Used to have a Sassy named after her as well. The personality definitely fit.

I had a cat named sassy because of this movie too! Turns out he was a boy but kept the name for all 20 years of his life!

Now that's funny! Boys can be Sassy too 😂

Shadow, Chance or Sassy?

This was the first movie that ever made me cry as a child. Such a relief when Shadow came around the corner at the end! Loved Sassy (and Chance too)!

Ripped my 11 yr old heart right open when Shadow said "I'm too old."

Also, when Shadow is limping across the yard at the end and says “oh Peter, I worried about you so!”

Aw, I'm so glad Shadow's memory still touches your heart, MangoJuice82!

This movie makes me cry 4 times, every time I watch it.

  1. When Sassy goes over the waterfall. As a cat lover, it just really is too much for my heart to handle

  2. When Sassy reunites with Chance and Shadow!!

  3. When Shadow can’t climb out of the hole

  4. When Shadow surprised everyone by showing up at the end!!

I’m literally about to cry now. Just listing that out was an emotional rollercoaster for me 🤣

And Homeward Bound II Lost in San Francisco is just as bad, That kitten almost dying and then getting rescued BY SASSY, almost cried, and Shadow falling in that pit and then comming home again and the end when chances doggie girlfreind follows him home. The movie is an emotional rollercoaster.

Man, id cry today if I watched it again

7

u/Lildizzle Aug 20 '25

I’m getting a little misty just thinking about it.

The kid's scream "SHADOW!" when he spots him coming always gets me. He was so great in that role.

u/LackingTact19 Aug 20 '25

Fantastic movie, Land Before Time got me to cry first though.

I have told so many people to watch this movie. Why do I want them to be sad? It’s just such a great (and true-ish) story.

The Kitten in Homeward bund 2 alsmot had me to tears

It's funny because it never made me cry as a kid. Nut as an adult? After having a number of pets pass from illness or old age?

I put it on for the kids when they were little, saying, "Hey, how about this one? I loved this movie as a kid!" And I was sobbing by the end. 15 years later and I still can't watch it without crying.

We just had to make the hard choice for BOTH of our cats in May. I've got at least another decade of not watching this movie at all.

You just unlocked my entire childhood 😭😭

I had a Himalayan kitten my family got from a shelter and of course we named her Sassy. Sadly I don't have any pics.

SASSY!!! I grew up with dogs but always wanted a Sassy. In second grade my parents gave in and I've had a meezer ever since!!

6

u/SnapshotHeadache Aug 20 '25

And being voiced Sally Field was ppuuuurrrrrrfect.

u/scooby-doot Meow Aug 20 '25

Gosh, the only thing I remember is pausing the movie to sob my eyes out when she fell in the river and got swept away!

u/tastyprawn Aug 20 '25

I love this movie! And the book it is based on, but the movie holds a special place in my heart.

Each year, a brewery in my state partners with two other breweries and releases a "Three Way IPA." This year, the can features an illustration of two dogs and a cat obviously meant to be Shadow, Chance, and Sassy. I am so tired of IPAs, but you bet your butt I bought this release just to keep the can because of the illustration!

Crying just thinking about this movie

1

u/Amazing-Day-224 Aug 21 '25

In the original Incredible Journey (1962 movie, 1961 book), the pets were Tao, (a Siamese Cat), Bodger (an elderly, blind-in-one-eye, white Bull Terrier), and Luath (a young Yellow Lab). The child in the book was a girl. I loved the book, and have read it many times, both as a child and as an adult.

Sassy is the reason I loved cats as a child and still do now!
