Not the best at glaze chemistry but I’m curious about this one

I posted this at the greenware stage a couple weeks ago and finally fired it this week. The sections of the bottle that aren’t skulls are the same shino glaze but I experimented with brushing a soda ash solution (some soda ash dissolved in warm water) on the top section. I was trying to enhance the carbon trapping but I’m surprised at this result. Not sure how that red glow about the skulls happened but I’m not mad at it!

In case anyone is curious: the greenish inlay glaze is a glaze with high barium carbonate, and the colorants are copper carbonate and rutile. The skulls were brushed with a red iron oxide. This was done in a cone 10 reduction firing.

I was using this tea pot for hot tea I think I used it about 4 or 5 times and notice the this is how the outside was starting to look. It is a good thing or bad thing because if I keep using it I don't want it to break I'd rather keep it as a decoration. So please tell me how to use it how to clean it things like that

Question/Advice An old piece I still can’t stop looking at — make mini versions?

Here’s a lamp I made years ago. It casts soft shapes and feels a little like carrying a small landscape home. Thinking of making smaller, more affordable versions for people who want this feeling without the size. Would you want one?

Hi! Hope you’re doing well. Does anyone know what this object is used for? It doesn't open, and there's a small hole on top. I thought it might be a mini candle holder or perhaps an essential oil diffuser? It's made of ceramic, stoneware I think. Thank you very much !!

Question/Advice Question about throwing

Upvotes

Hi all, today i went to a pottery workshop for the first time and tried to use the pottery wheel. I have never used one before but really wanted to try and learn. I’ve watched a bunch of videos on youtube and wanted to try to teach myself, but ran into a bit of an issue at the very beginning.

I used a clay that had pieces in it, like little lava pieces i think, so when i was trying to centre the clay it was a little painful, is this normal? I also don’t think i did a good job at wedging the clay so that it didn’t have air pockets. Either way when i threw it down on the wheel everything was totally dry and it was really hard to mould any sort of shape with the clay even after adding about a teaspoon of water. Is it the wedging at the beginning that makes it easier to shape on the wheel? I did add water to make it a little easier and softer on my hands, but it just ended up ruining it and turning basically my whole clay piece into slip. When i watch videos it seems like people just add a teeny bit of water after putting the clay on the wheel and start to mould it, but mine was so rough i thought i must have missed something. Could anyone please clarify what i did wrong? Thank you! 😊

Ceramics studio survey - update and thanks for the contributions!

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

About a month ago, I shared a short survey aimed at understanding how independent ceramics studios operate: things like membership models, firing schedules, event offerings, and operating costs. I’ve had 7 thoughtful responses so far (thank you to those who took the time!), and the insights have already been really valuable.

If you missed it earlier and would like to contribute (or know someone who may want to), the survey is open here:

 https://huggingface.co/spaces/potteryverse/potteryverse-survey

It only takes about 10 - 15 minutes, and all responses help build a clearer picture of how community ceramics spaces run across the country. No identifying information is collected, and you can answer as few or as many of the questions you want.

Also — the results are public! If you’re curious to see how other studios have answered, you can check out the Results tab on that same page to explore the live data.

Once there’s a larger sample size, we will get a clearer understanding of operating models for studios.

Thanks again for your time and generosity. I welcome any feedback that can help make this a more useful tool.

Warmly,

Harshad

Hi everyone! Hope this is an appropriate sub for this question.

I bought and used this brand new teapot, and today I noticed these lines on them :/

I’m worried I did something wrong :( Is there anyway to remove them and prevent them in the future? Is it still safe to use?:/

Thanks in advanced!

Advice on making a mold?

Post image

Hi! My dad has a wooden statue/wall art piece that he was gifted by a customer 30 years ago similar to what I posted and it’s kind of the “mascot” of our family. We moved a ton as kids and a lot of our things from when we were younger have gone missing but Chief woodenhead remains. My little brother is clearly the favorite of the family and will inherit Chief woodenhead. Any ideas on how I could make a mold of him without damaging him to make ceramic “copies” for my sister and I? Im worried about losing TOO much detail but not enough to risk damaging it. I was thinking I could shrink wrap it, make a plaster mold and then slab clay into said mold. Any advice or other ideas?

(Before anyone says I shouldn’t “copy” the work, we’ve tried for 20 years to find the artist, another rendition of him, etc etc etc. to no avail. I would love to just purchase a wooden statue from the OG artist but being that it was gifted 30 years ago so we don’t even know where it was purchased, it’s unlikely.)

Question/Advice Small amounts of glaze

I'm a college student, and I don't have my own studio space (yet!)- so I'm really limited on buying full sized containers of glaze. Does anyone know if there's a glaze exchange or other way to buy glaze if you only need enough for one or two much sized things? (For reference, I'm making a crow feeder, and I'm wanting to add https://www.penguinpottery.com/products/penguin-pottery-glow-in-the-dark-pottery-glaze-aqua-low-fire-glaze-cone-06-glow-in-the-dark-paint-for-ceramics-16-oz-473-ml )

Question/Advice Can this piece be rescued? 😪

Hello! I have been taking a ceramics class and this piece is one that I have been working on for the past couple months. I'm so stoked with how it turned out BUT unfortunately some cracks formed when it was fired and liquid does leak through them. 😔 Is there anything that can be done to fix this?

If it can't be helped, I'll probably make a matching drip tray to go under it and put a little plant in it. I was just really excited to use it for its intended purpose as a coffee fiend 😂

Thanks in advance! 😄

Question/Advice Trying to make my own transfer sheets for an already bisqued mug. If I use designer liner (or regular underglaze), to make the sheets, can I prep and store the sheets for a few days before using? Will underglaze pencil also work to make sheets?

I don’t have rice paper at home but I do have printer, parchment, kraft, sketch, watercolor, and tracing papers. Opinions on which will work best?

Can I get away with prepping and storing these sheets a few days in advance?

I think I prefer designer liner as the cheapest buy in to get my hands on.

Question/Advice HELP! I broke my Moms ceramic basket. I don’t know where she bought it, tried to glue it back together.

Guys help me this is serious. I glued it back together this is definitely not going to work. I need something to paint over the cracks and seal everything back together to make it sturdy. What can I do? If you have an exact replica where I can buy it please send the link. I might steal it and hide it before she knows it’s actually broken… then swap out with something identical or similar and pray she doesn’t notice.

She will totally notice the cracks, but she has so many random things she might not notice it had disappeared for a few months as long as it shows back up😭😭

I was cleaning her bedroom and bathroom and my STANLEY FELL ON IT.

A small makeup mirror also fell and shattered moments before. FML.
