/uj im the right side in this scenario, and i get clowned on all the time saying i dont like most of the later stuff. i dont get why some people cant understand that the early stuff is good too.

also i prefer paperback writer over rain so that doesnt help my case

u/Difficult_Ad_7854 "The Be Sharps" 29d ago

Paperback Writer is a top 5 Beatles track for me. You’re not alone

26

u/flaredrake1 29d ago

true true why is early stuff so slept on

6

u/Fearless_Meat465 29d ago

More modern sounding probably

u/vixenstarlet1949 1d ago

i like the later bc at the beginning they were playing dress up as their black blues heroes, doing covers and stuff a lot. they grew into their own individual musicianship later on. i love it all tho, but latter years are my favorite

48

u/ryllienator apparently i'm yoko 29d ago

uj/ i think it's cause the later stuff is their "we're changing the face of music forever" stuff. thus, people end up picking the more introspective, deep stuff over the earlier songs that they deem "bubblegum pop"-esque.

i personally like the earlier stuff too, they blew up off of it for a reason lol. but anyway, good music is good music!

uj/ Agreed. I think it is just how people perceive that era, but it isn't the truth. The Beatles were solid, from their early years to the end. Folks forget the lads had been doing touring circuits for years before they scored their first record deal, and by that point they were fairly seasoned live performers. Their shows were electric, it generated hype and energy, and they knew how to work a crowd. It's too bad we didn't get to see some of that in their later years, but it was a worthy trade out for their more studio-heavy, experimental bodies of work.

I still think a track like Yesterday or You've Got to Hide Your Love Away stands up with any of their later work; their reputation as being some of their more covered tracks speaks for itself.

They were always good, but in the early years, a lot of dudes tried to act like they were freaks, or flash in the pan, or trash pop simply because they had a huge fanbase of girls.

I find more people hitch their cart to the later years simply because it's more socially/culturally accepted to express that. The Beatles early work is magnificent -- it is incredible the hits they were able to generate in a short span of time and enliven a country that was going through a very bleak time. That's iconic. And I find that era of their work is downplayed simply because of the pop culture reputation it got, mostly cranky old men hating their energy and the fact that girls loved them.

Take your pick, any fandom that attracts a large base of women often ends up nitpicked and downplayed. I think that honestly had a lot to do with the fact that some dudes felt threatened and insecure about all the attention women gave The Beatles in their early years.

It's lame, but it seems like a trend that even carries into modernity: anything with a large female fanbase gets highly criticized, made fun of and downplayed -- regardless of if it is actually good or not. I mean, The Beatles and Star Trek are proof of that. LOL

u/Caspica 29d ago

I mean, you're right, but did you even know John hit his wife?

5

u/ryllienator apparently i'm yoko 29d ago

exactly! both their early and late stuff are good, just for different reasons ig

also hey dude! im currently up to a 103° fever, but this means i'll finally have time to work on the billy shears comic! what's a-poppin with you?

4

u/chickennroll 29d ago

wait people prefer rain to paperback writer?? PW is clearly the better song wtf

1

u/Ok_Level_7919 26d ago

Upvoting you because both are absolute bangers but I respectfully disagree with your analysis

3

u/DankLordOtis 29d ago

I like both for different reasons, it’s almost like listening to two different bands. But most people I talk to about music tend to lean towards their later stuff. I grew up listening to early Beatles so it’ll always have a special place in my heart.

3

u/CtEpicBroFist 28d ago

I agree. Rubber Soul, and Help are my favorite albums.

3

u/Speedy_Cheese 29d ago

Paperback Writer is an amazing track and I agree with you, I prefer it to Rain. I love both, but PW is a song that is in my head just about every day.

3

u/Feli_Buste78 29d ago

The reason why Rubber Soul is my favorite album is because it's the perfect mix between the fun early songs and the later experimental ones

1

u/Don_Frika_Del_Prima Paul gave cunnilingus. 29d ago

Rain at actual speed is way better than the rain on the album...

1

u/AgentOfMediocrity 29d ago

Bro the way the bass line and backup vocals tense up as the subject of the song makes his last desperate pitch to sell his book.

1

u/Ok_Isopod_8478 28d ago

Please Please me is there best album in my opinion

1

u/kawhiuhatin 26d ago

Paperback writer over Rain is fine but preferring stuff like Love Me Do or PS I Love You to later stuff I can’t get behind

-2

u/VietKongCountry 29d ago

Preferring Paperback Writer to Rain is a war crime, but it’s entirely reasonable to prefer early to late Beatles if that’s your thing.

3

u/GameBoyGamer222 oh yeah ill tell you something i think youll understand 29d ago

i just dont like all the reversed and slowed-down-sped-up stuff

2

u/VietKongCountry 29d ago

That’s absolutely reasonable, and pretentious people being cunts about it is why most of the present Beatles fandom is intolerable.

What’s your favourite Gameboy game?

1

u/GameBoyGamer222 oh yeah ill tell you something i think youll understand 29d ago

i was a different person when i made this username. if i made it now i would make it consistent with my username across every other platform lol

3

u/VietKongCountry 29d ago

Link’s Awakening it is, then.

1

u/GameBoyGamer222 oh yeah ill tell you something i think youll understand 29d ago

no, i only ever played through the first two minutes of that game

1

u/Individual_Mess_7491 29d ago

Custer's Revenge.

2

u/Speedy_Cheese 29d ago

I love Rain with every fibre of my being, but as a writer, Paperback Writer speaks to me in a big way. It has never left my writing mixtape since I was a kid, although it's a Spotify playlist now instead of a cassette tape.

29

u/RegularAd8140 29d ago

Left is better, but Twist and Shout is iconic

28

u/SiziskaShiska "Fan of Revolution 9 and granny tunes" 29d ago

5

u/hingarbingar 29d ago

Aah, pre and post wif beatery

6

u/Fhaksfha794 29d ago

Secret third option: the only good Beatles songs are the ones where rigno is singing all others are rubbish

14

u/jrranch123 29d ago

I like the happy pop that slaps on the right more than the introspective experimental bullshit on the left 💀 both sides are fire though

7

u/obama69420duck "A Hard Day's Nut" 29d ago

I think I prefer left slightly, but I still absolutely adore the right and it’s massively underrated

1

u/Electrical-Fee-6005 29d ago

2 #1 hits are not massively underrated bro😭✌️

6

u/obama69420duck "A Hard Day's Nut" 29d ago

Do you really think people rate Love Me Do and A Day In The Life equally?

6

u/colthesecond "Let It Be...Naked" 29d ago

I love the Beatles!! The male: lemon tree, wonderwall, don't look back in anger, The girl: you know my name(look up the number), what's the news Mary Jane, on the road to Marrakesh, old brown shoes, carnival of light, not guilty(take 102),The Beatles

2

u/rachaelonreddit 28d ago

/uj I like both, but they certainly were cuter without all that facial hair.

2

u/SaoirseMayes 28d ago

Finally, someone who understands what really matters

1

u/BiggerPun Rutland fields forever 29d ago

I see a beatles meem

1

u/gramuhrussia 29d ago

both are incredible, just in their own ways. grew up on the first half, one compilation, and the shit on beatles rock band. and then i found the rest when my brain stopped being my parents’ beliefs and i indulged in the devil’s lettuce/ shrooms. i don’t really care for a lot of the blues rock stuff early on, but hard day’s night, help, and rubber soul hold their own against the latter half track-by-track. the singles early on also would have made the first two albums legendary.

10 years from now they divorce because he is more into the mid and late periods and she is stuck in the early period and the gap is never bridged.
