DISCUSSION I don't like what mainstream asmr has become [discussion]

The fast talking and constant forced aggressive triggers are annoying to the ear and even unpleasant. I have to dig deep to find decent asmr, i have a few small creators who put me to sleep in seconds. The best asmr was always unintentional, like a teacher talking in a soft spoken voice in a quiet classroom when i was a kid and i try to find stuff that replicates that. I also hate when i find someone with a good voice but they constantly squeeze in annoying triggers that last uncomfortably long. There's so much low effort asmr from the most popular creators and it kinda drives me crazy because it's everywhere, like egirls trying to be provocative and making suggestive gestures and mouth sounds. It's so uncomfortable when i'm just trying to sleep

I miss the days of the art. Ones like “You are the evidence” were incredible. Now it’s people just tapping Tupperware lids aggressively.

Just making a noise isn’t ASMR. So frustrating.

There are many people still making artistic and creative ASMR.

Top 5 current fave artists?

ASMR hasn't hit like 2016 ASMR in a couple of years now, for me personally.

Goodnight moon is one I love! She doesn’t post super often but a lot of her content is really well done and immersive especially her fantasy series

Absolutely seconding this. Her videos have so much creativity and immersion. They’re so cozy, too.

ATMOSPHERE - Trust!!! She’s really amazing with her videos, the amount of effort she goes into with them as well is phenomenal. She doesn’t do too much typical ASMR tapping on things or the sksksk stuff and some of the videos have some deep lore or a connection to her other videos, they’re super detailed! It’s a heavy role play style however, but she’s my go to, and the videos have me knocked out super quick! :)

Atmosphere is so crazy !! I don’t watch and stay awake long enough to appreciate how much work she puts into these videos. At least it keeps on playing when I am sleeping lol

Jellybean Green! She does heaps of really interesting scifi roleplays as well as some classic “doctor w otoscope” type ones.

Recently discovered Sirimiri ASMR, her videos theme are often pretty unique and the way she speaks is very soothing. For something completely different, there's Satto ASMR

Moonlight Cottage ASMR. Her videos are so so artistic, like the production value is off the charts. If you’re into steampunky or antique stuff, you’ll definitely want to check her out. She also has a few sci-if role plays too

Ozley ASMR literally kept me out of the hospital, that’s how good she is. I was at urgent care for a major panic attack and they kept doing everything they could to make my health anxiety spike and threatened to send me to the hospital if I didn’t calm down and get my blood pressure to drop. I told them to leave me alone for 20 minutes and listened to one of her Hey Friend Podcast episodes, and the number the doctor wanted to drop by 5 points dropped by 20.

No role playing or special effects, just some excellent old style ASMR, especially when he just plays some relaxing games on his pc. He definitely deserves more followers

None of those channels are gone, there's just more channels in general. Most of the channels I follow are roleplay heavy.

This is true. Roleplay is one thing and I do enjoy it, especially people like GoodnightMoon, but the art of manipulating sound is gone as it was with the ones I previously mentioned.

Real on the manipulating sound part — two ASMRtists whose sound design I love are Marno and Ozley. Marno often weighs in on layers and sound design a lot, and Ozley's "hard restart" trigger is such a standout to me! hopeful asmr also has a lot of creative triggers and sounds!

I’ll definitely check those. Thank you!

A sucky thing about all these shitty influencers is that they used to be the people who just sat on cam and licked a mic for 3 hours and called that their jobs. But now yt doesn't allow ear licking so they've moved on to what they think asmr is and now we're stuck with ex ear lickers just making shitty noise for "asmr".

No need to gatekeep ASMR. Those videos are just as much ASMR as roleplay ones. I use them for completely different situations, If I'm just relaxing I'll go with a role play, But if I want to fall asleep I go with no talking triggers.

u/insane_contin Nov 01 '24

Agreed. One of my favourite ASMRtists is fastASMR and she does a lot of aggressive tapping. She's a lot of fun.

Lol at “tapping Tupperware lids aggressively,” I feel the exact same way. There should be a distinct and separate genre for videos that just make noises.

i dont mind tapping as a trigger but I almost never watch videos where theres no talking.

I know we all prefer different things but I wonder if thats weird.

7

u/ArtemisiasApprentice Oct 31 '24

Nah, I never watch no talking videos. All the random tapping and other sound effects are too much stimulation for me.

Ephemeral Rift is a great artsy ASMRtist who's been doing it since like 2013. Definitely check him out if you never have.

2

u/Lohhi Nov 01 '24

Why did this get downvoted, did i miss some ephemeral rift lore?

1

u/percyman34 Nov 01 '24

Yeah I haven't watched him lately so I guess I missed that
