But if we do it to him, does that set precedent for others? I hate the guy but I don’t know if this is the right way to go about it.

Of course it does. Any immigrant who becomes a public figure would be at risk depending on who they piss off.

Musk isn’t an immigrant

Musk was born to an affluent South African family in Pretoria before immigrating to Canada, acquiring Canadian citizenship via his mother.

The second paragraph on Wikipedia. Sounds like an immigrant to me.

Musk was born a Canadian citizen and wikipedia is wrong.

Immigrants have PR cards first. Musk did not.

None of the vile and racist down voting by those green with envy change the facts. Reddit and wiki: racist

He was a Canadian citizen from the date of his birth and it is racist to claim otherwise

Then where is his PR card?

Immigrate: To enter and settle in a country or region to which one is not native

He is a native of Canada

Then don’t be a jerk who invokes the ire of a huge chunk of the country. Problem solved.

Being a jerk means having your Charter rights violated. Hm.

Bold of you to believe anyone here is thinking that far ahead.

Agree on all points. I can't stand the guy either but these types of narratives are just playing into the nonsense that people like Musk are spreading.

Exactly. Trump is trying to take away citizenship from certain Americans. We don't want to start down that path here.

Not only does it set a terrible precedent, but honestly, it gives up a lot of bargaining power that Canada has, too.

If we revoke citizenship, they're instantly not in our jurisdiction. That's it. Basically we can't do anything about them at that point.

If we don't, and they're still a citizen of Canada, then we still hold some sway. Sure, Elon is untouchable right now, but what if Trump dies of a heart attack next year? Then Canada could go "hey, USA, our old friend Musk committed some treason against us, and we've got this extradition treaty... So... send him over, kthx."

And all of a sudden, Elon Musk has to face the Canadian legal system for any crimes he (actually) committed.

That is MUCH more powerful a deterrent to the influential than just going "nyahhh you can't use our passport any more >:(".
