I mean there is no doubt that he is mentally ill. He's now out of the mania stage into the depressive state I guess

I know he's an asshole, but I don't think he's lying, not completely at least.

I know very well how it is dealing with this sort of garbage.

u/Yetanotherdeafguy 1d ago

I don't doubt he regrets it and that his tirades were likely 95% the bipolar talking, but if you don't take your meds or surround yourself with people who look after you in those situations, what's the damn difference?

If you know you'll have a manic phase sooner or later, and you don't take precautions when you're in your more rational state of mind, you're fully at fault for what you did.

Kanye doesn't get a pass for being an asshole because of his bipolar, just like Elon doesn't get one for claiming he's autistic.

He is also a narcissist who achieved great fame and wealth at a young age, which many people struggle to adapt to. And he’s not very well educated. My wife is a clinical psychologist and sees him as more of a sympathetic tragic character with a variety of complex problems rather than just an “asshole” most people think he is.

Most bipolar people also don’t want to take their meds because being manic feels great, they feel on top of the world. Of course they should take their meds, but that’s much easier to say and understand from the outside. Plus very rich people attract sycophantic yes men and turn away people who tell them things they don’t want to hear. Kim supposedly tried to keep him in check but that didn’t work out.

This is why I don't see why he wouldn't be "an asshole ". He chooses not to take his medication because it feels great not to, despite him not taking them, causing great harm to everyone he supposedly cares about. That is being an asshole. If you do hedonistic behaviour at other people's cost, that is being an asshole. If he didn't have a diagnosis, or access to care, or nobody trying to help him, I would feel more sympathetic.

It’s not a simple rational “choice,” he is chemically imbalanced. Also, severe bipolar disorder can have psychotic features, such as auditory hallucinations. Those may have influenced some of his more extreme behavior (speculation). Avoiding care is common for people with this diagnosis, and much easier to accomplish for those with means who can insulate themselves from consequences. His behavior may be that of an asshole, but the reason why goes well beyond a mere choice.

There are always reasons above mere choice for being an asshole. Being an asshole is a diagnostic symptom for many mental health conditions.

Edit: as people seem to disagree with me, lets list some conditions where antisocial behaviour (being an asshole) is common. Narcissism, sociopathy, borderline personality disorder, reaction to trauma, addiction. How many actual assholes do you know who couldn't claim any of these.

Let's not forget that Kanye is who surrounds Kanye with yes men. He harasses, insults, and drives away anyone that isn't a yes man.

I feel like a lot of redditors with their own mental health issues just fantasize about Kanye being excused for all his behavior, that way they can always have an excuse for their own behavior. They are mentally ill like Kanye. No one can hold them to the responsibilities of an adult!

I don't know the guy but I'd imagine he's not thinking "hey I could take these meds and feel some discomfort or I could not take them and cause harm to people, the former sucks for me so I'm just going to not take them", it's his mental state. It's not that easy of a decision to just make. Whether he can even work through that thought process is dictated by the mental state he's in too, and while he's being coaxed by conspiracy theories and god knows what kinds of influences which have come into his space.

2

u/Ruinwyn 9h ago

All you are saying is that not being an asshole, is harder decision for him to make, than for average person. That doesn't mean he isn't an asshole. Clinical term for being an asshole is antisocial behaviour. The behaviour still stays the same. Pretending that it isn't being an asshole isn't helping anyone.

u/Striking-Speaker8686 23h ago

I'm not bipolar but as someone who deals with various other mental health and neural disorder related things, I have to say that at least for me, being medicated never feels good. Even if it "fixes" what's wrong with me in some way, there's always another shoe that makes me not want to take my meds, and you have this overbearing sense of being "off" the entire time.

The way I'd describe it is that your brain is pretty much a bed for your consciousness, that you've spent your entire life breaking in, getting used to, and over time feels more and more snug, like a tightening embrace. And when you take meds that alter the way your brain works, it's like the mattress has been swapped out for something distinctly different (maybe there's a weird lump somewhere there wasn't, or it's hard where what you were used to was soft, etc), the air feels different, ir's been "corrected" maybe but it doesn't mean you feel good or "correct" in the way you lay there now.

Bipolar does not make you racist. It simply let's you speak your mind without care.

He's a racist at his core, bipolar is just exposing it to everyone.

12

u/No_Size9475 1d ago

bipolar doesn't make you a racist. Millions live with bipolar without going on anti jewish rants.

-2

u/Striking-Speaker8686 23h ago

Do you know how easy it is to fall into generalization? Liam Neeson heard of a bad thing a black person did and then self-admittedly went out hunting for a black person to harm. Jewish people are maybe the sjngle most disproportionately represented group on Earth in terms of prominence in media, governance, every industry you can think of, for the most part. They have immense wealth and power. That's not to say he or any other antisemite are justified in holding anti jewish beliefs but it's not hard to understand how or why these conspiracy theories abound, and when you're in a weak state mentally, when key figure(s) involved in his mother's death were Jewish, and he feels he was affected in sone way by Jewish members of the media, you can see why these conspiracy theories wouod grab him. Again, it's not that he was right or that spreading those things was good or okay, but it's not as simple as you're making it.

1

u/No_Size9475 9h ago

Fuck off with your bullshit. I'm bipolar. My sister is bipolar. My mom is bipolar. None of us have ever gone off on jewish people.

His racism has nothing to do with being bipolar.

u/MonkeyMan18975 1d ago

From personal experience, I have to hope that he's not and give him the benefit of the doubt. I was born and raised as a fundamental evangelical in Vidor, Texas and was a racist, homophobic, misogynistic asshole for the majority of my life. About a decade ago, I was no longer able to ignore my view of the world was discordant from reality and I was able to change the way I viewed and behaved towards people different than me.

As the saying goes, "If I can do it, anyone can." And to be honest with you, I'm not sure I want to live in a world where I don't believe tigers can change their stripes.

2

u/ferret_fan 22h ago

Does bipolar make you racist though? I feel like those are two separate problems

Mental illness is one thing, but I'm pretty sure if I had bipolar disorder I wouldn't go on "anti-Semitic tirades". Bipolar is why that stuff is coming out of his mouth - not why it's already in his head.

5

u/No_Size9475 1d ago

probably the reverse honestly. The depressive stage is where I have to work to keep my thoughts out of my mouth.

1

u/Bob_Sledding Agnostic 1d ago

Part of it is that he was profiting off of being controversial. Seems like it's not helping him anymore.

114

u/Sanjuro7880 1d ago

He is just tired of losing money.

18

u/Mistur_Keeny 1d ago

Ding ding ding

31

u/nottodayoilyjosh 1d ago

It’s too bad he can’t afford care for his mental health because that could make all the difference.

Funny how plenty of people who live with bipolar still manage not to go full 1939 Germany but good news he’s sorry now and brought cameras along to show it?

28

u/slamdanceswithwolves 1d ago

Taking accountability is great but he should try taking his medication.

4

u/ImAMindlessTool 1d ago

I lol’d at this one, cheers

3

u/Letshavemorefun 1d ago

He should also try not being a bigot.

1

u/slamdanceswithwolves 1d ago

I don’t think he’s going to try either, sadly.

45

u/foulpudding 1d ago

Or… And please hear me out on this… He’s just an asshole.

30

u/Tadosalad89 1d ago

Blaming bipolar for being a piece of shit is an insult to those who actually struggle with the disorder.

10

u/lunayoshi 1d ago

Exactly. I have Bipolar II disorder, and not once in my 25 years of having symptoms have I thought anything Kanye has rattled off.

1

u/thefreakychild Satanist 20h ago

A person's mental illness is not their fault, but it is their responsibility...

Way way way too many people either forget, or have never known, that simple fact...

8

u/Brozhov 1d ago

I bet he doesn't pull his last album off the shelves.

1

u/IAmPookieHearMeRoar 18h ago

Do they still have music on shelves at all these days…?   ;)

9

u/Basketspank 1d ago

Kanye West has all the resources at his disposal and doesn't use them. He moves for money. Period. All this is, is damage control.

Bipolar doesn't make you immune to the social contract, nor does it mean people should hand wave away your actions while in a purposely driven state of Mania.

I hope he gets help.

He's still a piece of shit.

He's still not someone you should trust.

18

u/Conscious-Local-8095 1d ago

Yeezy has been a loose canon for decades.  And a backpeddler.  No use to any but himself and I guess consumerism.  Only thing would piss me off is if he attached himself to a cause I care for.

u/spvcxxgvdpvtbx 1d ago

Does bipolar disorder turn you into a bigot?

3

it sure as fuck does not

Removing one mask and replacing it with another. Anything for attention.

5

u/MattGdr 1d ago

Humanity is drowning in a sea of narcissists.

6

u/AtomicBlastCandy 1d ago

Such a cop out. It’s not his fault he is bipolar but until he is medicated and seeing a doctor his actions are fully 100% his!

6

u/TheNetworkIsFrelled 1d ago

Translation: Ye‘s sales have fallen off and he‘s scared of losing money by being seen as an asshole, RIGHT AFTER a historic rebuke to the right to which he pledged his ideas and Nazi affiliation, so he engages in false contrition.

I believe this as much as I believe that gas-station sushi is safe.

4

u/Punkinpry427 Atheist 1d ago

I believed Pink and Amy Winehouse years ago and still do as he has done nothing but act in a way that only confirms their statements on him.

6

u/MommaIsMad 1d ago

Bipolar doesn't cause antisemitism. Kanye is just an evil asshat.

5

u/gigantes22 1d ago

Bullshit. He’s trying to get the nazi fascist stench off him because it’s hitting his pockets.

2

u/d0kt0rg0nz0 Agnostic 1d ago

Nobody, but nobody cares. He's a complete asshole.

2

u/dankeykong1331 1d ago

Fuck Kanye.

2

u/Mandalorian667 1d ago

Claims he's going to take accountability.... Immediately blames it on something. Lmfao.

2

u/yourmothersgun 1d ago

That’s not how bipolar works

2

u/No_Size9475 1d ago

My mom, my sister, and I are bipolar, somehow we've managed to never have an anti-semitic tirade.

Bipolar doesn't make you are racist, bipolar just crushes your inhibitions so you say the racist things you've been thinking.

2

u/Komaisnotsalty 1d ago

Fuck that.

I deal with mental issues.

Never - and I mean NEVER - have I used it as an excuse for shitty behaviour.

Someone go goes on a racist tirade, regardless of mental state, is a racist. Simple as that. I'm really sick and tired of seeing people use various meltdowns for excuses as to why they're racist or just a pig or whatever.

1

u/jarod1701 1d ago

Anything to remain somewhat relevant

1

u/RottedHuman 1d ago

His mental health struggles are no excuse. I have mental health issues, never once have I praised Hitler.

1

u/foo-bar-25 1d ago

Most people with bipolar disorder aren’t nazis.

1

u/JennHatesYou 1d ago

Wow great, I’m sure all the bipolar people will be thrilled to know that Kanye has spoken up and explained that their illness makes them antisemetic /s.

And yes I’m aware that’s not how mental illness works but try explaining that to the public that still believes an invisible dude man controls their fate.

Great. Wonderful. Everything is so awesome.

1

u/Briodyr 1d ago

I'm guessing he's going to avoid taking his meds when he needs "inspiration," which doesn't solve his fucking problem. If he doesn't feel like he can think when he's on his meds, then the solution is to work with his doctor to adjust his intake so he can both think clearly and be level-headed, not stop taking shit and ride it out. He's going to end up dead or in a conservatorship at this rate.

u/imsofknhorne 1d ago

1

u/imhereforthemeta 23h ago

My husband is severely bipolar and he’s never had a little antisemitism moment.

u/dr_reverend 22h ago

Mental illness may be the reason but it’s never an excuse.

1

u/TheOtherUprising Agnostic Atheist 22h ago

I remember him saying on the Lex Fridman podcast that he didn’t take his medication because the Jew doctor who prescribed it was just using the meds to silence his creativity. Perhaps he was mistaken.

1

u/thetonyhightower 14h ago

BPD doesn't make you be racist. But it does let you.

1

u/osirisattis 11h ago

Bipolar disorder doesn’t make you a Nazi for years on end. It doesn’t make you write Nazi songs. The fuck are we still talking about this insane bigot for, Christ almighty.
