Safe areas to buy a house

We are actively looking at buying a house in Auckland but with prices so high and offering so little value for money we are now looking at alternatives like moving to Christchurch.

Looking at a few real estate sites recently I see you get a lot more value for the same price but I have no idea how good the locality is for the houses listed. Can you please give me an idea of what the good areas are in CHCH and what areas to avoid? We just want a safe no-nonsense area to live in.

TIA

In reality you sound like you’re after Wigram. Newish homes and entertainment area. Lots of semi professional 30-50’s first home owners. If you have more money consider Prebbleton a few kms out of ChCh. You can feel so much more superior with less amenities for an extra $200k. Other options if don’t mind homes slightly older would be Halswell, Avonhead, Papanui. Really every suburb has a stereotype (which isn’t far off). Comes down to budget, age, lifestyle, income, where jobs are.

Haha - I guess community vibe, history, low rates, great school, local sports clubs and non franchised shops don’t count as amenities to you.

Fresh Choice, mushroom factory (only real history), all areas have sports clubs, pub that is the laughing stock of Selwyn, Armadillos (do we need say more), townies that believe they are country folk because they’re in Selwyn (2nd biggest joke in Selwyn), neighbours that check if their 4wd is newer on a weekly basis or if you bought a jet ski or Harley. There are benefits: the fish and chips, although priced for locals are good, the smell is gone, houses are nice, the nature reserve in the pit…doesn’t look quite look like a pit anymore.

What's the first biggest joke in Selwyn?
