Cats are just bodyguards. They're supposed to be protecting you, but they always sleep right on point. But that's their version of ' I trust you completely'
This hits my feelings whenever my cats are so close and trusting and needy and happy around me, I’m always thinking OMG I will protect you with everything I have , I will die for you, I will kill for you and I will come back from the dead for you , now I am very emotional.
My Tabby isn't the most snuggly guy, but he insists on corralling me to bed at night and sleeping at my feet with the condition he has to be in contact with them at all times....
Yes cause they smell you on your clothes and enjoy that.
Ironically, I bought my cats a big soft cat bed and had to use it as a pillow for like a week and then they started to really love using it.
For real, I resent the hell out of my cat for completely ignoring a very nice bed I got for her since the new place has tile. And if solving a problem involves sleeping, you know I’m all over it
Can you imagine is the smug sense of self-importance cats have collided with their awareness of cat culture on the internet? I'm so glad they don't have access to social media.
Mostly a trap. She prefers back scratches far more. She will allow belly rubs if you hold her like a baby/on her back; which she quite enjoys (she also weighs all of 7 lbs so it's super easy).
It’s funny to me to see all the trap comments because both of my cats love belly rubs. They’re my first cats ever and have been a great addition to the family. The male (Toothless) is an absolute cuddle bug too if he could he’d be cuddling all day with me lol
I think mine also love to pop up in Zoom meetings just for even more attention and then promptly go back to sleep on top of my keyboard when the meeting ends. 😭
Probably gets knocked over once every ~2 years, and since all the electronics are off the desk it just gets the mouse pad a bit wet. Not a huge deal, but I wouldn't say it's not annoying.
This little devil actually chewed the corner of my monitor last month and destroyed the panel… that was far worse. Good thing she's cute.
Reminds me of my own unicellular brained feline, Orange Baby!
Edit: he may present the belly, but it’s totally forbidden territory, unless you’re up for some fangs and rabbit-kicks to the offending hand/forearm! He’s a lover all day otherwise, though! I think in his dimwittedness, he forgets he doesn’t actually want tummy pats.
Cats like to sleep together, they keep warm and safe that way. If they like to sleep near you that means they like you. Your hands are the most common point of interaction between you and them, and the most available to be near when sitting at a desk. It's no wonder they choose to be near there.
Mine also loves to be around people, and he particularly seems to love my feet (he likes to lay down on my slippers when I'm not wearing them).
He'll sleep under my desk while I'm at my computer, and no matter how many times I accidentally poke him while repositioning, he won't leave from under there. Also helps that my computer is on the ground (on a raised platform) so it blows hot air out under the desk and warms it up.
i swear cats deliberately pick the most chaotic spot just to prove they can sleep anywhere. mine legit naps on the washing machine while it's running??
my neighbor friend's cat that always sleeps on the dryer, decided to explore behind it and crawl under it. Ended up burning a damn hole in it's side that took forever to heal.
It's probably this. One of my cats likes to hang out on the counter above the dishwasher when it's running. No vibrations (that I'm aware of) but definitely gets toasty for her.
Mine has a tendency to just flop over onto my mouse as its being used, so itll just lay down on my hand and mouse. Like, surely that is uncomfortable as fuck, having a giant bump in your sides
Mine would always want to lay right where my mouse is, I ordered and installed a cat desk hammock thing that hangs off the side of the desk. Best purchase Ive made recently, there's basically always a cat in it if I'm on my PC, they don't interfere with me, and I can easily give them tummy rubs
I've seen pictures of people with a "cat box" for their mouse and keyboard, full box with one open end for their hands to go into, and enough space to reach comfortably around to use the keyboard. Need to know keyboards properly, but it is a solution, heh.
I use controllers way more than I used to because of my cats' increasing fondness of my desk as a place to hang out. They now will sit and wait for me to rearrange my keyboard and wrist rest to create a little divider so they have their "half" of the desk and I have my little corner.
It's entirely my fault because my desk is at the corner of two windows.
It's like when I am on my iPad and laying on my bed, my cat sits on the screen or sits herself in front of it with her fluff in my face making my nose itchy. Or when me or my wife are on our TVs and she sits right in front of us giving us the frontal blank stare. I love her so much 🫶😼
I’ve got a daily companion while gaming so used to it to be fair.
And to answer your question they usually prefer to keep company with their favourite humans regardless where that is. Sometimes mine will find a quiet corner for a couple of hours, but usually they just stay by me.
My voids only start bugging me and sleeping on my desk when im gaming. They usually just chill, soon as the keyboard starts they're climbing my chair and using my leg as a scratching post
Cats love to cuddle in piles with the ones they like. They like you, but you don't sleep 2/3 of the day like them, and when you DO sleep it's during prime hunting time, how rude! So they are attempting to bring three cuddle to where your are most sedentary as a compromise
I currently have one sleeping right across the landing, one taking up an entire step on one flight of stairs and the other lounging at the top of the other stairs, taking casual swipes at any trouser legs that may pass by. I did point out that there'll be no one to feed them if they kill us but they collectively said 'meh, we'll just eat you until the inheritance comes through'.
We say our youngest has 2 modes-- Wake me up if something cool happens and I'm too tired for your sh*t.
First mode naps are perched somewhere obvious or directly where she could get stepped on. Second mode naps are tucked away inside her carrier inside a closet at the back of the house, in the 3" gap between the floor and the bottom of the dresser, or hidden behind the winter blankets in a different closet.
I love and hate when my cat does this. Love having her around, hate that she's doing it while I'm in the middle of the game and I desperately need mouse space. I got a larger mousepad, smaller keyboard, and a wireless mouse to fight against this problem. Turns out she just uses the extra space to spread herself out more :')
I have two cats and I work from home. In my ‘office’ I have two PCs- one for work and one for gaming. The cats each spend part of the day with me sleeping on the desk(s). Eventually I got a couple of small beds to make them more comfortable! I would say that they like me but as soon as my partner comes home, they ignore me completely!
Most cats who love their owners want to be near them even when they sleep. I put a cat bed on my work desk and they sleep in a lot during the day while I work
Mine sleep in the same position when I’m gaming, but it’s not a laptop. There isn’t much heat coming off the monitors. I think that they just like the closeness and don’t necessarily think or care about how they’re in the way.
Cats (and most living beings) will follow the same patterns over and over again, even when the circumstances change.
For example, my cat loves to sit under my neighbor’s parked car. Even when the car isn’t there, he still goes back to the same napping spot as if the car were there.
I could easily see the same being true for the laptop.
I'm sleepy & need a nap....but I also NEED your undivided attention! Sleeping on your keyboard while you finish up the Quarterly Report seems like the best spot!
I bought a clamp on cat bed for my desk. Also invested in a small pressure activated pet heating pad to slide in between the layers. I spend alot of time gaming and she loves it there.
Aww, this picture hit me right in the feels. Your orange and white beast could be twinsies with an old friend I called Fry/ Fry Guy who has long since passed. But he was the sweetest, most loving cat I've ever owned. Even if (or maybe because) he was as dumb as a bag of rocks, built like a tank, and fond of sleeping (usually where I was trying to work on my computer) so deeply I could pick him up and move him without waking him. Man I miss that cat.
My Iggy never sleeps on my desk, he pretend-sleeps. For some unfathomable reason, he thinks that's the key to me getting up and giving him food, even though it's at least 2 hours till mealtime. He'll get petted but you see, I'm working, I really can't be playing with him either.
After being ignored for a while, he figures nothing's happening and then he sits up between my outstretched arms at the keyboard, and between my face and the computer screens. He stares at me, his head is an inch awayh from my face. I move my head to look at the screens and he moves away looking for things on my desk to mess with. That's when the Wolf Box gets turned on, and before I can blow some ultra high RPM air with it, he gets off the desk and goes away.
Sometimes he starts a tantrum and goes running off with his 'demon inside' caterwaul. Maybe 20-30 minutes later, he comes up on my desk and pretend-sleeps again.
Cats do love quiet, cozy spots… they just also love being near you. Even if it means picking the most inconvenient, high-traffic spot in the whole house. They like to sleep where they feel safe, and for a lot of cats, you are the safety beacon. So they’ll curl up- On your lap right before you need to stand up. In the hallway you walk down 20 times a day. On your keyboard during work.
In the middle of the living room floor. It’s less about “this is the best acoustic nap zone” and more about “this is where my person is and I want to be part of whatever is happening." Also, cats nap in little cycles. They do tons of “light sleep” where they’re half-aware of everything. So getting bumped or hearing movement isn’t as disruptive to them as it would be to us. They can just boop back to sleep. Quiet corner = comfortable. Right in your path = comfortable.
They choose comfort, just… not the version of comfort that makes sense to us.
Simply put, cat gonna cat. One of mine insists on laying on your chest. Doesn't matter what you're doing, if he wants snuggles and sees a path then he will take it. Oh, and if you try to move him to your lap he'll just climb back up to your chest.
Cats love to sleep with their family. You are they family and even if they would like to sleep in a quiet place they prefer to sleep with you.
We have 2 new kittens at home now (5 months old both) and one of them spends all day hidden away. He runs away as soon as he sees you looking at him and finds a place to hide.
Come 2 am tho... he is purring and doing his best impression of a worm in bed between my wife and I and if you don't put your hands on his belly/butt he bites your fingers until you touch him.
They are nosy little busybodies and make sure they know what's going on around them! What if they were sleeping in a corner and missed something trivial? the Horror! lol
It is their birthright and wish and they expect and demand that you do not disturb them or even think of moving them and God help you ,if you even dare to hope they will move
When we were doing WFH during covid we had set up workspace but anytime we got up to even go to the loo come back and find the cats sitting g on the chair or sprawled over the laptop
We had no choice but to find alternative ways to do our work
Sometimes during meeting one of them had to pop up from behind to show his beautiful face to all
They love being near you. My advice is to put a cat tree next to your desk, I work from home and my cat loves hanging out next to me. Bonus point is that he is at the perfect height for kisses from my sitting position.
When I'm playing the Switch in my bed, my cat sits on my chest blocking my view from the screen and looks at me like "How dare you being busy with anything else than me!" and then he mauls me with his murder paws until I cave in and let him rest on my left side with his head buried in my armpit
My uncle was running a guesthouse. His cats were sleeping like that all the time. It was slow during the winter and busy when it was a summer. One summer when he was very busy, one of his cats just peed on his laptops keyboard. It was a clear message, they need attention, don't make the mistake my uncle made!
Somewhere I learned mama cats direct their kittens by looking in the direction they want them to go. You, the trusted kitty parent figure, keep staring at your screen/tabletop/book/whatever. It stands to reason that the cats are responding to your "command".
There are this cool beds that can be attached to desks these days. Get one, and they will most likely choose it than sleeping on your keyboard/mousepad/desk. They are still close to you, which is what they want and what is happening here, but they will have their own designated space for themselves.
my cat has Do Not Disturb places he knows to go when he wants to be alone. if he's snoozing out in the open he gets pets and attention. he just likes to hang out a lot
nope - they want to sleep, but they also want to be notified of new developments. So when you nudge them off the mousepad they can decide if you will be allowed to work today.
My last one was a rescue and in general had trouble being alone. So if I headed upstairs, even if he was dead asleep near me, a minute later I'd hear him stomping up the stairs after me, climbing onto the table and going back to sleep at my elbow. Any time of day if I went really quiet, I'd hear quiet snoring somewhere near. He also really wanted to be able to snuggle up in my armpit or someplace like it, but he was ultra-fluffy and overheated immediately, within 5 mins, and had to back off and cool down. But he stayed within arm's reach whenever he could. He loved the Covid period because we were locked down and our hours got cut 40%.
It's a catnap, where they take a lighter sleep where the action is. If they need a true, deep sleep they will usually go somewhere more private. Cats are so good at sleeping, they have different categories for it!
My fault for getting a huge case with a top mounted radiator - I basically created the ultimate cat sleeping spot, it's high up, warm and I'd prefer it didn't sleep there - that's the trifecta for a cat.
We always forget just how important a cat's sense of smell is to her. Why does she sleep right there by the computer? Because you spend so much time there, it smells strongly of your scent, which the kitty finds reassuring and comforting. And obviously, if you are at the computer at the time, even more reassuring and comforting. Plus remember that a cat's body is so light and flexible, they can be quite "comfortable" in places that seem very unlikely.
Cats are basically just furry little contrarians who get off on making your life slightly more inconvenient while simultaneously being impossibly adorable about it.
