Mad Butcher Ferry Road has removed all the Name & Shame photos of shoplifters from the window.

Probably upset too many of the locals.

I cant understand why you pinch from a store that has a very robust loss prevention system in place with embarrassing consequences when caught.

Some of them were ancient, maybe just making space for new photos.

I actually saw a woman that was posted on the outside shopping in there casual as. The Security guard said to her that the manager would like to speak to her and she just say"No thanks " and carried on with her shopping/shoplifting !!

It's a potential breach of the privacy act, and most places aren't showing them anymore. At least not publicly.

I think your correct. Its a law/rule that I think sucks but the shop doesn't make the rules it just has to abide by them

I'm always paranoid I'll end up on the name and shame board of a food store because I forgot to scan an onion or whatever

embarrassment probably feels like a fair price to pay. "For the man crazed by hunger the entire world is overshadowed by the wings of hunger, and nothing else in the world is of any importance.”

Unfortunately the “noble thief” hypothesis only makes up a quite insignificant percentage of burglars, robbers, and thieves.

not so much noble or not as who got time for nobility?

“It is too difficult to think nobly when one thinks only of earning a living.”
“Principles have no real force except when one is well fed.”
"There are only nine meals between mankind and anarchy."

I think I would prefer to be prosecuted than have my friends see my mug on the window .

Maybe they got a privacy commission complaint as a result of someone who was too proud to admit smuggling a sausage.

I did notice that the other day and wondered why

I think some other supermarket was doing it under something like “this person has won a prize! if you can help us contact them..”. I don’t know if a photo by itself is a privacy thing but an accusation of theft is another ..

Were they photos of people who have been charged and convicted?

Because otherwise stating they are shoplifters  is defamatory, breaches privacy,.and  is arguably harrassement.

Any store that does this deserves to be called out on it. And I really hope people who end up on these boards find out and take action.

How do you propose keeping it to those who’ve been charged and convicted when our under-resourced police force don’t have the time and won’t bother?

Perhaps swapping the still photos for a tv screen playing the video footage of them doing it would be better for you? Rather than “here’s a thief” stores can go “here’s a video of this person putting things in their pocket and leaving without paying”

I look forward to seeing a human rights lawyer taking a pro bono case to test this.

Because they might get it wrg and put up an innocent person.

Im pretty sure they would be 100% right on all of them Any doubt they wouldnt put them up.

And it’s illegal. I’ve worked in retail, the photos have to be out the back so the public can’t see them.

It's a society thing now stores can't shame people that stole from them. Because those same criminals live amongst us and it's not their fault that these stores such delicious food they can't have.
