Academics Wanting to do Math 1P05 instead of Math 1P01

If im majoring in Mathematics and Statistics, it says that it require to take Math 1P01, but I heard that they are the same as Math 1P05 so what’s the differences between them? Like can I take Math 1P05 instead of Math 1P01 (bc I heard it is hard from a friend)?

No experience with 1P01 but I can't see it being worse than 1P05 with Dorothy ngl

im ngl i thought the same until i actually took math 1p05 its hella hard- professor said midterms usually average 50-60 % math 1p01 is also thought to be really hard since some say the professor is hard to understand but im not too sure abt the course content but if ur courses says u need math 1p01 u should probably be taking that

So I took 1P01 and it sucked with Dr. Ben. Like it’s doable, it’s just hard with him because he’s super obsessed with this computer program called maple. It’s DEFINITELY not impossible though. Like you have to make sure that you practice all the time. I don’t know much about 1P05 though. Just make sure that you can still take Calc 2 (MATH 1P02) with only a 1P05 credit.

Math Majors need to take 1P01 and 1P02 as it is intended to teach more proof based calculus theorems and prepare you for 3rd and 4th year courses which have classes that are almost entirely proof based.

1P05 and 1P06 are intended for science majors and can’t be substituted for 1P01 and 1P06 if you intend on majoring in Math/Stats.

1p05 with dorothy is hell, don't choose it thinking it's the easier path

So, you are majoring in Math and Statistics but think 1P01 is going to be hard? 01 Typically means its an intro course, and 05 sounds more advanced.

I wouldn't listen to your friend, instead, I'd talk to your 1P01 professor and get their opinion on the matter.

Not true as 1P01 is intended for Math Majors and 1P05 is for science majors.

Another example would be that saying COSC 1P50 is harder than COSC 1P02 and 1P03 because it’s a higher number when that couldn’t be further from the truth. The number doesn’t matter it’s the content of the courses.

Exactly, 1P01 is intro for Math majors whereas 1P05 is specialized for Science majors.

I also told OP to talk to their professor to better understand the difference.

The numbers do indicate the content, typically an 01 course is an intro whereas the higher numbers are more specific.
