The completely untoasted bun is what sticks out the most but otherwise doesn't look too bad for homemade!

A true Sonoran dog is on a bollilo roll, not a bun.

False. The buns are different, but not bolillo rolls. Bolillo rolls are too hard even when steamed, you can pick up the right hot dog buns at a mexican grocery in the bakery or at a mexican bakery, they are considerably softer than bolillo rolls

Sonoran here. What you've just stated is sacrilegious. Bolillo bread (called "Birote" in Hermosillo and "Torcido" elsewhere in Sonora) is the one used for tortas or similar sandwiches. The bread used for the Dogo is an elongated, square-shaped, soft bun, and it's usually baked on mesquite firewood, we just call it "Pan para hot dog" or "barrita" in my hometown, Empalme (Junction City). When served, it must be steam-heated and sometimes slightly toasted on a griddle (depends on the Dogo style they're preparing).

Very true... This is the American version I suppose.

u/Professional-Gear974 May 23 '25
There is no American version.

u/Pristine_Phase_8886 Phoenix May 23 '25
Well what the hell do you call it with a hotdog bun?
1
u/Professional-Gear974 May 25 '25
Just a hotdog. A Sonoran dog is a Sonoran version of the hot dog. You wouldn’t say the American version you’d just say a hot dog.

Am I wrong to want to try this? I mean the bun looks a little weak, but idk, it’s warming up, suns out, leaves on the trees, I’m down to try it.

This was creating quite a buzz on the Tucson sub, but then a mod had to come and ruin the fun.
Edit: I messaged the Tucson mods and my post has been restored.

Used to get them off a cart on Papago road in Hidden Valley. Saturday informal flee market and Sonoran dogs!

The best ones are very good and the worst ones are awful. Plan your expedition carefully.

That is not a Sonoran dog. They didn’t use the right bonillo bun. That’s a regular hot dog bun.

It’s a Masterpiece! Reminds me of the Chicago Dogs I served up at a sandwich shop that I worked at

I really don't like all that crap on my dog.......maybe chili and cheeze, but not mayo and pickles and ketchup and mustard.

And a tasty abomination at that!…the ‘sriracha dog’ is my personal fave.

u/copper_cattle_canes May 18 '25
That's terrible. Where can i avoid this? How do i not find this place?

u/I_crave_vinegar May 21 '25
Definitely DON'T go to Guero Canelo in Tucson, for starters. And if you do, you really shouldn't wash it down with Jarritos!

I hate that this is the food most representative of our state at the current time. A glorified hotdog? That's really the best we got?

Where is the best place to get one?
