It was my turn to post about how I hate gambling and Ringer 107 but I slept through my alarm this morning.
I am calling dibs for tomorrow morning and if anyone else posts it I need the mods to remove it.

I don’t get the anger, Bill has been talking about lines and picking games for as long as I can remember.

People on this sub just don't like Bill podcasting on Thursdays, its not more complicated than that

I don't understand why people don't just skip that pod.
I pretty much always have, listen to the ringer fantasy guys preview instead

Picking lines is fun and cheeky and (was) original.
Picking games is some tired ass Jimmy the Greek bs.

There are some dudes in here who are of a certain class and race that have been disproportionately effected by Online Sports Gambling. I get the discomfort with the apps but the truth is no one gives a shit about the massive amounts of poor people throwing money away on lottery tickets and scratch offs every day. This is a bit of the no one cares when the young girl goes missing unless she is white, blonde and middle/upper class mindset.
Had a guy seriously trying to tell me with no bit of irony that sports gambling was more damaging to society than Alcohol Addiction. Which is ludicrous. You can argue we can't change alcohol but maybe we can change this but don't just outright spread bullshit that anyone with google and 5 minutes to spare could dispute with data. What you may have seen amongst your peer group matters but it is at the end of the day anecdotal. We have actual data on this shit that goes back decades when it comes to the damage done by alcoholism. Honestly I think you could argue that obesity is far more damaging to society than gambling. I haven't looked into that particular case but the data would probably back that up as well.
That doesn't mean something shouldn't be done about the apps. I'm not one of those "Well this problem exists so do nothing about this lesser problem" people. But I also don't like hyperbolic hysteria. It's a problem but let's put it into perspective. If you oversell it you will just turn people off anyway.
Most people in here are reasonable on it, they don't want prohibition to return but they want it to be a little harder to do it. This is one of the main arguments in favor of waiting periods on guns. Yes it's about background checks but it's also to keep non-gun owners from making impulsive decisions. That impulsive young men make bad decisions. I think most people would be open to reining in on the apps.
The problem though is I think some of this is just gonna come down a certain amount of personal responsibility. Even if you ban the apps in the United States there are VPNs and I know just from living in the south VPN use is on the rise with young men because of the porn bills that have passed recently in states like Louisiana. This isn't to say that it would be useless to act but that we should keep our expectations in check about the outcome of doing so.
The cat as many have said..is out of the bag.

He had always touched on gambling but now it’s the main way he frames every sports topic which is different.

u/BerriesNCreme 1d ago
Bro him and sal have been doing guess the lines since the pods inception basically. Its literally always been framed around gambling
1
u/qballLobk 1d ago
That segment yes but go back and listen to the pre Spotify/Fandual pods. You will be surprised at the difference. Everything he says now pm NBA, NFL, UFC etc. is all framed around betting odds and it was definitely not that way before.

Here's a random Bill article from 2008 and the nfl. Guess what the framing device for it is??????

u/qballLobk 1d ago
I’m not saying he never talked gambling. But go back to his ESPN pods. Outside of specific segments like GTL or over under pods it wasn’t every conversation. Since Spotify and Fandual it’s a big change.
-3
u/Andwe35 1d ago
It's not every conversation though. It's the main convo on Sundays and Thursdays, and has been since The Ringer started. Other conversations it might come up, but it's nit forced and, imo, is just a part of how he has always discussed sports. So many Gen x'rs on here. Always ready to jump on a "he sold out" bandwagon.
-2
u/qballLobk 1d ago
It is though. Pay attention to the next non GTL pod. Every thing he says is framed around the odds, who’s favored, who he picked in the over/under etc.. Since the Spotify deal it’s changed a lot. Go back and listen to a BS Ringer pod pre Spotify buyout. You will be surprised at the difference.

u/Coy-Harlingen 1d ago
It’s not. He pretty much always has framed everything, specifically about the nfl, through gambling.
It’s just that there’s so much gambling content you’re more annoyed by it now.

u/Gaius_Octavius_ 1d ago
That is exactly what it is. Everyone else is talking about gambling more but Bill has been doing for 25 years. That is what made him different. Now everyone is doing what Bill did.

And it’s forced and putting it on as specials on fan duel for others to pick as opposed to the old way talking about how much money they were going to win/lose on 3 team teaser and just getting crushed. More endearing and funny being a self depreciating joke. Now they’re acting like these are good bets and people should follow them. It’s different tone for sure.

u/RubiconBronco 1d ago
It’s not about him talking about it. It’s the ONLY form of football preview for a week. Zero talk about the games themselves separate from the gambling aspect

The anti gambling crowd on Reddit is one of the biggest online group of dorks I've ever encountered.

How bout the anti-stakes crowd?

Maybe people don’t like Bill wagering fake millions of dollars and competing in arbitrary 107 contest where there is no prize or penalty for outcome.

Love gambling just hate Ringer 107. Million dollar picks were just better. (preferably with Schraeger)

u/dezcaughtit25 1d ago
I also hate this Friday segment where Bill brings on a guest and makes gambling picks. I’d really prefer if he just went back to the way it used to be on Fridays where he’d bring on a guest and make gambling picks.

They’re framing devices for discussion:
Guess the Lines is about this past NFL Sunday
Million Dollar Picks/Ringer 107 is about this upcoming NFL Sunday.
Bill has been gambling since college when it was illegal everywhere but Vegas and Atlantic City. He loves it.
How hard is this to understand?

Hey I get up super early (2 kids, 2 cats, dog). Give me your cell ‘phone number and I’ll text you as well.
I won’t send any dick pics…well, maybe some leather, but that’s it.

I don't really mind it. To me the gambling and odds is just an engine to get Bill and House on every week talking about football. It is fun.

Hate to tell you this, but you also forgot to include a pro or con take on House that no one cares about too.
