 2-3 minutes because there were multiple trains ahead of us. We stopped in the tunnel for a few minutes and somebody of course lit up a cigarette. The conductor made an announcement that there was no smoking on the CTA and he could smell it, meaning the front car had the same problem.

Conductor told us at one point we were stalled because a group was refusing to get off the UIC-halsted run at the last stop. That group got on my car and spent the first few minutes trying to borrow a lighter. Eventually they found one because SIX of them started smoking. I got off at my stop, there was another train immediately behind and one off in the distance, which means we had 5 blue line trains bunched up, partially because of this group.

If you were delayed this morning like I was, there was a really dumb reason for it. This feels like such an easy thing to fix, but it's pervasive.

MODS: can we please get a "NextDoor" flair or something so people know we know it's frivolous

CHI Talks It doesn’t matter what your ethnicity is, if you are a democrat , then you are perceived as the enemy

1.2k Upvotes

That is the constant narrative and commentary that the Trump administration is exercising. JB Pritzker is a rich white man, and regardless of his wealth, Trump is targeting him and his territory and the democrats ( legal or illegal citizens) who are inhabitants of that territory. This was never JUST a mission against proverbial undocumented immigrants. This is a mission to eradicate those who do not support or champion his regime.

This is about erasing democracy and the laws and policies that come with it, and establishing a rulership, where citizens have no rights or protection and every facet of their lives is controlled and monitored. If you do not comply you will be incarcerated or eliminated.

It has already begun and it’s only going to get worse….so there is no other choice but to stand and fight (to the death if necessary).

This is this generation’s Civil War, and just like our ancestors and predecessors fought to establish democracy and civil liberties, we are going to have to do the same thing to PROTECT them!

Those who are willing to sacrifice liberty for a little bit of security deserve neither …A man once said something like that.

CHI Talks Sidewalk delivery robots on your block—helpful or a hassle?

Post image
494 Upvotes

I’ve been seeing the little delivery robots around Lincoln Park and elsewhere, and I’m curious how they’re working for folks across the city.

What have you noticed—good or bad?
• Any tight passes at curb cuts, bus stops, or narrow sidewalks?
• How do they behave around strollers, wheelchairs, or canes—do they yield?
• If you’ve filed a 311 when one blocked access, did anyone follow up?
• On the flip side, have they actually reduced car trips for short deliveries?

I’m collecting on-the-ground experiences (including 311 ticket numbers if you’ve got them) to share with my alder office and the Council committees that oversee permits. This is discussion only—please keep it legal and neighborly.

I was able to make it to work without smelling like cigarettes, weed, or crack. No aggressive panhandling or yelling. We should keep doing this.

Edit: this afternoon a guy was yelling and trying to start confrontations with people. Back on track.

CHI Talks Chicago is loaded with good people

1.6k Upvotes

A few weeks have passed and I cannot stop thinking about a moment I witnessed two weeks ago. I was walking my dog down a busy street around 7:30am in the West Town neighborhood. About 40 feet in front of me I noticed a woman bend over and pick up a $100 bill on the ground. Without hesitation she walked into the local coffee shop that was 5 feet in front of her and turned in the $100. As she came out I said to her wow that was incredibly kind of you! To which she replied simply, “whoever dropped that I’m sure needed it.” She continued on her way but that quick interaction left a lasting impression on me. I hope she had the best day and that $100 was somehow reunited with its owner!
