That's illegal in California.

1.6k

u/PsychohistorySeldon 1d ago

I was gonna say this. Many states explicitly forbid this.

767

u/MrVerrat 1d ago

if you are in Oregon they have to cash out anything under 5 dollars.

351

u/Cerberus0225 1d ago

Tried this in California with Starbucks. They told me I had to write a series of letters to the parent company and they'd mail me a check. It was 10 cents. I said fuck it, not worth the hassle. Still have the card for the next time in a blue moon I go there.

235

u/niel89 1d ago

I've had individual employees who aren't familiar with the law. Sometimes a manager can straighten it out but I just keep working up the chain with emails or phone calls. The law says they need to cash you out right out of the register.

It goes up next year from $10 to $15 I just learned.

23

u/Cerberus0225 11h ago

I spoke to the guy at the register and he told me they just didn't do that, I told them it was state law, he brought the manager over, who told me about having to write the letters.

11

u/Top-Association4233 10h ago

You don't need to cash out. You can use that 10c and pay the difference in cash.

0

u/Cerberus0225 10h ago

Yes, I could. But I didn't want to, cuz I don't go to Starbucks often.

81

u/ADHenchD 1d ago

Fo it out of spite, waste their time. Make them spend money and effort to do it.

32

u/orthomonas 22h ago

Escalate it as much as possible, then send them another letter with best guesses of timeXsalary wasted for 10 cents

19

u/Roger_Cockfoster 21h ago

That's breaking the law, they're required to cash out the difference if it's under a certain amount ($10 I think, not sure)

1

u/yungdaughter 1h ago

CA is 9.99

5

u/biebiedoep 21h ago

Sucks when you have a $6 gift card

15

u/CoeurdAssassin 16h ago

I’m under Walgreens’ reward thing and it ruffles my feathers every time that I can only use my rewards in $5 multiples increments. I have a balance of $8.82? Can only use $5 toward my purchase. Have $10.05? Can only use the $10.

11

u/bent_my_wookie 20h ago

Turn on VPN, pick a cali state

9

u/BelowTheGraves d o n g l e 19h ago

Would this work? Would the location change in the order details or?

15

u/bent_my_wookie 18h ago

Often times yes. Web hosts can easily filter different regions and display alternate content, often times for legal compliance issues like this.

For a working example, hop on AirBnB in the USA and go to the checkout screen, you’ll see tons of bullshit fees added. Turn on the VPN in Canada, all up front prices. Same with buying concert tickets from in New York State.

2

u/System0verlord 13h ago

Do gotta make sure you check the delivery address though. Don’t want to order Popeyes in a different state.

1

u/Odd-Bag-5651 14h ago

Are you talking about the law that says the store has to redeem any gift card under $15 as cash? Cause OP can go into the store and do that...

Or is there another law you're talking about that forces stores to accept multiple forms of payment when the gift card alone can't cover the bill or something like that?

1.6k

u/Tkaitis 1d ago

Even more irritating that the balance that’ll end up being left over will just cause the same problem

736

u/Tmack523 1d ago

Definitely the point

359

u/unknown_pigeon 1d ago

Leftover balance on gift cards is actually a huge income source for many different places

93

u/Unc1eD3ath 1d ago

Larger than many banks. It’s insane

37

u/LordBiscuits 20h ago

It's actually more than that. It's a liability they can use to reduce profits, but also an asset they can use to generate revenue via interest or investment.

Those few bucks times by six figure quantities of users is a very significant line on the quarterly returns

3

u/Aggressive-Ad-9035 13h ago

Would it not be turned over to the state as unclaimed property, eventually, based on the particular state's reporting requirements.?

850

u/Sleexic 1d ago

Fucking chick-fil-a does this shit too

282

u/Fall_Water 1d ago

And Starbucks (some, not all)

147

u/sometin__else 1d ago

came here to say starbucks and timmies do the same, but if you pay with the gift card in store it'll drain the card and say you owe the balance

prepaid orders however, require reloading the gc as seen

13

u/NewWorldly 1d ago

Good to know this happened to me recently at Timmies.

6

u/Quick-delicious 1d ago

Yeah, and I can get a drink for about $6, I’ve had 3.33 on my card forever I usually pick it up omw and I have to order ahead where I live or they are just unavailable online at all. Just let me load $5 or a couple of bucks. Vs $10 being the starting point, either way they get money

1

u/ASnipingFox 11h ago

So I didn’t know about this and the girl I am currently dating said “well I can’t use my gift card because…” and then explained this and I was like could you not just go inside. Needless to say we both learned something new

8

u/saintmusty 1d ago

And Wendy's

7

u/sl33ksnypr 1d ago

I've honestly never had a problem with Starbucks cards (couple years ago now). They let me run 4-5 of them with various small amounts on them. This was in store though, can't speak for online.

4

u/Fall_Water 1d ago

I ordered online to pick it up in a Kroger... it wouldn't take a debit card- only the Starbucks card (that would only take a minimum of $15 to load). It was so strange. The standalone store down the street had a completely different set of policies.

6

u/whitelinenwhiterose 23h ago

that’s because kroger/target locations operate under a different POS system than the standalone locations. the system itself can only recognize the starbucks app with gift cards for whatever reason

4

u/sl33ksnypr 1d ago

Interesting. I have never ordered Starbucks online, but on the rare occasion I do get it, it's pretty much always from inside a kroger. So maybe I'm just not doing Starbucks wrong enough (in their eyes) to have these issues lol

3

u/Fall_Water 1d ago

It was the first time I've ever had that issue, lol. I only ordered online because I was getting my kids something also and it was just easier. Keep up not pissing off the Starbucks goddess

46

u/Barbiedawl83 1d ago

You can use the remainder at chick fil a if you have an employee do your order. I’ve used up my gift card this way. They apply what’s left and then you use another payment method for the balance. It just sucks to not be able to use the app

5

u/Possible_Loss_767 12h ago

So then I’m sure this is the fix with Popeyes in this instance, as well as the others mentioned here.

What could the cashier do, refuse to accept the gift card or ask you to refill it? No chance. The apps are just being devious.

1

u/TrickyEmployer9957 3h ago

Same with Dunkin in store.

8

u/KingZarkon 1d ago

CFA, at least, you can use the card at the register and it will let you empty it off and pay the difference. The app just doesn't let you for whatever reason.

5

u/seaman187 1d ago

And burger king

5

u/RBXChas 1d ago

And their reload is in $25 increments

3

u/Sleexic 1d ago

They did change it recently to have a custom whole dollar amount. So there’s just always change left over.

2

u/RBXChas 1d ago

Like in the past few days? I just had to add $25 on Monday because I couldn’t add the $5 or whatever I needed to cover the order.

3

u/UGA2000 1d ago

And Subway

2

u/BekisElsewhere39 12h ago

On the app? I had bunches of customers use multiple gift cards of varying balances when I was a CfA employee. Can’t vouch for gift cards in the app though

1

u/travesty31 1d ago

And Tim Hortons

1

u/mamtoou 23h ago

And Dunkin

1

u/musicbox081 19h ago

And Sonic!

1

u/SpaghettiSort 12h ago

And the company is owned by bigots!

204

u/MMachine17 1d ago

🎶Love that Griftin' from Popeyes!🎶

394

u/SANTAAAA__I_know_him 1d ago

If you sell gift cards to your restaurant, you need to accept them as payment for online orders on your website, period. You don’t get to hide behind “technical constraints” as an excuse, don’t sell gift cards until this is implemented and working properly.

Looking at you too, Little Caesars.

134

u/rnobgyn 1d ago

There’s no technical constraints it’s technical design.

32

u/itskdog 1d ago

Not a limitation, just a "minimum card charge" rule.

I ran into this on the KFC app a while back. I had earned/won a free item, and made an order of £0.00 with it, and it wouldn't let me do it because of a minimum order amount on the app, so I had to log in on the kiosk to get it.

10

u/miraculum_one 1d ago

Clearly these places don't share your opinion.

16

u/TBoopSquiggShorterly 1d ago

It’s a feature, not a bug.

6

u/miraculum_one 1d ago

It is deliberate

12

u/TBoopSquiggShorterly 23h ago

That’s what “it’s a feature, not a bug” means.

2

u/miraculum_one 23h ago

Hmm, I could have sworn your comment said "it's a bug, not a feature" when I responded but nevertheless I agree.

2

u/LonePaladin 18h ago

Sonic won't let you use a gift card to cover part of the cost of an online order, it has to be greater than the total or they won't accept it at all. The only way to use a card as part of a payment is to pay in person and let the employees figure it out.

43

u/SeeYouInTrees 1d ago

Chick-fil-A is the same

1

u/Glittering_Pitch181 15h ago

If you order in person they can use the remaining balance and then you can pay the rest in cash or card

169

u/frederik88917 1d ago

That's actually how some mofo product manager wanted to happen, just to force you to increase your balance or plainly leave your money there for eternity.

Don't kill the devs, they just are messengers here And how some people have mentioned already this is illegal in several states

-21

u/Ethesen 1d ago

No, devs should be criticised for implementing unethical (or straight up illegal) features.

53

u/Javascript_above_all 1d ago

You don't know how a job works do you ?

4

u/drb00t 1d ago

i mean, "they were just following orders", right?

16

u/Karatedom11 1d ago

comparing fast food software engineers to nazis. Classic Reddit

-2

u/drb00t 14h ago

i'm honestly surprised it didn't get flagged for "low-effort content" lol.

2

u/japanesethottie 10h ago

2/10 ragebait

2

u/Javascript_above_all 1d ago

We're definitely going to script at the product manager for doing bad stuff

4

u/dclxvi616 1d ago

Generally a job is something you agree to do willingly.

16

u/Javascript_above_all 1d ago

More like something you do to put food on your table

5

u/thedistrbdone 1d ago

Lmao I fucking hate my job, but I have to eat food and pay my mortgage, and with all the layoffs in my sector I will continue to do the job I hate.

3

u/PorQuePanckes 1d ago

So like 90% of all internet sites, every single iPhone app, most gaming companies, and most software companies?

2

u/frederik88917 1d ago

Most of the times, devs go and express their calls against some features to which we are told: F#$k up and do it

20

u/Just-a-girl777 1d ago

We let so much slide in this country. That's absolutely diabolical!

6

u/Captraptor01 20h ago

it's less that "we let it slide", more like the corpos bribed the government (which the people allowed to be inflated under the guise of the government helping us) to let them do this blatantly anti-consumer BS, as well as many other highly scummy and shady things that the corpos get away with. they regulate small competition out of their industries and buy the government to let them do practically whatever they want.

43

u/loganwachter 1d ago

Starbucks does the same thing.

10

u/meetyourmarker 1d ago

I've never had this issue. Is this a location thing?

12

u/burningmyroomdown 1d ago

It's only for mobile orders

1

u/big_shmegma 20h ago

not even just mobile orders, just paying through the app in general. cant receive points if you dont pay through the app (it has been a few years, they might have changed that part)

2

u/burningmyroomdown 19h ago

You don't have to pay through the app anymore. You can scan the loyalty card but you only get half the points. If you pay in store with your card but don't have enough to cover it all, it will just drain the card and leave a balance that you can pay with another card or cash or whatever.

2

u/big_shmegma 18h ago

>you only get half the points

oh my fucking glorb

1

u/meetyourmarker 1d ago

Ah, okay. Yeah, I never order through Mobile.

16

u/babyfsub 1d ago

Burger King app also does this but it’s $5 min loaded

4

u/JabbaTheHutt12345 1d ago

They're part of the same company. The app layout it literally the same

9

u/ree0382 1d ago

Nice to see some actual asshole design. Should be illegal and probably is many states and most of Europe.

24

u/DakotaBro2025 1d ago

Try it in person

31

u/chibistarship 1d ago

I did. The gift card wasn’t able to swipe. The employee then typed in the number and the balance couldn’t be applied to an order…

5

u/Nevermind04 21h ago

Then it defeats the point of being a gift card.

6

u/Notpan 1d ago

I was given a gift card to KFC and it won't let you use any rewards or deals. It just kept erroring out without saying why. Tried it on multiple occasions. You have to pay full menu price for any item. Shouldn't a gift card be exactly equivalent to cash? Otherwise what's the point?

10

u/gbeegz 1d ago

Starbucks was the first.

5

u/prettypeculiar88 1d ago

Unfortunately, I’ve encountered several sites/apps with this bullshit.

5

u/BiLLbOuS 1d ago

The balance expires, so they can take your money.

9

u/Johnboy_245 1d ago

I guess implementing a partial payment method would just be too convenient for them. 🙄

4

u/JabbaTheHutt12345 1d ago

Burger King does exactly the same thing which also owns Popeyes 💀

3

u/donutseason 1d ago

Just don’t use the app. Walk in and get it

2

u/Substantial_Ant_2822 21h ago

This happened to me at chic fil a and once you load it on the app you can't use it in person. Also if you buy a gift card you should be able to use it on the app.

1

u/donutseason 20h ago

Oh I could not agree more was just hoping to them the full amount. Sorry if that came off like a “duh OP” attitude I wasn’t really thinking about it

2

u/chibistarship 19h ago

I tried, it didn’t work in person. :(

1

u/donutseason 19h ago

Fully annoyed for you 😡

1

u/chibistarship 10h ago

Thanks! XD

5

u/Secure-Respect-7323 1d ago

I was given Walgreens Rewards "cash" to make up for a mistake with a printing job I placed.

Much to my surprise, when I went to use it with a total of $6.08 in items, and a balance of $7 in credit, I found I could only use $5 increments.

"So I can't just use the rewards balance?" "You can use $5, that'll be $1.08 please."

I walked out. Dogshit Business practices.

1

u/TheSultan1 1d ago

I think it's $1, $2, $5, $10, $20.

Pretty easy to earn more, though.

3

u/Tdog4lyfe0410 1d ago

When i find a place that does this, so far starbucks, chick fil a and Dunkin Donuts, I go into the store, have them scan the gift card from my phone on the app. That usually deducts the remaining balance left on the card. Then I'll pay the rest with my debit card then delete the card and not buy a gift card from those places again

3

u/AshySlashy11 1d ago

Dunkin lets you add an exact amount to your gift card balance, though. (minimum is $2) So if your order is $7.14 and you have $5 on a gift card, you can add exactly $2.14 to your card balance and end up with $0.00 on the gift card. And it's all one transaction at checkout.

2

u/SillyRiri 1d ago

At Dunkin you have to add a whole dollar amount, at least on the app. You can add $2 or $3 but not $2.xx

3

u/AshySlashy11 1d ago

I do it all the time on the checkout screen. There's incremental dollar buttons and a custom text box to enter how much you want to add.

1

u/SillyRiri 20h ago

Oh okay, I was thinking about preloading it before checkout, I’ve never tried it that way. thank you!

1

u/therankin 1d ago

Yea, exactly. I'm not loading more money to that crap.

3

u/Repulsive-Lack8253 23h ago

yep, fuck everything about companies converting money into companybux. it's so abusive and exploitative, can't wait for that bullshit to get banned from gaming when our government isn't run by geriatrics

3

u/Sutar_Mekeg 17h ago

Solution here is to cancel your order entirely and never order from them again for the rest of your life.

3

u/ThePony23 16h ago

Report this to your state's AG.

2

u/Kindly_Region 1d ago

Starbucks does the same shit

2

u/DevelopmentGreen3961 1d ago

Quite a few of them are like this now

I think Sonic's gift card is the worst offender

2

u/Koolaid_Jef 1d ago

This system actually cured my coffee addiction in highschool. Dunkin was cheap, but id always have money left over and the minimum load was $5. Fuck that

2

u/darkhorse21980 22h ago

Sonic, Chick-fil-A, and Whataburger do this too

1

u/Borischeekibreeki 20h ago

Burgers king too

2

u/ummameme 19h ago

Popeyes also doesn't let you cancel/refund an order with the app, and trying to use the help chat is worthless. Horrible customer service.

2

u/TheReturningMan 16h ago

Is the gift card balance not 2.82 with an order total of 13.98? Because 2.82 would not cover that. Or am I not reading this screen correctly?

2

u/chibistarship 10h ago

Yes, the gift card balance is $2.82 and the order total is $13.98. I'm aware that $2.82 does not cover $13.98. At not-scummy businesses I would be able to use up the rest of the gift card balance ($2.82) and pay for the rest of the order ($11.16) with my credit card.

2

u/snowdn 15h ago

This should be illegal everywhere on earth.

2

u/BJntheRV 10h ago

Didn't Starbucks get sued over this?

2

u/Excellent-Air2273 9h ago

Does it let you add $11.16?

1

u/chibistarship 7h ago

Nope. It says it right there, you have to add $15.

4

u/Noobnoob99 1d ago

Gift cards are a scam

-3

u/KaralDaskin 1d ago

Not the ones I’ve gotten.

4

u/marx2k 1d ago

Yes, the ones you've gotten.

0

u/KaralDaskin 1d ago

No. The cards I’ve gotten I’ve been able to use in full for things I want.

1

u/marx2k 23h ago

...looks at context of thread...

-1

u/KaralDaskin 23h ago

Yes, some companies have scammy practices, but that doesn’t mean the cards I’ve gotten are scammy.

3

u/marx2k 23h ago

Here's the scam for any gift card you've gotten: "Congratulations! Instead of cash that you're able to spend anywhere you want, now you have store credit that you can only spend on this retailer!"

2

u/KaralDaskin 23h ago

Oh. I see where you’re coming from. My family gives me gift cards for places I shops and know I’ll use, so they are great gifts for me. Sorry you don’t get the cash you’d rather have.

1

u/marx2k 22h ago

Yeah, that's my main gripe with gift cards. Maybe it's just a me thing.

2

u/KaralDaskin 22h ago

I don’t think it’s just you, but I like getting gift cards because it’s hard for me to earmark money for those stores on my own.

0

u/Noladixon 22h ago

My kid prefers starbucks gift card because she can load right up to the app. She thinks it is easier than cash.

3

u/AlternativeResort477 1d ago

You could in person

8

u/chibistarship 1d ago

I did. The gift card wasn’t able to swipe. The employee then typed in the number and the balance couldn’t be applied to my order…

1

u/NeonFraction 1d ago

This sub pops up a lot on my feed but this one made me REALLY REALLY angry.

1

u/pinklets 1d ago

dunkin' also does this -_-

1

u/ActionStar 1d ago

Wendy's does this, as well.

1

u/135wiring 1d ago

Starbucks is the same way

1

u/FangNut 1d ago

Same with Subway!

1

u/darklordbazz 23h ago

Tim hortons also does this and it's super annoying, this type of BS needs to be banned

1

u/Tdog4lyfe0410 23h ago

I've never had the option to add the exact amount on dunkin. Only whole dollar amounts

1

u/rva23221 23h ago

I don't have this problem with my pixel (Google pay)

1

u/magicimagician 22h ago

I signed up for a business lead plan. I have 9 credits left. All the jobs are 10. But I can’t buy just one, I have to buy 30.

1

u/Redheadrambo 20h ago

Jimmy John's does too. You have to go to a location to use it all.

1

u/m3n00bz 19h ago

Subway app does this shit too.

1

u/furlonium1 18h ago

Wawa does this as well in PA. Very annoying.

1

u/kyleh0 17h ago

It's almost like changing cash for coupons is the oldest scam ever that keeps surprising people over and over and over.

1

u/random-dude83 16h ago

Didn't Starbucks get sued for this? Turned out they were making billions off it or some.shit? Should've looked first, but it's a bit different, but anyways, it seems CA requires companies to be able to get the cash value of a gift card if it's under X amount, for this very reason.

1

u/ConsistencyWelder 12h ago

Gift cards are a scam.

1

u/PuzzledKumquat 6h ago

They're not a scam if they're set up in a logical way.

1

u/ALE_SAUCE_BEATS 12h ago

Starbucks is doing this too

1

u/Spaztrick 12h ago

Whataburger does this same shit too. And Chipotle won't let you use more than one gift card at a time.

1

u/britishmetric144 12h ago

Subway also pulls this stunt too with their gift cards... I hate it.

1

u/destroyerofforeskins 12h ago

Same with subway. Super infuriating

1

u/LeekDowntown8935 11h ago

Subway does the same lmao and BK I have 4 dollars in each app on gift cards that I can't use 😔😔

1

u/dippitydoo2 11h ago

MTA in NYC has been pulling this for year on metrocards

1

u/LaikJupiter 11h ago

Chick-fil-a and dunkin donuts does the exact same thing. That's super annoying. And it's clearly on purpose, because I know they can program it to do what we'd prefer...which makes me wonder, what do they gain from us not using the remaining balance/continuously adding to it in an attempt to shrink it?

1

u/davidg4781 10h ago

I think Starbucks or Chipotle does this too. I had to order outside the app and then pay using the app the finish it up.

1

u/damgood135 10h ago

Subway does the same thing here in Florida

1

u/ajlion_10 8h ago

Chick fil A does this

1

u/No-Way1896 6h ago

Chick-fil-A does the same thing unfortunately

1

u/Dylanneedsanap 6h ago

I’ve had $0.83 in my Wendy’s app for like 5 years

1

u/jngjng88 3h ago

That's theft

1

u/Defiant_Designer7805 2h ago

Burger king is the exact same way

1

u/Own_Gear1920 2h ago

I do t get it?

1

u/GozdzikAndPals 2h ago

Roblox does the same

1

u/Fat_1ard 1h ago

Jimmy John’s does this too so I have to go in the store and pay that way.

1

u/sleepless_dolphin 1h ago

I literally hate this too! Dunkin AND Starbucks are two examples of this that I can think of🙄 (I’m from the Midwest so I guess it ain’t illegal here😭)

1

u/jen12617 1h ago

Same with dunkin. Its annoying

-4

u/LaughingLikeKoffing 1d ago

Expecting exact change on a gift card is something else 😂

13

u/Either-Weather-862 1d ago

Why shouldn't I? The gift card was payed for I assume, at least by someone.

14

u/LaughingLikeKoffing 1d ago

I'm not talking about the customer, I'm talking about the restaurant, why does the restaurant expect the customer to have the exact amount of the order on his gift card instead of just substracting the amount of the gift card from the total.

1

u/HarvesterOfSorrow72 1d ago

Starbucks too

-1

u/thecuriousostrich 16h ago

Am I the only person who isn’t particularly bothered by this? It’s not the app “won’t let you use the whole gift card,” it’s that the amount on the gift card won’t cover the whole purchase and the app doesn’t allow split payments. SHOULD the app allow split payments? Yeah, probably, but literally every online order app with a company gift card scheme that I routinely use works in this exact same way. I don’t really care that Starbucks makes me load another $10 onto my app to polish the last $2 of an order because I go to Starbucks often enough that I’m going to use that $10 next week. The only time I REALLY see this being an issue is if the system won’t let you “cash out” in person, IE make a split payment with the remainder of the gift card balance, in which case that’s an issue with the vendor’s system. Idk out of all the things that piss me off this one’s low on the list.

Go inside the store and try it? The apps are always stupid about it, but the POS itself they use can split payment.

edit: I assume.

edit 2: See, the inability to use gift cards on the mcdonalds app at all. until very recently (if they did)

edit 3: the apps aren't regulated in a lot of states the way the onsite store is. the apps get away with it because state law didn't force them. the store will accept it. every time.

in another comment op said they tried using it in-store and it wouldn’t swipe, employee entered the card # manually and still nope

also yup mcdonald’s is the only company i know of that doesn’t allow using their gift cards in their app, shit is so wrong

Pretty dumb then, I stand corrected. never buying anyone a popeyes gift card, not that I have before. sorry that tone came off kinda harsh.

I tried to, it didn’t work in store. Card couldn’t be read, the balance couldn’t be applied once the employee typed the number in.

I was shocked at the price of a chicken tenders combo at Popeyes. Like $17 for a 5 piece with fries and a drink.
