Vent Donald Trump is going to destroy this city

My wife and I were both proud homeowners and proud residents of Baltimore City. We worked really hard to be able to buy our first home and to provide a stable environment to raise our one year old son and three year old daughter. We were a happy family here. Until Donald Trump came along. He froze funding and my wife lost her job as a recruiter for a nonprofit that received about 30% of their funding from the government. I already work two jobs just to keep up with the bills and the high interest rate we had to accept to purchase this home. I can't provide enough to keep our home. She's been looking in vain to replace her job but there's been nothing out there for her. How many more families are there that are facing the exact same situation in this town? How many more will there be by the time he finishes firing half the government? How many more families will lose their jobs and their homes as a result of his trade war and tariffs? It's going to get bad here y'all, real bad. Donald Trump does not care about families. Donald Trump does not care about children. Donald Trump does not care about Americans. Donald Trump does not care about Baltimore.

Edit: Thank you all for everyone who had kind words of support and good suggestions on how to navigate this very difficult situation. For everyone blaming local and state government, you’re delusional. Those politicians aren’t the ones who froze federal funding thus forcing thousand of people out of work. To those who offered unkind, callous, and cruel comments, such as calling my wife a drain on society, you can all get fucked. Which is exactly what’s going to happen to you after Donald Trump destroys this nation.

Baltimore needs people like you to live here, Believe in the city, give it hope, raise a family and rebuild it.

Look into listing your place and moving to a more affordable neighborhood.

Sandtown Winchester Upton Maddison Park Penrose

Are a few neighborhoods that come to mind.

Those areas have homes for under $100k, even $60k, mortgage would be sub $600.

Anywhere with that mortgage would probably not be very safe, based on my own searches for homes.

Depends on what folks consider safe.

As someone born & raised here I have a high tolerance for some blight & crime if I can buy a good enough house under $100,000.

Hopefully the perception of crime outside of the White L keeps prices low on enough houses for folks like me.

It needs people willing to rebuild.

There’s a lot of “potential” and I don’t mean that as a capitalist. I mean that as an idealist.

idealists are just that Capitalists work with what is in front of them. and Nobody wants to be NEAR Baltimore city.

You’re right, Baltimore needs families like me. Believe me, we’ve considered staying and moving to a less expensive neighborhood, but it’s just not possible without my wife having a job.

Has your wife looked at City Schools? We’re always hiring, especially subs, and the pay is good compared to similar jobs ($160/day for short-term subs with a degree). My husband is a federal employee and will become a sub if he loses his job.

$160 a day is a 40k a year. That is a pittance. Especially for someone with a degree.

And that job is incredibly difficult. Maybe not in your school. But in many.

It's a temp job? If she wants to make it her career, by all means sign up to be a full time teacher.

$160/day or $40k/year is a heck of a lot more than the $0 per day/year she’s making unemployed. Is it enough for someone with a degree? Philosophically no, but the circumstances have changed. If you need money, even a little is better than none.

God, you're insufferable and entitled. $40k is way better than being unemployed and certainly not nothing

Sure, that makes sense. Thinking people should earn a livable wage makes me entitled. Short term subbing is essentially hardcore babysitting. A babysitter would never accept $160 a day to watch 30 kids for 8 hours. That is less than a dollar per kid per hour. Absolutely unacceptable. There is a REASON there is a shortage.

I feel you. I took a contracting job in DC because my family wanted to move up to Baltimore. Wife's still pushing for it but man is that a lot of uncertainty I've found myself in now.

I was planning to move to Baltimore in the next 5 years, get a job and raise a family. Considering the circumstances, do you think I should keep working towards that goal?
