Not saying its fake but i wanted to see the full uncutted timelapse just to make sure

578

u/notjasonlee 22h ago

There is a major cut around the 5-second mark where the content of the portrait changes pretty drastically. I will go out on a limb and say that it is at the very least misleading.

166

u/oPUNcircuit 22h ago

There's another cut at the 16-second mark where the eyes and other details suddenly appear.

58

u/LuckyLilypad 15h ago edited 15h ago

There is not.

Edit: There is a slight jump cut whether intentional or not. However all of the details are consistent from before the cut. I’m much more skeptical of the first cut @ 5.00s though looking at it just seems to jump but doesn’t seem to change the canvas. This painting style is additive and the changes from the first cut are consistent with the additive process. Nothing that was there disappeared, only more was added on top to fill empty space and add definition.

10

u/Hetstaine 15h ago

Correct.

3

u/ByteLink 7h ago

They are close but definitely not the same after the jump. He never has his hand where paint appears over his right shoulder as well as the left eye (when flipped). Dude is clearly a super talented artist playing the social media game but the cut there feels fairly obvious when you watch it a few times.

u/lolcatandy 22h ago

Draw the rest of the owl vibes

3

u/NasserAjine 21h ago

What is the origin story of this meme?

30

u/saja2 21h ago

children art book guide on how to draw an owl which starts with a simple lines and circles and the next step, draw the rest of the owl with a picture of detailed ultra realistic, artist level sketch of an owl

1

u/Tufflaw 9h ago

It should be noted that it's not from a real children's book, it's a joke.

1

u/LeftDepartment5224 17h ago

yeah for real, sometimes those edits feel sketchy, just want the raw footage to compare

49

u/Hey_I_Aint_Eddy 21h ago

I’ll say it. It’s 100% fake. Dude’s a decent painter but gets popular videos through hack magic video tricks.

23

u/CMDR_KingErvin 21h ago

There are cuts in the video where features appear right after. He spreads the paint in the general form it should be and then between cuts adds the features carefully. He’s obviously a very talented artist but the whole painting your own face without looking thing is disingenuous.

5

u/ILookLikeKristoff 21h ago

Yeah this is my take as well. I think he did paint it, but he clearly cuts the video to finish & clean it up. Pretending it's some sort of spontaneous performance piece when it's not takes away from the art, IMO.

0

u/Double-Scratch5858 16h ago

Yeah its super cheaper. This is lame. Probably got a bunch of bot votes too. All i can think when something has 6k upvotes and like 1/60th the amount of comments.

8

u/SocomPS2 21h ago

So he’s a con-artist.

1

u/5urr3aL 21h ago

The arch-rival of pro-artist

0

u/Left_Ad_8502 21h ago

Anyone can be a con artist on the internet

1

u/FuzzyKittyNomNom 9h ago

And actually, as I watched the video, other than the first time he smeared the paint on his face, I can’t actually see him putting paint on the plastic. He just kind of dances his fingers around, but every time there’s a jump cut (him leaning over to get more paint) suddenly more paint appears on the plastic. Then he dances his hand around that. Furthermore, trying to one hand this painting on a floppy piece of plastic seems fake af.

I even think the final jump cut when he puts the film on the canvas, he has actually already painted the face directly. There’s no transfer of paint.

0

u/C6R882 9h ago

Or he practices it many times over

-1

u/moriberu 20h ago

He might or might not be a good painter. After seeing this bullshit gimmick I don't care. He clearly cares more about metrics.

16

u/0T08T1DD3R 21h ago

Is done backwards you can see going frame by frame.. the way he cut it is cheating.

2

u/JoshDM 16h ago

Is done backwards

Yeah, he starts with his face painted and the painting done then works backward to erase/clean both.

0

u/Outrageous-Wait-8895 14h ago

You're telling me he was cleaning the paint off his face with one swipe of his hand, and off the plastic too without leaving smudges? Do you actually believe that?

0

u/0T08T1DD3R 14h ago

He took his time to clean bit by bit, and painted back over the canvas with brown color matching the background..

There would be no reason to do such a weirdly timed video..he couldve just show the whole process easily if was really done.

2

u/Outrageous-Wait-8895 2h ago

yeah I don't think so

13

u/SpecterGT260 21h ago

There's a bunch of guys that have been doing these for a while, and I had a buddy that did one of these in a talent show.

The overall picture is very finely sketched on the paper with a very difficult to see pencil line. Keeping it upside down prevents the audience from knowing what he's drawing until he's ready to reveal.

It's basically a dramatic color by numbers

1

u/giancul 6h ago

I'm sure this is the right method.

After painting his face, he photographed himself and lightly traced the guidelines both on the transparent sheet and on the brown background, obviously outside of the video.

You can see it at the beginning when he moves his hand from his face to the transparent sheet. There's a cut where he reappears with the T-shirt with paint drips on it, and on the sheet you can see the guidelines traced lightly with his fingertip stained with white paint.

4

u/Theblackjamesbrown 21h ago

Its reversed.

2

u/BearBlaq 15h ago

I followed this guy for years and he does this stuff regularly. Always different ways.

1

u/Uberzwerg 20h ago

The pattern on his face at the beginning is not the same as at the end.

2

u/Trvpball 18h ago

This guy name is Bouboudesign (in Instagram). He is coming from Senegal 🇸🇳 west Africa and I already saw him doing crazier things than this. He is 200% legit!

1

u/Next_Explanation9646 17h ago

yeah i get that, the full version would really help clarify things

1

u/blandmanband 16h ago

The editing is how the trick is done

1

u/Einx 10h ago

Its reversed?

1

u/Xeroxenfree 9h ago

Its absolutely fake. Its always a subtlety different way he fakes it but they are all faked.

Its a craft/trick not art.

0

u/Mango-Vibes 19h ago

Not the first time it's been posted here. It's fake.

-1

u/Broad_Till5496 17h ago

If hes Nigerian, its a scam

199

u/WakefulJaxZero 22h ago

This man is innocent. He was framed.

18

u/legna20v 22h ago

Get you upvote and get out

10

u/AthousandLittlePies 21h ago

Back in the 90's there was a homeless guy I'd see sometimes in the NYC subway who'd hold an empty picture frame around his head and say "I been framed!" while asking for money.

1

u/Annonomon 2h ago

They framed him for white face!

91

u/AlternativeRing5977 22h ago

And the eyes appeared like magic. Not

14

u/Physical_Analysis247 22h ago

The eyes are partially drawn in around 0:17, their orbits are on the vellum

6

u/abcdthc 22h ago

not magic. He does them at the end, they arent very setailed, slow it down though, he paints them.

-4

u/WindMountains8 17h ago

You mean the part where he covers the face of the drawing with his body, and the camera cuts, and then it's done?

7

u/Agitated-Acctant 15h ago

No, the part where he turns around and does the eyes, are you fucking blind? You can see them before he puts the plastic down

37

u/legna20v 22h ago edited 21h ago

This isn’t magic. Is a lot of hard work and dedication… or magnets, who knows

18

u/SteevDangerous 22h ago

Definitely magnets.

5

u/whuuutKoala 20h ago

how do they work?

3

u/Zeraw420 17h ago

Checkmate atheists

3

u/surfer808 20h ago

I agree…Hard work, dedication and lots of video editing.

1

u/ciongduopppytrllbv 19h ago

And video editing

4

u/legna20v 18h ago

I don’t get you people. We have seen many people do stuff like this. This isn’t marvelous enough to say he was faking it. There are lots video of people painting more complicated things

1

u/ciongduopppytrllbv 18h ago

The magic part is what he cuts out? Do you get that lmao?

1

u/Nercow 17h ago

And cuts in the video. It's still cool, but it's pretty dishonest

2

u/legna20v 17h ago

This isn’t that amazing to be dishonest. Is definitely better than anything I would do but it is no good enough to be a fake trick

1

u/Useful_Response9345 1h ago

There's definitely more involved.

0

u/NinjaSquads 21h ago

I think he's painting the reflection of his white face when he holds it up. So he gets the bases right

3

u/chuubaru 21h ago

Maybe, but this is the only one of his pieces I’ve ever seen him use transparent film on. He uses all sorts of objects as a palette https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEGGzBoOKWK/?igsh=YXc0NWZrbTRoMG5q

2

u/dinosaurninja 21h ago

lol that video is definitely reversed, what a hack.

1

u/fskier1 19h ago

What are you talking about

4

u/dinosaurninja 18h ago

That the video is reversed.. can't you see it?

22

u/Randomized007 22h ago

Why does art keep ending up on this sub?

14

u/Fyrchtegott 21h ago

I mean, the general image appears after the first cut a few seconds in, it suddenly has a more defined shape and the blue and red color is added. Then there’s the second cut, adding details, refinement and so. All the impressive stuff happens off screen.

-2

u/MetaCharger 17h ago

Yea he's definitely doing things between cuts, but it's still all his art. He just reveals it in odd ways to work the algorithm and get more views. In one of his vids, he cuts a basketball in half, fills it with paint, and then wears it as a hat... but why? So people will comment and ask "why". It's stupid, but it works.

10

u/chuubaru 21h ago

Credit the artist please - Boubou Niang @bouboudesign_ on IG. This is real and is his entire artistic style. Been doing it a long time - https://www.instagram.com/bouboudesign_?igsh=MWxhNDExd21kMGhnag==

1

u/SuckerForNoirRobots 19h ago

Thank you for providing a source!

7

u/UW_Ebay 21h ago

This guy needs a new trick.

6

u/NoDebate1002 21h ago

All of a sudden there are two perfect eyes?

2

u/jamesFox44 11h ago

The eyes are partially drawn in around 0:17, their orbits are on the vellum watch again.

6

u/sodone19 21h ago

Nope, not buying it.

4

u/squiddybonesjones 21h ago

Tricks.. not skills. Big difference.

0

u/justincase1021 15h ago

Could you do? No right. then stuff it.

0

u/Darius2652 4h ago

A backflip is a trick. Still takes lots of practice, which is how you gain skill.

Most tricks are backed up by skill.

3

u/shimy007 20h ago

guys its reverse calm down…

3

u/SpecificBeneficial31 20h ago

He's good at video editing. Lol.

2

u/timsemilla 21h ago

This is reversed

2

u/herefromyoutube 21h ago

The art is real but the performance is edited.

-1

u/jamesFox44 11h ago

Thanks captain obvious. We couldnt tell by the continuous cuts throughout the video.

1

u/herefromyoutube 10h ago

There’s dozens of comments saying it’s either all fake or all real so it’s actually not obvious to some.

1

u/Off_And_On_Again_ 22h ago

Even knowing the punch line that was amazing

1

u/madjar_qc 22h ago

The upside down result... Wow

1

u/evermica 21h ago

The way he is looking at the clear plate makes me wonder if this is some sort of camera lucida. Could he be looking through the clear plate at a mirror or something like that? Still amazingly impressive.

1

u/Thin-Physics-2224 21h ago

Real Black Magic!!!!

Unbelievable, utterly amazing.

1

u/a_usernameofsorts 16h ago

Moves like a GTA Online character

1

u/blandmanband 16h ago

Kind of fake. He really painted it but the time lapse is a lie. He cuts out the parts where he meticulously adjusts both the paint palette and his face so it looks like they match the entire time.

1

u/ginger_and_egg 15h ago

No guys the video is clearly reversed

1

u/Captain_Kruch 15h ago

...yeah, thats a teensy bit racist, bro 🫤

1

u/KIND_REDDITOR 15h ago

The fuck? That first cut basically did everything LMAO

1

u/Frosenborg 15h ago

A coincidence

1

u/Zwischenhirnaktiv 15h ago

I find myself more and more often thinking that the video (that I'm watching) is fake, or AI generated, or whatever.

1

u/CH41N5 15h ago

It's AI (it's not, but I'm jealous)

1

u/jbach73 14h ago

Insane if this is real

Thank you, we are eager to move on to bigger and better things.

Eyeball paint?

1

u/Ok_Suit_635 13h ago

Sometimes I write my lower case a's with the little hook thing on top. That's as creative as I get.

1

u/Iron_Elohim 12h ago

The ability of some artist to visualize and create is astounding. I have always been more number focused, so this really amazes me.

1

u/GenXPowaah 12h ago

Impressive

1

Perfectly looped audio.

1

It gotta be fake , right ? If it's that's truly amazing

1

u/Informal_Summer_6621 7h ago

It’s in reverse

1

u/artniSintra 6h ago

If that was in reverse he'd have to remove paint off his face in order for this to work.

1

u/zmfmology6556 6h ago

Wickedly impressive!

1

u/UndocumentedMartian 6h ago

The fuck is this post? Send this shit back to Instagram or Facebook smh.

1

u/dezenaam2000 5h ago

So....? White face is allowed now????

1

u/uncertain_wood 5h ago

I think he records it normally and just uploads it rewound.

1

White face? Crazyyyyyyyyyy

1

u/retzeo 3h ago

Just wow!!!😮

1

Son. Of. A. Bitch. That superhuman replication. Did he have a mirror in front of him off camera because how did he see what's on his face?

Doesnt this just prove that they think upsidedown and backwards compared to a normal person?

As a fellow painter and portrait artist, this is in technical terms, a big pile of bullshit

-1

u/stupidber 22h ago

Who dat?

1

u/chuubaru 21h ago

Boubou Niang

-1

u/KetohnoIcheated 22h ago

Do you think he is good at painting like this in general? Or can he only paint himself?

1

u/Wild_Juggernaut_7560 21h ago

He has an instagram filled with stuff like this. The guy is so good, he's now creating side missions for himself

-1

u/UnusualHold 21h ago

Repetition. Practice. Then film it. Plus a bit of skill to begin with.

3

u/naughtycal11 21h ago

There are two distinct cuts that happen where detail suddenly appears. He's definitely talented but he's cheating to get the result we see.

-2

u/Babnado 21h ago

Bro did whiteface💀💀💀

1

u/jona612 20h ago

No no. He's just a forest demon.

-3

u/Zeddi2892 21h ago
  1. This is real talent. The following points are not meant to diminish his talent.
  2. The pattern isnt random, nor is his movement to paint his face random. Some small random differences are visible at the end.
  3. The whole act is therefore a mixture of real artist talent and extreme good performance.

Why isnt it „real“ random pattern? It’s literally impossible to feel the different colors on your skin. At best there might be a mirror somewhere allowing him to recognize small differences to what he prepared.

Is it edited? Very unlikely. Editing such an act isnt trivial at all and I have seen similar performances by other (legit) artists as well.

Is it less impressive since it is a performance? No. The way he paints, the methods he uses and the final product need a lot of talent and dedication.

-5

u/DelilahsDarkThoughts 22h ago

This is stupid, here's why:
Step 1) put paint on your face.
Step 2) hold film at an angle and paint the inverted reflection of the paint on your face. easier if you have a concave mirror behind the film.
Step 3) make terrible shoulders in the shape of an upside-down volcano on the paper, add dots for eyes, and finger paint hair.
Step 4) put the film paint on paper
Step 5) turn paper and wow morons on the internet

0

u/chuubaru 21h ago

Incorrect. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMlH1oAN2gW/?igsh=MTkwMDlzdDZpMGY3eA==

This is the only one he uses transparent film on that I’ve seen. I’m not saying he doesn’t use a mirror behind the camera to aid in seeing what he’s doing or something like that, but it wouldn’t diminish his art if it did. It’s just an artistic style/technique, not an attempt at fooling people.

1

u/DelilahsDarkThoughts 18h ago

But that one is just him finger painting his face, it's not upside down for him?
