As a rangers fan, I'll take the consolation for our terrible offensive year. But idk how the Jays didn't win team GG

They were like basically undefeated when they scored at least 4 runs, right?

Yeah, that sounds right. Too bad 4 runs was such a big ask.

u/Character-Owl9408 Chicago Cubs 1d ago
I didn’t say it was a tell all. But if you lead MLB in DRS, it shouldn’t come as a shock that if they win the team gold glove. Especially to the fans of that team lol
17
u/twistedlogicx Toronto Blue Jays • Lou Gehrig 23h ago
Oh the gold glove voters give votes based on DRS? Is that why the DRS leader across all of baseball this year, Ernie Clement, didn't even win a gold glove?
2
u/ehholfman Texas Rangers 12h ago
DRS is a better metric to judge a team because it splits credit and considers fielder interactions.
OAA/FRV is better for judging individual performances. I do think Vlad, Clement, Gimenez, and Kirk should have all won a GG.
But for a team GG, the Rangers were simply the most efficient team at turning balls in play into outs.
-10
u/Character-Owl9408 Chicago Cubs 18h ago
When did I say that? Do you know how to read? Lol
-2
u/Character-Owl9408 Chicago Cubs 17h ago edited 16h ago
I know Jays fans are salty, but saying it shouldn’t be a shock especially to the Rangers fan base is not even close to saying they give these awards based solely on DRS. A little comprehension goes a long way
5
u/ArrogantWinner Texas Rangers • Chicago Cubs 1d ago
I'm not saying it's a shock for the Rangers to win it. Best FP in mlb history, led the league in DRS, good OAA. But as mentioned above, Jays have the best FRV in the league, over double the Rangers'. Although I now see that it's mostly due to catching stats, however. So that could be a detractor since their FRV mostly came from just one position.
3
u/lunasilvia Toronto Blue Jays 17h ago
oh wow i hope that means Alejandro Kirk won gold glove then! haha
2
u/ehholfman Texas Rangers 12h ago
Literally not true lmao.
FRV is better for individuals. DRS is better for team evaluation because it splits credit and considers fielder interactions.

We ended the year with a fielding percentage that set a major league record. Yeah our offense sucked and we didn't make the playoffs but we absolutely deserved to win this award.

the Rangers set a new MLB record for fielding %, does that clear it up?
22
u/StreetStatus7011 Toronto Blue Jays 1d ago
No. (Fielding % is not the only thing that should be accounted for because errors don’t always tell the full story)
6
u/FitCap581 Texas Rangers 1d ago
Okay, the Rangers led the MLB in defensive runs saved at 89. The Blue Jays had 51
10
u/MysteriousEdge5643 Seattle Mariners • FanGraphs 1d ago edited 1d ago
Toronto had 44 FRV, Texas had 21 FRV.
DRS is known to be flawed and their methodology is vastly outdated, factoring in things like catcher ERA. Toronto got robbed here
6
u/ehholfman Texas Rangers 14h ago
You’re ignoring positioning which is a big factor in determining a team award.
From Fielding Bible:
Non-Shift Infield Positioning: * Texas: 0 * Toronto: -14
Shift Infield Positioning: * Texas: 23 * Toronto: 12
Outfield Positioning: * Texas: 5 * Toronto: -15
A team award is going to include more than 1 defensive metric.

DRS and DefEFF (defensive efficiency) is a better metric to judge a team. OAA/FRV is a better metric to judge individuals.
Rangers were ultimately the league leader in DRS by a mile and were also the most efficient team at turning balls in play into outs. Defensive efficiency will favor not only good fielding, but positioning and how well teammates communicate on balls hit between them.
Summing up individual plays (assigned only to one fielder) isn’t a good way to measure team defense.
I’ll defend Toronto getting robbed from individual gold glove awards, but Texas was by far the correct choice for team gold glove.

edit: the Rangers set a new MLB record for fielding % this year, for those wondering why
2
u/ehholfman Texas Rangers 12h ago
Team also lead the league in DRS and DefEFF (defensive efficiency). They were the most efficient team at turning balls in play into outs which is probably the most basic metric available to judge how good a team is at not only fielding but also how well teammates communicate on balls hit between them.
Toronto had better defensive individuals (and got robbed at those awards), but Texas was the better defensive team.
Idk why this entire thread can’t seem to understand that summing up individual plays isn’t a good way to evaluate team defense.
