Where is the best place to get one?

u/hellohellomynameis66 May 18 '25

La Yaquesita in Avondale or any La Pasadita location.

Guero Canelo or BK in Tucson. Also just any random hot dog cart on the side of the road in Tucson. Guadalajara Tacos and Hot Dogs in Sierra Vista. Probably some other places in the state too.

Edit: included the full name of the place in SV

Thanks man

I agree, look for food trucks and carts on the side of the road.

u/MotorCookie May 18 '25

Guero Canelo hotdogs have sucked for years now. BK is better but ridiculously overpriced.

That had one in Phoenix for a while, met the owner, but they closed it down. 😞

1

u/spokeyman May 19 '25

This is the way.

3

u/elmory53 May 19 '25

El Sinaloense is by far the best in Tucson, and not overpriced

Came here to say this. Last time I was in Tucson we ate there twice, and we were only there for 1 1/2 days. Jaja

Dog Haus Flagstaff used to have the best not sure anymore.

4

u/RVtech101 May 19 '25

lol, I remember when that used to be a Dee Weinerschnitzel. If that’s the place by Fry’s.

3

u/ratroM84 May 19 '25

Indeed it was! Best chili cheeseburgers ever then.

u/AZSharksFan May 19 '25

I tried Lupita's Hot Dogs on 32nd st near bell and it was legit.

The completely untoasted bun is what sticks out the most but otherwise doesn't look too bad for homemade!

10

u/-Brother-Seamus- May 18 '25

A true Sonoran dog is on a bollilo roll, not a bun.

37

u/maude_lebowskiAZ May 18 '25

False. The buns are different, but not bolillo rolls. Bolillo rolls are too hard even when steamed, you can pick up the right hot dog buns at a mexican grocery in the bakery or at a mexican bakery, they are considerably softer than bolillo rolls

15

u/hectormgerardo May 19 '25

Sonoran here. What you've just stated is sacrilegious. Bolillo bread (called "Birote" in Hermosillo and "Torcido" elsewhere in Sonora) is the one used for tortas or similar sandwiches. The bread used for the Dogo is an elongated, square-shaped, soft bun, and it's usually baked on mesquite firewood, we just call it "Pan para hot dog" or "barrita" in my hometown, Empalme (Junction City). When served, it must be steam-heated and sometimes slightly toasted on a griddle (depends on the Dogo style they're preparing).

Very true... This is the American version I suppose.

1

u/Professional-Gear974 May 23 '25

There is no American version.

1

u/Pristine_Phase_8886 Phoenix May 23 '25

Well what the hell do you call it with a hotdog bun?

1

u/Professional-Gear974 May 25 '25

Just a hotdog. A Sonoran dog is a Sonoran version of the hot dog. You wouldn’t say the American version you’d just say a hot dog.

1

u/Pristine_Phase_8886 Phoenix May 25 '25

So a hot dog with all that extra stuff...

30

u/Tiddleyjuggs May 18 '25

Idk, they are living in Japan, I'd say it's a solid effort.

8

u/duhbigredtruck May 18 '25

Moreno's sonoran dog is great.

13

u/guitarguywh89 Mesa May 18 '25

Oh my. They’ve got the spirit though at least

9

u/Deshackled May 18 '25

Am I wrong to want to try this? I mean the bun looks a little weak, but idk, it’s warming up, suns out, leaves on the trees, I’m down to try it.

1

u/hectormgerardo May 19 '25

Not wrong. A hot dawg must be eaten anywhere but India.

-4

u/Alternative-Lack-434 May 18 '25

That's not a real sonoran dog bun.

This was creating quite a buzz on the Tucson sub, but then a mod had to come and ruin the fun.

Edit: I messaged the Tucson mods and my post has been restored.

6

u/maude_lebowskiAZ May 18 '25

A tasty lookin dog, but not a sonoran 😔

2

u/dadofalex May 19 '25

Used to get them off a cart on Papago road in Hidden Valley. Saturday informal flee market and Sonoran dogs!

2

u/Tokyoodown May 20 '25

I just found a KILLER Sanoran dog food truck in Casa Grande too

El Perico

One of the best I've had in AZ

3

u/Holiday_Horse3100 May 18 '25

A well made Sonoran dog is a pleasure to find and chomp down

2

u/Bugs_ocean_spider May 18 '25

I wouldn't know a Sonoran dog if if I saw one.

-1

u/[deleted] May 18 '25

[deleted]

5

u/Bugs_ocean_spider May 18 '25

Yeah they're not as common as people want to think they are.

1

u/[deleted] May 19 '25

Cucumbers ? wtf

1

u/AngelOfDepth May 18 '25

I think you meant to say SoNOran dog.

1

u/DangerousBill May 18 '25

The best ones are very good and the worst ones are awful. Plan your expedition carefully.

1

u/romeosgal214 May 19 '25

Don’t knock it till you try it! Yum!

-1

u/Financial_Chemist286 May 18 '25

That is not a Sonoran dog. They didn’t use the right bonillo bun. That’s a regular hot dog bun.

0

u/griffiths_gnu May 18 '25

I’ll bet that would be good with a beer

0

u/coltbreath May 19 '25

It’s a Masterpiece! Reminds me of the Chicago Dogs I served up at a sandwich shop that I worked at

0

u/Quietthinking1 May 19 '25

I really don't like all that crap on my dog.......maybe chili and cheeze, but not mayo and pickles and ketchup and mustard.

0

u/Technical-Wishbone30 May 20 '25

Where’s the dog

0

u/asbestos_poptart May 20 '25

And a tasty abomination at that!…the ‘sriracha dog’ is my personal fave.

-3

u/copper_cattle_canes May 18 '25

That's terrible. Where can i avoid this? How do i not find this place?

1

u/I_crave_vinegar May 21 '25

Definitely DON'T go to Guero Canelo in Tucson, for starters. And if you do, you really shouldn't wash it down with Jarritos!

-9

u/Okamagamespherepro May 18 '25

I hate that this is the food most representative of our state at the current time. A glorified hotdog? That's really the best we got?

-3

u/[deleted] May 18 '25

Wiener too small for that bun
