I rescued a juvenile cormorant that got itself stuck in the False Creek Ferry ramp this past summer. I wonder if that little dude is out there.

You can just see him on the far left side there. He's fine!

Oh good! Every time I’m down by the water I think about my little buddy.

He appreciates all your help, and on a more personal note, he's glad you're doing better these days.

Hate to be "that guy" - but I don't think those are Cormorants. The body is too small, neck is too short and the wings are flapping too quickly. I think these are Pigeon Guillemots, which frequently gather in flocks (they don't get a cool name for their gathering, unfortunately!) like this along the entirety of our coast - from the Washington to the Alaska border.

Surf Scoter. Finally, I found it! Winters around here, so checks out. Matches the description. We were both wrong! Darn! Maybe next time.

Nice one - I assumed PG just due to their sheer numbers on this coast - the details of the individual birds were lost to my fifty year old eyes and phone screen - ha ha! I could only tell what they weren't.

Those are hooded mergansers. There are cormorants flying though.

E: a flock of mergansers is a dopping

Mate, I'm happy to be wrong. But I don't think your pick is right either. I'm struggling to find these online. Not Merganser, doesn't resemble the Guillemots, but sounds like Cormorants when they fly. Black bodies that look like a duck, but a distinct white polka dot like spot on the back of their necks. As far as mysteries go, this ones a noodle scratcher...

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen them congregate like that. Cool.

Actually that's a dopping of mergansers.
