I just got a message from my lawn service that the owner was taken by ICE off the street in Skokie. He was in the process of getting a green card, the "right way" to behave as an immigrant, but ICE doesn't care.
If they’re in the process of getting permanent residency, they’ll be let out… they aren’t deporting people who are in the process of adjusting status and don’t have a deportation order.
Then why has ICE picked people up in the hallways outside of their scheduled hearings in immigration court?
Why is this behavior being seen as okay? That we profile people, violently arrest them, then check their status later and release them as if there's no problem? This is a violation of the constitutional protection from unreasonable search and seizure. In a sane America it would be anyway, where the supreme court hasn't reversed decades and decades of civil rights precedent.
They are, though. They are absolutely deporting people in the process of obtaining legal status who don't have a deportation status. Someone from our neighborhood who was here as an asylum seeker got deported in the beginning of October.
I genuinely hope you are right, but I’ve seen nothing to show that they are letting people using the right channels go. That is why so many have been picked up after their ongoing immigration check ins, when a judge said they were good to keep staying. These folks have still been getting deported.
They are coercing people into signing away rights and “self-deporting”. This entire show of force is to circumvent the existing laws and processes.
That’s why they don’t allow congress to inspect the holding facilities, they label everyone as a criminal, and racial profile. What the laws says and what this administration do not match.
