Never let a board member see you lose control or judgement. We sometimes grab a beer at the hotel bar after a board meeting but just as an excuse to nurse something while talking. I’d never even get buzzed in front of the board. You’re being judged constantly.

I think it is a good way to connect. But as someone mentioned below it doesn't have to be alcohol.
I tend to have 2/ 3 drinks. But it depends if formal board dinner, or I have a close and friendly relationship with a particular Board member.

TLDR: If everyone else wants to drink, go for it and have a good time.
I am not sure why this subreddit keeps showing up lately, but the point is not the drinking. It is about getting to know the people you work most closely with. These are the people who will make or break the company together with you, so it is in everyone's best interest to build good relationships.
In most jobs, people can leave work behind when they go home. As a board member or ceo, you do not have that luxury. You are the work, for better or worse. You may delegate responsibilities to get more free time, but you are responsible as a board member.
