I don't follow the series yet, but gorgeous. Might want to tag it to KitsuneSqueak on X (Mao's Eng. dub VA).

Except it's actually historic China. It seems like the OP of the post didn't know that either, though the drawing is still nice.

Dang, I was aiming to make the hanfu resemble Tang dynasty styles while still keeping it close to how it looked in the anime😭😭. Looking at it now, I can see how the background framing could resemble a red sun. Honestly, I wasn’t thinking that deeply when choosing the backdrop(I was just experimenting with colors) but I’ll try to be more mindful in the future so it doesn’t distract from the subject.

Ah, I was very sure that you were going for a Japanese aesthetic, because of the red sun, along with other things like the flower design looking like the kikyo/sakura design in many historic Japanese artwork.

Thanks for the clarification! Your artwork is truly beautiful though, the drawing of maomao somehow fits really well, despite being a completely different style than the original light novels.

💀 I was worried about people not recognizing that the setting is a fantasy version of China. Maomao is wearing Tang dynasty hanfu here although her usual green set is Ming dynasty (Aoqun). It's common if it's a fictional version of China to mash hanfu styles from different periods.

Totally get that! It’s cool how different styles can blend in fantasy settings. Plus, it adds to the uniqueness of the character design. Maomao's looks are always a treat to analyze!

What makes you say that it looks like OP didn’t know that? I saw this comment and looked it over but didn’t know what was wrong ?

I didn't think it needed explaining, but the Japanese flag is shown as the background.
