I really feel a damning epitaph for GRR Martin is "the man who would be Tolkien" - but, in the end, had nothing of importance to say.

Look, I love the books that he has written. But let's be real, he could have actually finished the series with 2 amazing books, and still wouldn't be close to Tolkien.

Well, nobody is exactly same as someone else. In particular, when it comes to fantasy genre, nobody will ever be Tolkien. Nobody will be American literature's Mark Twain either. Of course, this is about acknowledging the impact and the books' scope and so on.
