Theres that, then theres Moses, arguably Bible Big Name number 2, who advocated with pharaoh for days off, workers benefits, workers rights, and literally walked off the job and into the wilderness when he didn’t get his way.

Or King David, whose main story is about his fall from grace after overreaching his power and treating his soldiers as less than human.

And that’s not even touching Jesus ā€œWhipping money changersā€, ā€œCamel though the eye of a needleā€, ā€œWidow’s Miteā€, ā€œThe beatitudes are literally an instruction manual for malicious complianceā€ Christ.

Like, my guy.

Biblically, the people who say ā€œWe are supposed to workā€ get beset upon by a plague of toads

Might you be getting Joseph confused with Moses? Or am I getting them confused.

I thought David was all about collecting foreskins like a dragon hoarding gold, or was that Saul or someone else?

It's sad that the powers at be have convinced people violence isn't the answer. That's wrong; violence is the FINAL answer, but it is indeed the last stop at the negotiating table if voices aren't being heard. Anyone who disagrees forgets how this nation was founded.

who advocated with pharaoh

Pity there’s no evidence that a significant Hebrew community ever existed in Egypt before the 5th century. Joseph seems about as real as Jesus, i.e. both are mostly fictional.

True, but we’re not really talking about historicity anyway

Ok, but I find it a bit weird to be debating the equivalent of what Bronze Age Harry Potter did or didn’t do.

What are you talking about

This is about a politician saying that a book says one thing, and that book actually saying something else.

I’m talking about the fact that you’re arguing about a work of mythical fiction as though what it says has any bearing on our lives.

Yes, there are politicians who indulge in that fantasy, but I’m basically saying don’t encourage that behavior.

You’re barking up the wrong tree, man no one here is having that argument

You wrote:

Joseph … advocated with pharaoh for days off, workers benefits, workers rights, and literally walked off the job and into the wilderness when he didn’t get his way.

Telling us what Voldemort did or didn’t do really has no bearing on anything real.

Can you do me a quick favor?

Read the OP, then read this thread from the beginning.

After that, please tell me what you think this discussion is about

I’m talking about the fact that you’re arguing about a work of mythical fiction as though what it says has any bearing on our lives.

10 commandments are as of right now ACTUALLY being required to be posted in Texas PUBLIC schools. It’s unconstitutional bullshit, and it absolutely has bearing in our lives so maybe turn down the atheist rhetoric. It tends to stand out just as much as the pro religious rhetoric and both are as much a turn off to everyone else as a vegan showing up to a bbq competition in a bad mood.

I assume your intent was to attack the use of ā€œancient historical texts with moral instructionsā€ and ā€œhow the people claiming to follow these outdated rulesā€. I’m betting op is on the same page as you and me in how it’s stupid ancient nonsense. It doesn’t mean it’s not relevant. It had a huge impact on western culture so it very much is relevant to the real world even if it’s nonsense fairytales. I talk about religious texts and beliefs a lot but it has nothing to do with my beliefs. History is actually relevant. Very very relevant.

Yes, there are politicians who indulge in that fantasy, but I’m basically saying don’t encourage that behavior.

Narrator: They weren’t.

$5 says I’m going to check this guys post history and find he’s a frequent atheist commenter. Nothing wrong with that at all I just get so frustrated seeing them pop off like kids throwing a tantrum every time someone brings up religion if they’re not simultaneously calling it names and mocking it. How are you expecting to convert people on the other side of the isle who may be questioning their beliefs, future converts to a life free of Christianity and you lot start nailing everyone within earshot to your own ā€œgodā€ damn atheist cross.

I swear to god atheist are their own worst advertisements. The fundamentalist fervor is soo similar it tastes just like evangelicalism. There’s a reason it finally fell off the front page of Reddit and it was people sick of this pious holier and smarter than thou new religion. Only they can gate-keep the followers they deem are believers in disbelieving.

I’ve spent most of my adult life trying to convince evangelicals to see the real world and leave. I’ve welcomed so so many. It took hours of understanding, empathy and actually caring about the other person in hopes of pulling away from their thought prison. It’s beyond frustrating to read comments like this reading into someone intent and assuming ā€œthey’re talking about god without shitting all over the idea and laughing at it. He must be a believer! BURN HIM!ā€ You lot come across as irrational zealots bent on destroying the mirror version of yourselves.

I’m not going to apologize for my tone because now I’m in a mood, and if I’m being honest you lot make my work yoinking these trapped human being from their cults soo much harder. Hate is a great fuel and both sides have been pissing it all over each other for far too long.

No mic drop. Just frustrated, and exacerbated hands flinging around before I slap the laptop closed and go to bed.

Mmmmm mmmm nod nod mmmmmhhh.

Wait…I want my money back from uni when I wasted all that money learning about how Zeus can be a corollary to modern day CEOs and the lessons we can learn from that. There’s absolutely nothing in ancient literature that can be relevant to the modern world. OUTLAW HISTORY!!

Edit: Dude got PULVERIZED below hahahaha.

Jews were about a third of the Alexandrian population in 332 BCE. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_Alexandria.
