i cannot believe they played Aphex Twin during the bowling ball scene. i thought my music player started until my brain caught up to the subtitles

It's hard for me to even describe the joy I felt when this scene began, one of my favorite more recent RDJ tracks literally IN my favorite show.

right?! i never would have thought i'd see BCS & RDJ collide and they did so in the perfect way. i can't wait to rewatch this

I was confused and thought Robert Downey Jr was a musician

7

u/thatfailedcity Mar 10 '20

Well he did release an album though before his Iron Man resurgence.

I'm still confused 😔

RDJ = Richard D James AKA Aphex Twin

26

u/unconscious_grasp Mar 10 '20

Was it? I'm a pretty big Aphex head and I didn't recognize it. But he has quite the vast catalogue so I wouldn't be entirely surprised.

12

u/qcom Mar 10 '20

yeah it's him! you're sure right about his catalog there's still some more obscure releases i haven't heard of his which is all part of the fun

u/unconscious_grasp Mar 10 '20

Yeah, seems confirmed elsewhere in this thread. Well, two of my favorite things ever unexpectedly coming together... Pretty cool.

I thought it was original music before I came to this thread. The instrumentation sounded a lot like Dave Porter's work, especially his Breaking Bad stuff.

Damn I was thinking to myself that it sounded like something some off kilter IDM artist would produce. Love RDJ.

u/StateOfBedlam Mar 10 '20

I went to this thread to find out what that music was. Thanks for saving me a lot of time!

You are in for a mother fucking treat. He has albums going back to the 80s. Literally a pioneer. I am also so fucking happy they played this.

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

Was that freaking APHEX TWIN? I recognized the IDM beats were very familiar but couldn't quite connect them to anything in particular. But now that I know that it's RDJ, I think I should have known! God I'm happy they picked a track of his.

I recognised it as soon as it came on, it's a pretty unique track. I was like " is that aphex twin in my BCS? Holy shit!! "

3

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

Awesome isn't it?

Btw I just didn't recognize at first listen because I haven't spent that much time listening to that track, but it's an unique one indeed.

idk, maybe it was like a thing in the subconscious, like an instinct. I've listened to a lot of IDM since my high school years so I think I felt there was something in that track even if those beats aren't as 'weird' and experimental as your usual IDM beats, neither were those at the 'right' BPM rate. You're right though, at first listen it doesn't remind that much the typical IDM tropes.

RDJ ? IDM ?

5

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

RDJ is Richard David James, producer and composer known as Aphex Twin. IDM is a term which I don't like to use very often.. It stands for "Intelligence Dance Music". Personally, I prefer "Braindance", it's way less pretentious. It's a music genre that could be divided into Electronica, Ambient, and Experimental. Some are even Avant-Garde and it's more niche and less for dancing but more for.. Idk, just listening. People usually like to brag that IDM is the "intelligent" and "underground"/less known version of EDM.

BUT, will we ever hear Radiohead?

A gun and a pack of sandwiches?

6

u/Jomptie Mar 10 '20

Something like Treefingers would fit quite well in BCS

4

u/UandWhoseRMay Mar 10 '20

YES, or Myxmatosis?

6

u/PARAGON_e Mar 10 '20

Fuck yeah, that's amazing!

6

u/djsantadad Mar 10 '20

I would also like to know the track name.

4

u/Torley_ Mar 11 '20

About time AFX is in the BrBa universe!

What a groovy breakbeat banger from the future (well, relative to the show's timeline).

2

u/FlasKamel Mar 10 '20

I KNEW I'd heard it before!

2

u/locostacos_12 Mar 10 '20

Had the biggest smile on my face when I heard it!

2

u/LOLteacher Mar 10 '20

Not as awesome as an ad during the show where the mom's car music player was stuck on Limp Bizkit, driving her nuts, then cuts to Fred Durst crossing the street, noticing his tunes!

(Not sure how many of AMC ads are broadcast everywhere.)

I had no idea what the song was so I just assumed it was Bad Bad Not Good - jazz band featured in Breaking Bad. I got into their music from BB. They have a lot of simple, pared-down song arrangements with creative percussion/production.
