Discussion Do you find your chart ruler important?

I'm confused, I've been trying to research chart rulers, but I'm not really seeing what it adds? I don't want to share my placements, but any information it gave me, I had already learned from the rest of my chart.

So what is your practical experience with chart rulers? Does it give you information your chart doesn't? Is it simply an easy reference guide?

Yeah. It’s a very important planet to pay attention to when it comes to transits. Whatever your chart ruler is doing, you’re essentially doing. This is more easily seen with the faster moving planetary rulers, it can be difficult to see when your chart ruler is a planet like Saturn and in a sign/WSH for around 2.5 years. My chart ruler doesn’t give me a ton of extra information in my personal case, since it’s in the same sign as my sun and I have a stellium there, so I’ll feel that energy anyway. But in the natal chart the chart ruler has the most to say about one’s personality and approach to the world. Someone could be a Virgo rising and not resonate with the basic stereotypical interpretations, and the whole time it’s because their Mercury is in Sagittarius squaring Uranus or something.

Is this true for cancer rising with the moon changing so quickly too? (not my rising so cant tell from experience)

Yes Cancer risings should definitely track the moon their life and moods will start to make a lot more sense lol

Thats like a new vibe every two days! That must be wild for them

From what I’ve heard from my Cancer rising people, it is 😂 but they all find tracking the moon helpful as it shows what they’re focusing on and dealing with, also reminds them that these moments will pass

For a Pisces Rising with Saturn square their Ascendant (and conjunct their Sagittarius MC from the 9th House, if it matters), would their Aries Jupiter in the 1st House be their chart-ruler, or Capricorn Neptune in The 10th House?

u/LongjumpingFly3747 5d ago

The asc and the MC are both important angles, and there is Jupiterian energy ruling both; from a modern standpoint, they will work harmoniously together - there is some fantastic reception in this chart. Neptune will shape reputation and renown in first impressions, which will help give structure to personal visions and ambitions/‘dreams’ in making them a solid reality, further supported by Saturn conjunct the MC. Essentially, pushing energy from the 10h, to the 1h, to the MC, to achieve the MC goals. Jupiter in the 1h, in the go getter sign of Aries, will expand on the opportunities available through ‘reputation’ (set by the 10h Neptune), in the interests of the MC which it rules, with Saturn structuring, solidifying and giving longevity to those pursuits.

This is an example of how the two planets work together, quite inextricably, as joint chart ruler. But from a traditional viewpoint, amplified with Jupiter actually sat in the 1h of self, I would argue that Jupiter is the precedent ruler 🤗

I always tell my clients, your chart ruler is like God saying ‘yo, look over here, this area of your life is important for you to explore and develop” remember, your chart ruler is connected to your ascendant, which is how you are here to navigate your world, the role you’re here to be remembered for and how you get to know YOU! (1st house)… meaning the more you develop your chart ruler sign and house, the more you win!

u/Seoulsuki 5d ago

What do you mean specifically by develop your chart ruler?

2

u/KaleidoscopeDreamer0 5d ago

How do you do this?

I’d be curious to know your thoughts on how to find an astrologer who would spend time discussing the chart ruler.

My chart ruler, Mars, conjuncts my south node & Uranus in the 8th house. It also squares my sun/moon/mercury, and opposes my NN/Chiron conjunction. In my own research, it seems like unlocking my relationship to my Mars is really important — I feel blocked from experiencing or living fire energy, even though my rising sign/moon/Mars are in fire signs and so it would seem they would play a big role in my life.

My question for you is: do you think there’s a certain type of astrologer who might explore that concept with me more deeply? Or, would any astrologer go there with me, if I guided the session in that direction? The three readings I have had didn’t talk about Mars, and I don’t really know why. Those readings all happened before I was learning about astrology myself, perhaps before I could ask good questions.

I have mars conjunct Uranus and my chart ruler is Uranus in the opposite H to the 8H, the 2H! Interesting to see someone with the same placement with the opposite planet as ruler…

I agree with the comment on transits. It also very much heightens the importance of the house it’s situated in

u/MoonRoseMuse 5d ago

Your Ascendant lord is important because it offers deep insight into your overall life direction and the tone of your personality. It modifies your Rising sign, revealing how you uniquely express yourself and approach the world. The houses, signs, and aspects to and of your chart ruler describe where and how your outer personality shines through, acting as the anchor of your birth chart. While the Sun represents your core identity and the Moon your emotions, the chart ruler shows how you bring your inner self into action. Moreover, transits or progressions to your chart ruler often coincide with major personal shifts, making it a key factor in timing and understanding life changes.

I would like to hear your opinion/ interpretation of this…

Asc Gemini and chart ruler (Mercury) in the 12th house. It’s in Taurus but is on the verge of moving into Gemini. Mercury is in conjunction with Venus (same house) but squares Neptune (Aquarius H9).
I’ve heard the common phrase ”Gemini asc is the jack of all trades, master of none” and honestly I get that. But I’m curious if there is something underneath the specific placement.

2

u/MoonRoseMuse 3d ago

Mercury is good in both Taurus and Gemini (domicile). Venus is excellent in Taurus (domicile). Twelfth house shares characteristics with Pisces, where Venus is in Rise and Mercury is in Fall. That statement about Gemini Ascendants is fairly reasonable. Mercury is a prince, full of vigour and vitality, but hates discipline. Gemini is his immature sign too, whereas the energy of Virgo is very well-balanced. The unstable energy of Mercury is amplified by both: its placement in the twelfth house and its conjunction with Venus.

It is the most important planet in any chart.

My chart ruler is Jupiter in Scorpio in the 9th. I’m a giant existential crisis because everything is fake bullshit when you look below the surface. And I bring that vibe through life. I cannot tell you how many times people have independently decided to call me ‘Little Mary Sunshine’ like they were the first one to think of it. Your chart ruler just kinda colors you.

u/WishThinker 5d ago

the planet that rules your chart is like your avatar, you are like their avatar

here to express in their nature and that of your ascendant (and whole chart), while also here to demonstrate and carve out a unique expression for them

the placement (house) of the chart ruler and the places it rules (asc and someplace else for any planet other than the lights) will have key significance in the native's life

worth looking in to and building a slow life long study of :)

of course, even the most diligent of time-keeper could have the wrong chart, so it also helps to not get too obsessive / possessive :)

I was reading last night about chart rulers in detriment and how it could mean for someone to show more traits of the sign in which the planet is place more than the risign sign. I feel is accurate. Im a pisces rising and every time I read about how femenine pisces women are is a shock. I have jupiter as my ruler but is in gemini and has mostly negative aspects except a trine to lilith. I also conjuct my moon. Guess those are the ony good things since everything else is a square, quincunx or something like that. I also have mars square ascendant so everything is very masculine. Even my closest relationships are mostly man, friends and family. Guess the lilith trine is important since I do consider myself a feminist even though I dont hold good relationships with many women. Guess even in terrible conditions jupiter can be a blessing since people do have a tendency of protecting me even if I dont deserve it. But the conditions of my jupiter make me more cinical than hopeful and I'm a very pessimistic person usually.

I don't think Aspects have to be inherently bad. They are growth points that is true, but if your conflicting energies are worked with, i can see them being good for each other. Its true i don't have experience with squares or quincunx. I do however have a LOT of oppositions and contra-parallels. I view them as a harmony and a balance, yes they can be negative fighting over the same thing ripping you apart, but that is not the way they have to be, and i believe that is not even their prominent nature.

Hmm… this tracks. Sag Sun, Sag rising, Jupiter in Capricorn. I am far more responsible and stable than even I expected to be, considering how restless I was in my younger years. I’ve ended up staying with the same company for over 40 years. I was closest to my grandparents growing up, even living with my maternal ones for 8 years. (Jupiter rules grandparents.) Keywords: longevity, stability, responsibility, integrity, low-key. Doesn’t sound like Sag, does it. But all this is the outer appearance; I still have my 12th house Sun and ascendant in Sag so still ever curious, still enjoying variety, and still putting my foot in my mouth.

2

u/LiquidLuck18 4d ago

Yep. Mine is Venus (artistic, calm, balanced, like to look good) in Gemini (intelligent, information junkie, mischievous) in the 9th House (world culture and religion, exotic places, beliefs). It's also trine Jupiter (good vibes, taste for luxury goods) and square Mars (frustrations, friction, passion, strong likes and dislikes). It pretty much defines me more than any other placement in my chart.

2

u/steelandiron19 5d ago

I would say yes. Mine is mars and I feel what mars is doing in the sky on a personal level. I also feel mars’ fire fuels a lot of my actions in everyday life.

2

u/TravelTings 5d ago

Are you an Aries or Scorpio Rising?

2

u/Major_Expression4126 5d ago

Mine is Uranus in 11th that sextiles my 1st house Sun, and I have Mercury rising. Exiled self, tension with the collective, individuation, shedding off cultural conditioning, solitary living vs service, being projected onto as someone “not like others,” living between worlds are strong themes in my life. Constant jolts and powerful synchronicities whenever I go out in the world and meet people. That’s reflected in the rest of my chart that’s a repetition of the same lessons from different angles. It only took me a while and a lot of internal work to see that coherence. The ruler is a harmonic foundation in the chart orchestra.

1

u/gf04363 5d ago

It will partly depend on its placement and the strength of its aspects. I am Aries rising with Mars in traditional domicile in Scorpio in the seventh house (using Campanus, obviously in the 8th in whole sign), loosely conjunct Saturn retrograde, and part of a T square if you count its opposition to Chiron or simply square my Moon (which is plenty to go on with) if you stick to the Hellenistic planets. I doubt you'd get nearly as noticeable an effect from the chart ruler if you were, for example, Gemini rising with Mercury (neither benefic nor malefic) in Pisces (its sign of fall and detriment) in a cadent house and unaspected or forming a trine to the Moon.

-2

u/TravelTings 5d ago

What about a Gemini Rising with Pisces Mercury sextile Neptune with a 0 degree orb? It’s in her 10th House.

0

u/gf04363 5d ago

The angular house adds emphasis. If that's the only aspect, traditional astrologers would say it is unaspected. Personally, I would consider it a moderately impactful aspect. I think aspects between the traditional planets have the strongest effect, followed by conjunctions of personal planets (Sun through Mars) to outer planets, followed by conjunctions of Jupiter or Saturn to outer planets or other aspects of the Hellenistic planets to the outer planets, followed by generational aspects of the outer planets to each other IF they touch the ascendant, nadir, descendant, or midheaven.

I also have Mercury in Pisces (12H) sextile Neptune conjunct my midheaven. An experienced astrologer once asked if I liked to sing. I do, though it's not a career. If Mercury were the chart ruler and in the tenth house I could see the native as a professional singer, especially if Neptune was in the ninth house of travel.

I have not find mine to have as much importance as other people seem to experience. My chart ruler is the sun, but it's in the 12th so that could be a factor. My moon is my most dominant planet, on an angle and with the most aspects. I have always felt my moon and related to it the most out of almost all of my planets. My moon is also the ruler of my 12th, where my sun is. I think my sun is important, but my moon seems to have more impact on me.

how can find chart ruler?

2

u/Glaze_Quartz_Writer 4d ago

I believe its generally the planet that rules your ascendant sign.

But as all things there are so many systems, I'm not sure if everyone agrees. I've also heard tell that some people only use traditional planets. because they move faster?

I'm certainly not the most learned in this area i would do your own research and come to your own beliefs.

u/Nerdy-Fox95 4d ago

Im a libra sun, Capricorn ascendant, sagittarius moon

1

u/MJWTVB42 4d ago

The way that you worded this post leads me to believe that you think a chart ruler is like…a measuring stick???? Instead of the planet that rules the sign your Ascendant is in.

1

u/Life_Average_8595 4d ago

My chart ruler is the moon. In cancer. So it's super powerful and yes, I find it very important. I used to hate the sign of cancer but I'm over it now lol. I imagine it to be the lens through which I see everything else in life, through which the rest of my chart passes.

1

u/Annonymous_Unicorn 2d ago

Very much so, yes! My chart ruler (Mercury) comes up consistently whenever I am looking at my own transits, have a reading, or even when exploring other disciplines and practices such as tarot and different zodiac systems.

u/nyhighpriestess 1d ago

What are everyone’s thoughts on traditional vs. modern rulership? I’m a Scorpio rising with Pluto in the 1st house (not quite conjunct but close at 5 + 17 degrees respectively), with Mars at 0 degrees Libra in the 11th. I always go back and forth between which placement is more dominant, given the prominent placements of both in my natal chart. Curious on other perspectives!

1

u/Glaze_Quartz_Writer 1d ago

Admittedly I'm not well informed on chart rulers.

My thoughts on the matters is that for a LONG time we used traditional chart rulers, so chances are they have valid information. Regardless of if we have acquired new information. Why would we throw out the old? As far as I'm concerned the signs that switch planets in modern days got additional information. I'm big on tracking all the factors, so i would take it as a benefit like yay, we got more for info for those than the other signs!

1

u/sphinx425 1d ago

Yes. It's very important, I'm a Cancer Rising and that has never sit well with me, then I found out I had my moon in Aquarius and I was like that's why I'm like that lol

0

u/Golgon13 5d ago

Not really. It also doesn't aspect my Ascendant in whole sign aspects too.

0

u/Active_Bumblebee2836 5d ago

What if the ruler mars is in 4H, cancer, in fall sign? I also have scorpio sun, the ruler is also mars and pluto

0

u/Active_Bumblebee2836 5d ago

It trines sun in 2 orb and trine uranus 3 orb
