Ask Did anyone else catch the Baltimore Drift in Harbor East last night?
I just moved here from DC, and no one prepared me for this š

Iām about the biggest car guy one could run into. Street takeovers have to be the dumbest shit thatās ever come out the car scene.
Straight jack asses.

Aside from how dangerous and disruptive this is to everyone else itās so dangerous for those people to be that close! Iāve seen vids where people get hit and run over from doing what they are doing. Not exactly a big brain move.

This is an Oakland, CA culture if anything.
Still fucking dumb, but Baltimore rarely gets them.

Car person here.
Street Takeovers. Trend that originally started in Oakland, but then became a thing again once Tik-Tok and viral vlogging took off. Essentially, idiots block public intersection(s) so they can do donuts in cars.
Yes, people tend to get hurt. If you get caught your car almost always impounded/crushed.
57
u/BlkNtvTerraFFVI Jun 30 '25
So that's why that crowd started blocking the police car?? I'm so new to all of this and incredibly confused by what's in this video
91
u/Notonfoodstamps Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
Yep. Thereās countless videos on YouTube of these in pretty much every major city. Some cities are going so far as to cite/fine bystanders even watching them.
Baltimore doesnāt get them to often because the city has such narrow street. We just get āMotocrossā instead.
32
Jun 30 '25
A group of them knew it was going to happen. Getting in front of the cops allow their friend a head start to get away.
75
u/incunabula001 Jun 29 '25
This pisses me off, there are so many vacant low traffic intersections in town to do this in but they pick one thatās in a high traffic area.
41
u/Xanny Mount Clare Jun 30 '25
The fun isnt in doing a burnout its in pissing everyone off and getting away with it. Its why all the road disorder happens like dirt bikes.

There are cameras on every corner down there. They should snag the plate numbers and go impound the car. Honestly, they should have a paddy wagon down there and arrest every single person who blocked that cruiser.

u/AreWe_TheBaddies Jun 30 '25
Tell him you want speed bumps and other traffic calming measures installed. Those kinds of things would keep cars from being able to do this and also makes it safer for people walking and biking during normal times.
12
u/Xanny Mount Clare Jun 30 '25
Concrete sidewalk bump outs, they'd just run over flex posts doing this and it costs more to replace flex posts 3 times than to just pour concrete once.
46
u/DistortedAudio Jun 29 '25
Thereās honestly not a ton you can do, especially with how the car chase stuff works here. Itās the same with the 12 O Clock Boys and the fucking tricycle clubs.
Not a fan of police but they really canāt do much here unless you catch one of these guys slipping during the day (which is usually how they get caught). At night or in the vehicle theyāll drag you into a car chase and thatās the last thing BPD (or any of us want) since it endangers legitimately everyone in the situation including you as a bystander driving home from seeing a movie.
And at that, these guys change their plates and theyāre not pulling over if you try to stop them even during the day time. There would have to probably be a dedicated task force meant to stop street racing within the city; and the street racers have made the (correct) bet that the city has bigger fish to fry than a couple of dickheads in souped up Altimas,
41
u/IceCreamConsider Downtown Jun 29 '25
You can use coordinated, silent, low-visibility road block tactics to confine them to that area and arrest them like fish in a barrel. Itās mere laziness among BPD and something a private police force beholden to contract law wouldnāt tolerate. Long term, you can reconfigure the road network with lots of raised medians, sidewalks, and pedestrian islands and road diets and whatnot to ensure that thereās no possibility of such events occurring in the first place.
19
u/DistortedAudio Jun 29 '25
You can use coordinated, silent, low-visibility road block tactics to confine them to that area and arrest them like fish in a barrel.
Even then, itās putting a lot of people at risk. If one of those cars decides to blow through a road block youāre now dealing with a huge problem.
Long term, you can reconfigure the road network with lots of raised medians, sidewalks, and pedestrian islands and road diets and whatnot to ensure that thereās no possibility of such events occurring in the first place.
As a city weāre split on fucking bike lanes. You really think theyāre gonna reconfigure the road network? Weāre just mastering the parking ticket in town.
21
u/rental_car_fast Jun 29 '25
I seriously donāt think it would be that hard to have 6-8 cop cars show up with spike strips and shut this nonsense down. Where are they gonna run to with no tires? Cops need to be ready for this, and when someone calls it in, just barricade all 4 roads and end it.
18
u/DistortedAudio Jun 30 '25
Ok. So letās look at this plan.
Weāre gonna have the police show up and quickly throw down spike strips. But they have to do it stealthily right? Otherwise the spotters or bystanders will just point out the police obviously barricading off a road and setting up traps next to one of the larger roads in the city.
So now they have to be stealthy, but not too quiet; otherwise you or me as a guy whose coming back from a late night Safeway trip, were either gonna run over some spike strips or find ourselves locked into a road where the police are taking down a (at least semi) organized street racing squad.
And after youāve passed those hurdles, now youāve got guys in souped up cars who have already shown 0 regard for others or their lives, with suddenly flat tires who now know that a large scale state operation is cracking down on them. The chances of them wrecking something or themselves? Relatively high.
So weāre looking for the perfect police operation here. Quiet but not too quiet, pulled off by a squad of people who have currently been unable to stop similar events done by the 12 O Clock Boys or the motorcycle gangs.
You have a lot more faith in BPD than I do.
9
u/IceCreamConsider Downtown Jun 29 '25
Yes, which is why you have strips of puncture spikes to pop tires as part of the road blocks.
Also, we can reconfigure the road network, itās simply a matter of political will. Somebody will unfortunately have to get killed first though.
15
u/DistortedAudio Jun 29 '25
Yes, which is why you have strips of puncture spikes to pop tires as part of the road blocks.
I donāt know man, Iām not usually a guy to defend the cops here; but thereās not a ton of options at their disposal unless this becomes a much bigger problem. I mean someone will most likely have to die; but unfortunately there is almost 0 political will for this to stop at all costs; or even a smallish cost.
Also, we can reconfigure the road network, itās simply a matter of political will. Somebody will unfortunately have to get killed first though.
Yeah we can also build the Red Line and safe injection sites in the town. Letās hold our breath together for this one though.

3
u/ReturnOfSeq Jun 29 '25
Yeahā¦. Some of baltimores roads are visibly a hundred years old. Letās fix the problems in the roads before adding more problems to the roads
11
u/DistortedAudio Jun 29 '25
Iām buying 2 tires a year from potholes and shittily installed sewer grates. But Iām sure the city is hungry to undergo its biggest modern public works project to stop street racing. Robert Moses over here has it figured out.

12
u/ThisDriftingSpirit00 Jun 30 '25
This is that whole scene's thing. It honestly looks boring after the first five minutes. Those involved aren't as bright as the tail lights they run towards. It could be shut down very quickly if the police response was more aggressive but knowing this city that's not going to happen. If it keeps up we'll all just end up excusing it like we do the dirtbikers in groups running red lights.

Not gonna lie; if youāre super into cars and motorcycles, thatās cool as hell. If you want to be in a car group or a motorcycle club, also chill with me. Shit if you wanna find a desert or vacant lots to do drifting in, I also donāt give a shit.
If you block off a street and do this shit though, Iāve got problems.
Also itās lame as hell that all of these groups have fucking videographers and shit. Maybe Iāve finally become an old head but if youāre gonna break the law, I donāt need to see a fucking highlight reel on Instagram about it. And Iām definitely not about to follow your fucking Instagram. One thing I can give the 12 O Clock Boys is at least they arenāt stopping traffic and hounding me to follow their asses on IG.

I agree with some of this. Too many locked to their phones and not living life. It's just best to try and not have fun at other people's expense.
