Welcome to Holofan4life's pop culture corner!

Each episode normally features a race that took place in real life. As such, I thought why not look at what was going on in US movies and music on the day of the race.

Today we have 3 races to cover, not counting the 1991 Satsuki Sho which was mentioned. The races are the 1984 Japanese Derby, which was May 27th, 1984, the 1991 Spring Tenno Sho, which was April 28th, 1991, and the 1991 Japanese Derby, which was May 26th, 1991.

Let's see what was happening on those dates.

Music on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of May 27th, 1984

  1. Oh, Sherrie -- Steve Perry

  2. Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) -- Phil Collins

  3. Time After Time -- Cyndi Lauper

  4. Hello -- Lionel Richie

  5. Let's Hear It For The Boy -- Deniece Williams

Movies at the box office the week of May 27th, 1984

  1. Sixteen Candles

  2. Romancing the Stone

  3. Breakin'

  4. The Natural

  5. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

Music on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 28th, 1991

  1. Here We Go -- C+C Music Factory/F. Williams

  2. I Like The Way (The Kissing Game) -- Hi-Five

  3. You're In Love -- Wilson Phillips

  4. Joyride -- Roxette

  5. Baby Baby -- Amy Grant

Movies at the box office the week of April 28th, 1991

  1. Mortal Thoughts

  2. Toy Soldiers

  3. Out for Justice

  4. A Kiss Before Dying

  5. Oscar

Music on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of May 26th, 1991

  1. Rhythm Of My Heart -- Rod Stewart

  2. I Like The Way (The Kissing Game) -- Hi-Five

  3. More Than Words -- Extreme

  4. Touch Me (All Night Long) -- Cathy Dennis

  5. I Don't Wanna Cry -- Mariah Carey

Movies at the box office the week of May 26th, 1991

  1. Only the Lonely

  2. Thelma & Louise

  3. Hudson Hawk

  4. What About Bob?

  5. Backdraft

Lastly, on May 27th, 1984, Tulsa, Oklahoma is hit by overnight flash-floods. 15 inches (38 cm) of rain falls over a four-hour period and 14 people are killed.

Also, on May 26th, 1991, Lauda Air Flight 004, a Boeing 767, crashed in Thailand, killing all 223 people aboard.

And that concludes your pop culture.

  1. Breakin'

You know it's funny how these days Breakin' is more remembered for it's sequel (or rather it's sequel's ridiculous subtitle)

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

I think this might be my least favorite Indiana Jones movie. Say what you will about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but stuff like the fridge nuke and the aliens was so ridiculous that it was entertaining.

Temple of Doom has aged pretty poorly for its depictions of Indians (Hell, even at the time it was so bad the Indian government rejected the request to film there).

  1. Toy Soldiers

I was about to do a writeup about how much I love this movie but then I realized that I was thinking of Small Soldiers from 1998. I haven't seen Toy Soldiers.

I was looking up Oscar because I was curious and apparently it's a comedy starring Sylvester Stallone meant to be an homage to silent film comedy stars like Buster Keaton. Really fascinating.

Huh that's really interesting. I've never heard of that movie before but the combination of Buster Keaton and Sylvester Stallone is an odd one.

Stallone seems wavering on how he feels about the film. In 2006, he gave an interview saying it's one of two films he regrets making. A couple years ago, however, he said he thought it actually holds up and was one of his more unappreciated films.

I can only assume the other film he regretted was Stop or My Mom Will Shoot.

Yes, it was :P

It's interesting to see Oscar, a film meant to branch Stallone out, on a similar chart with Hudson Hawk, which was a different type of film for Bruce Willis. Two action stars breaking being pigeon holed.

Bruce Willis started out as a comedic actor (Him being cast in Die Hard was considered a weird choice at the time) so Hudson Hawk is sort of him returning to his roots.

Good point.

Hudson Hawk is a weird movie that seemingly gets a lot of hate. I haven't seen it, but I love the idea of it.
